Well lets see what Science brings to the table and what religion brings to the table. Science: Antibiotics Water Treatment Enhanced Farming Computers *Every technological advancement* Religion: Holy Wars
science is the child of religion fyi
I know that I'm going to be flamed for this, but what the hell is up with Facepunch and theism? The second someone talks about it is the second that a bunch of atheists come in, calling theists ignorant, stupid and shallow right wing nutjobs. When a theist comes in after that and presents his argument for theism, that theist most always gets flooded with insults and flames from atheists too! Is there something I'm missing here? Really, if theists are such ignorant people, then why are all these atheists being ignorant too?
How is insulting/flaming/whatever theists a demonstration of any ignorance? Pretty much every possible theist argument has been decisively refuted since the dawn of the internet, if they fail to read these and continue to tell us we're going to hell and that the world is so complex and evolution is fake then I think flaming them is completely justified. Though I personally try to point out logical fallacies on their part and attempt to point them toward critical thinking.
science is the child of religion fyi
No. They're separate thought processes.
I'm a Muslim.
Your right. Just like you can't proove that we aren't actually a planet riding on the back of a giant turtle orbiting the sun. But this turtle can not be found in any way, can not be seen, has no mass, and has been around forever. This turtle also is responsible for all the 'miracles' that happen every day and all things that happen in your life. No, we can't prove it doesn't exist and we can't prove it does. But it doesn't matter that we can't, what matters is how fucking retarded does that idea seem?
You missed the entire point. Some of these religions are indeed very rational and not illogical. Deism being one of them.
as long as you develop a strong and personal relationship with god (with no middle man such as the bible or a priest) go for it
Praise The Lord Almighty and all that is holy.
No. They're separate thought processes.
don't be a child now, use your brain I don't want to fucking explain it again
To be fair they're all equally ridiculous.
Well ridiculous doesn't really factor into it. All ridiculous is is your brain telling you not to believe in something because of because. It's just that they're all stories. They don't has anything to add to knowledge, just a bunch of answers to questions. And answers are okay I guess if you just want to be content, but answers won't save your dying wife from cancer.

If a person believed that, say, Richard Nixon created the Earth and everything, I'd flame the fuck out of them too. It makes just as much sense, and it's just as ridiculous.
You missed the entire point. Some of these religions are indeed very rational and not illogical. Deism being one of them.
Well deism doesn't have much to believe.
Praise The Lord Almighty and all that is holy.
I don't believe in god whatsoever but I've met a few christians who don't go to church or read the bible and explore themselves spiritually and they're all cool and progressive the fucknuts ones are the ones who believe in the bible and shit you can like god and not get pulled into the dogma of it all
don't be a child now, use your brain I don't want to fucking explain it again
I am using my brain. And if you were to use yours as well, you would realize that science and religion have both been developing alongside each other from the moment we achieved sentience. Science: That rock is hard, I can smash stuff with it Religion: The creator gave us these hard rocks so we can smash stuff with them
You missed the entire point. Some of these religions are indeed very rational and not illogical. Deism being one of them.
I wouldn't call deism rational, sure it's 0.00000001% of the absurdity of most other god claims but there's still a difference between that and rationality.
science is the child of religion fyi
Not really. One is trying to figure out stuff, the other is just knowing stuff. And knowing stuff is kind of cool, but it's not useful unless it's true stuff.
by the way. Also, following my belief in some kind of higher power, I personally believe: 1 - That if there is some magical mystery land beyond death, everyone's going there. 2 - Atheists and shit won't be left out simply because they don't believe in something. They were brought up the way they are and came to these conclusions logically and no one can fault them for that 3 - The christian idea of saving everyone is retarded. You're just as bad as atheists trying to save me from believing in something you ass.
I wouldn't call deism rational, sure it's 0.00000001% of the absurdity of most other god claims but there's still a difference between that and rationality.
Why is believing in nothing rational and believing in something not?
2 - Atheists and shit won't be left out simply because they don't believe in something. They were brought up the way they are and came to these conclusions logically and no one can fault them for that
Are you suggesting Atheism is forced in families? I mean, ALL families?
I know that I'm going to be flamed for this, but what the hell is up with Facepunch and theism? Really, if theists are such ignorant people, then why are all these atheists being ignorant too?
See, that's the beauty of theism. Everyone else is made apparently "ignorant" in your eyes, because you know your belief is the one true belief. Nobody can disprove belief to a theist. They have to go out and actively seek it for themselves... Theism has always been about the straight and narrow path. It's easy to be ignorant...
I am using my brain. Science: That rock is hard, I can smash stuff with it Religion: The creator gave us these hard rocks so we can smash stuff with them
Not really. See, science says that, but sometimes religions says "the rock is hard so we must bash goats with it to ward off bad omens" and stuff. Religion does a lot of pot I think.
wait a minute dude I fucking explained this to you in the last thread at least I remember the name zeke
If that's true you're going to have to explain it again so I can continue to ignore it on account of it being wrong. But seriously, humour me.
Are you suggesting Atheism is forced in families? I mean, ALL families?
Ideas from other people are automatically forced into your brain just by you being near them. That's how gullibility works.
Sounds more like nihilism than agnosticism. Not caring will destroy us.
People that don't care won't drag on stupid ideas like we all have for 7 or 8 pages and argue so fucking much. Not caring will liberate us. Not destroy us.
Not everyones idea of god is a magical man in the sky. If given long enough, you would probably develop your own belief of why you are on earth, or not care. This is what history has proven time and time again. Not everyone religion started out as a scam to make money. Some people really believed what they wanted to. If you go back to ancient cultures, they worshiped many non "being" things. The Sun, the Earth, the oceans.
I don't know what to say to that, mostly because i cant say anything because theres nothing to say there besides that you made a statement and did not really answer/defend anything. (I know i didn't ask any questions, but still)
yes [editline]10:45PM[/editline] god loves you
People that don't care won't drag on stupid ideas like we all have for 7 or 8 pages and argue so fucking much. Not caring will liberate us. Not destroy us.
Not caring halts progress. Believe it or not, debates like this are the definition of progress. (On a very small scale)
Why is believing in nothing rational and believing in something not?
Believing in nothing? Atheism is just lacking a belief in a god, usually stemming from the lack of empirical evidence. You can still believe in UFOs or whatever you like.
Believing in nothing? Atheism is just lacking a belief in a god, usually stemming from the lack of empirical evidence. You can still believe in UFOs or whatever you like.
Nice trying to be cute.
Why is believing in nothing rational and believing in something not?
Well because if you believe in something, you're saying something is true, if you believe in nothing, then you're pretty much just saying "I dunno". Problem is that when you say something is true and it's not then it's useless. All you're doing is getting your loafers caught in the tumble dryer of progress. Or something.
science is the child of religion fyi
My appologies I totally missed that page in the bible. "And thus the penicillin is a tool to defend syphillis" I think those were pages 1091-1092, chapter 28, act 1, scene 3
