The journalists were probably at the wrong place at the wrong time. If you listen to the radio chatter you can hear them talking about taking small arms fire from that area, and that is why the choppers were there in the first place. (I might be completely wrong but that is how I understood it based on the video)
Then one of the gunners/pilots or someone else spots the Journalists and their crew. Some of them were carrying long objects and peaking around corners. Then it is quite obvious that a soldier/gunner under stress and in a noisy environment will interpret the objects as weapons. (As a previous poster said, if you stick a long metal object out a window during a presidential speech. The security chief will probably send out a SWAT team when he first sees it before looking closer. Because he knows that if he makes the wrong decision the person they are trying to protect might get hurt or even killed. Which is probably what happened here.
As for how they acted during the shooting, I don't know how to respond to that. Maybe it is the mindset or maybe they are psyco killers. I have never been in a warzone and hopefully never have to. I don't know how it feels to behind the trigger of (a REAL) weapon, mowing people down. And I don't want to know.
It is easy to judge the video from the comfort of a chair. You can rewind the video, pause it or watch it several times. The soldiers can't, they have to act on their first impression. They will miss things. For example, when one of the journalists peaks around the corner with his camera the gunner instantly yells "RPG!" that is because it was his first impression. When you watch closely you can see that it is a camera, and that the person is taking pictures and looking at them.
Why didn't they send like police or soldiers down to check on them?

Weird thing is I only hear about the Americans doing retarded things in these wars. There are many other countries from the NATO alliance that are helping them there but I don't hear of any such kind of things happening from their part.

Sorry to say but each country does there own thing, you hear about Americans alot because how our country works, we have diffrent opinions on the subject so people talk and discuss unlike some countries were political leaders will supress information.
