Having seen this again from german's recent post thought I should actually post about it. Tried 5 or 6 maps IIRC, only deemed 3 worth bothering. Thirsk and Duala were left out because they've a reputation for being good and I can personally vouch for both of them anyway.
First up was Namalsk. About 1/3 the size of Chernarus. Only a few places I could see combat being worth it, but was pretty as hell. Not large enough for a roadtrip, not nearly. No go I suppose. Looks hella nice in the screenshots but tbh there wasn't much on the island, just a bunch of abandoned factories like that and a couple towns, compared to Chernarus where you're pretty much always eiter fighting in a town or in sight of a town.

Next was Panthera. Really cool map, seemed to be plenty of room for a roadtrip. The towns looked to make for some pretty cool combat, especially the sandy section's towns. Was less good looking than Namalsk but whatever, who knows maybe with some colour correction, bit of wet weather, and a nice time of day it would look better. The desert-like coastline area and even along the river looked pretty good for an amphibious assault :)

apparently in a world where four T-62s can fire their gun 3 times each, spray with 12.7 + 7.62 at a blob of 40 people sitting in the open, and kill 3 men in total. Consistently. It's like hitting each other with pillows, and the stereotype where it's more dangerous to be in a tank than it is an infantryman is present [I]everyywheerreeee[/I]. I've been playing for 3 hours and in the first 10 minutes I killed eight M48s. The next 2 hours and 50 minutes was me trying to mop up infantry and 3 tanks. There's about 100 infantryman sitting in a nearly flat open field with no grass taller than a man's boot, in front of my remaining few T-62s, 3 or 4 BMP-1s, and a few dozen men. They would take another couple hours to wipe from the map simply because they exist, not because they're being particularly crafty, are in a particularly good position, or have particularly good stats.
Wargame: Escalation in Europe come out faster.
