I was just in an Xbox Live party with a few of my friends who were playing CoD for a couple hours. Every five seconds they were raging about something.

just got back from my friends place, we played MW3 for quite a bit and I can't believe how much recycled content they used. I instantly recognized one of the specops missions from a campaign mission in WaW.

I thought everyone knew that this game was just the 4 most recent games thrown into a blender. You have to lower your expectations, and then you can have a fair amount of fun.

I don't think I should have to lower my standards for games when the overall standards of games seem to be increasing more and more (see: Skyrim, BF3, ArmA).

Also, the idea behind the WaW stuff is to take something from WaW and modernize it, just like how BF3 is bringing back Karkaand, a map from a 6 year old game. Tl;dr: Activision sees no reason to innovate when they can remake for profit. And this exact reason is why BF3 exists.
Well that's kind of like saying that's why Bad Company 2 exists, so they could remake Vietnam.
Well that's kind of like saying that's why Bad Company 2 exists, so they could remake Vietnam.
Not quite: you need to develop a more objective viewpoint first. Here, let's shift some paradigms together. First, we must name the purpose behind each of these games. Modern Warfare 3: Clearly an attempt to cash in on the series success. Why would you change from one of the number one selling series in history when you can play it safe and go with a sure thing. That's why Elite exists, and the market success of the game is proof they're onto something. They know their fanbase will buy the game, even if they're just trying to give it a shot and ultimately dislike it. MW3 is an arena shooter geared towards more casual gamers, these people don't want significant change. Major video games are very expensive to make now, so its hard to sell and develop a risk taking title. We can go throughout time and find that their are tons of games that were excellent, but didn't sell. Psychonauts is a super prime example of this. Battlefield 3: While quite different, the goal here is still to continue the series' ongoing success. The difference in innovation comes from the gameplay style and fanbase. The Battlefield series is a PC focused series, that is undebatable. PC gamers are always on the demand for bigger and better, and since its much less casual than console gamers, they want change and improvements. Also, since its much easier to pirate a PC game, far fewer mediocre, and cookie cutter games will achieve financial success. Because of the objective based gameplay that is the star attraction of Battlefield, such small changes as weapons and maps become far less important than new mechanics and ideas. Using your favorite gun and knowing the map does not guarantee success in game. Now we have to look at the big picture. These games are made by large companies, whose main goal is to achieve financial success. As we operate in what can be considered a free market, there are multiple ways to achieve success, and both companies are indeed successful. CoD is all about appeasing the very large fanbase they've developed with their Modern Warfare franchise. "If it ain't broke; don't fix it." may as well be their corporate philosophy. Because of this, their take on success is to incorporate a mix of new and old elements from their library of resources, so that they can sell us a new game as soon as possible. This is because they have guaranteed sales from their many die hard fans. Battlefield on the other hand has a smaller, pickier fanbase. These people are much more inclined to read reviews and talk to others before paying a cent, so their developers have to work much harder. If a repackaged Battlefield 2 was guaranteed to outsell MW3, you would not being playing BF3 right now. However, this is not the case, so new ideas became the lifeblood of DICE. Fortunately or unfortunately, the only way to tell Activision to change things is to not buy the game, but that certainly hasn't happened. Luckily, due to the large market that is videogames, both franchises have plenty of room to succeed. Lol vidya games.

notrabies yet irony is that DICE admitted that since 50% of development they developed primarily for consoles and even scaled down the 'innovation' ... PC innovation is stalled by consoles now and even great PC titles are infested with dumb-it-down effort
just tried swtor beta and its shit guys
True, but remember this game's point isn't to be innovative, they just wanted to make minor improvements to something that already existed and did fiscally well. They reused a campaign part from WaW not because its popular, but because the devs are lazy and they know their dumb fanbase will buy the game because its cod.
