Most bands typically change their setlist to reflect the type of music they've just released. Heritage isn't as deathy as their previous albums, so neither is the setlist.
I just got the new album with the DVD :DDDD I'm so psyched!!
So I invited a few friends round and we listened to the 5.1 mix of Heritage. Holy SHIIIIIT it was awesome. It sounds so much better on 5.1 There was a moment during the quiet solo at the end of Haxprocess where none of us moved, we simply sat and listened. Overall it's a great album
Just watched the making of the album on the dvd. Mikael is a comedic genius :v:
Can't wait to see them next month, one of my favorite bands

someone says i should see opeth at the warfield when they come by, should I?
I would say yes, but that's ultimately up to you. Chances are, with the release of Heritage, their setlist will mostly be songs from it. So if you enjoy Heritage, then I would say go for it. Hell, if you like any of Opeth's work, I would say it's worth a shot
Man I have no idea whether it's worth booking flights to Sydney ($200+) to go see them. Their new promoter in Australia refuses to send them to Adelaide. I am desperate to see them though. Here is what I have to say to their promoter:
Aha and when he zooms in on that refridgirator, it clearly says "Leslie" and then he goes "...lella" That was so hilarious.
My 60-year-old physics teacher may be going to see Opeth in Newcastle with my friends and I
They're coming to Newcastle? I live there, fuck yes
They're coming to Newcastle? I live there, fuck yes
Wrong Newcastle mate, when I lived in Newcastle (England) I had a friend who came from the Australian one, so confusing.
Heritage is superb.. much better than Damnation so far.
They were aiming for different styles
Damnit, my copy still hasn't arrived yet... Saw one in a store today though, the digipack looks nice.

I'm so digging this new album, 'Haxprocess' gave me 9 consecutive orgams. Planning on going to see them in December, should be pretty intense.
My summed up thoughts on the album are that the music itself is incredible (for example that solo at the end of Haxprocess had me by the balls) and the songwriting is generally very good, but the album as a whole seems to suffer a little bit from "prog checklist syndrome", in which a band trying to pay homage to '70s prog just ends up mimicking it as much as possible. The Ian Anderson-style flute-playing in Famine is one of the main symptoms of this. Furthermore, this will probably tick off a few of the more hardcore Opeth fans here, but I don't think Akerfeldt actually has that great a singing voice. A lot of the time on this album he relies on the technique of pitch-shifting (I don't know the proper name, but it's the little "aaaAAAhhuuuh" thing he does on the end of a lot of lines) to give his vocal performance a bit of flair, but it eventually starts to grate. The reason his clean vocals worked great on previous albums is because they were broken up by the death growls, but on here they do stagnate a bit. Other times his singing sounds very wet and sloppy, which is to say (on I Feel The Dark in particular), his singing sounds about a beat and a half behind where it should be. So then, the worst things about the album are Akerfeldt's singing and the underlying desire to pay tribute to as many '70s bands as possible. But other than that, Heritage is a divine album that has really paid off well for such a ballsy move by the band (hey, it even reached #22 in the UK album charts :v:)
The singing isn't bad, it's just not as thrilling as he has been before. Neither were the lyrics imo. That being said, it's well crafted and awesome. Not their best.
Neither were the lyrics imo.
"Feel the pain, in your brain, insane" I almost died when I heard that
Mikael's voice is kind of annoying to listen to if he's not changing it up with the growls. IMO.
Mikael's voice is kind of annoying to listen to if he's not changing it up with the growls. IMO.
Mikael has one of the best singing voices I have ever heard. I thought his growls were starting to sound a bit strained and dull on the last record.
Mikael has one of the best singing voices I have ever heard.
Well I wouldn't go that far, but I do think what made him great was growls. His "clean" singing voice is nice, he does it very well it's just that it doesn't compare to the powerhouse.
I think he has a very strong clean voice which carries really well. I can't stand death growls though.
Mikael has a very strong clean voice, I will agree with killer here. But I think the strength and power of his clean voice is accentuated when it's sandwiched in between the powerhouse growls (to use Ak'z word, which I like). The contrast emphasizes the best of both elements, really. I think if Mikael did a track the length of "Deliverance" or "Master's Apprentices" and did harsh vocals all the time through, it'd get pretty straining (as a listener) as you approach the end - that's a lot of growling. My favorite Opeth songs, and the ones I feel to be the strongest, are the songs with about a 60/40 mix either way (60 growl, or 40 growl).
The moments which have made me really fall in love with Opeth are generally clean but the balance was really key to their style, quite interesting they're leaving it really.
Just bought tickets for the sf show with Katatonia. Was down to booth seats so I had to throw down a little extra but eh it's fucking OPETH.

Though I enjoy nearly every type of musical passage they write. They really do have one of the best songwriters in the business.

Yay! Heritage showed up today. Call me strange if you like, but the first thing I did after opening the parcel was smell the "Making of" booklet...
