You haven't seen jack shit if Avatar felt spiritual to you.
Also, I don't understand why people think Avatar is showing an ecological message, for me the message is more "we're fucked up, we destroyed our planet and now we're all going to die because we're assholes". Not exactly the same thing ;)

How is that not in every way an ecological message?
Avatar is good if you like extreme cgi, which I don't. D9 had good balance of both cgi and real stuff.
D9 was entertaining interesting. Avatar was less entertaining.
How is that not in every way an ecological message?
Sure it is, but it's way more pessimistic than the "c'mon we can save the earth it's not too late" message...
Avatar was one of those things that make you think back to your child hood and Toy Soldier games on the ps1. Just the 'feeling' of it.
NOSTALGIA!
one thing they have in common - theyre both terrible movies!

No, it gives the message "c'mon we can save our planet by robbing another one"
I only saw D9 last night, far better than AVATAR. It didn't feel like it was 19 hours long and the characters actually had character.
The dialogue was good and whilst the CGI wasn't groundbreaking in the way AVATAR's was, it's necessary to point out D9 was made for one fifth of AVATAR's budget
district nine had way better character progression
And a better overhaul story, but well both are cool movies.
tbh they were both unoriginal piles of cash, i just liked d9 more
I walked into both of them knowing to expect good movies, and walked out having seen great movies. Its been a really good year for scifi; Terminator Salvation, District 9, Star Trek, Avatar (I'm sure there's more I just can't remember)
In fact, it's been a very very good year for film in general. Recessions breed escapism
I know each movie is different from each other, and it is hard to compare them both. But they are pretty much both the competing sci-fi alien movies.
Discuss here what you thought was better and why. I know most of you are going to pick D9 though :P.
Avatar surprised me, I thought it was going to be mediocre with great CGI.
District 9 surprised me even more, and turned out to be amazing considering the little attention it got before the movie.
Not sure if troll.

That's because it is mediocre with great CGI. That certainly surprised me as well.
Still waiting to see Avatar
I'm just so lazy :gonk:

I have not seen District 9 yet, but from what I've seen and heard it seems like a more plausible scenario than Avatar's. I just watched Avatar the other night. It was long, but to be honest it kinda needed to be for the story to be told in a way that made sense. Some of the character progression was a bit iffy, though. Such as the fact that [sp]when Tsu-tey gets killed, you don't feel too bad for him since he was a jerk for most of the movie.[/sp] To call the CG impressive would be an understatement. It was easily the best CG I've ever seen. The story was more original than I went in expecting, which is always a plus. What made it good for me is that I've been thinking about it since I saw it. Good movies do that to me.
Visually it's hands down Avatar. But in terms of story and what not, District 9 without a doubt.
You've gotta remember D9 cost 1/5th the price of AVATARD
Imagine what Blomkamp could do with 270,000,000 :allears:

I'm pretty sure the budget limitations are what made District 9 work. It was meant to be a documentary type movie that had limited perspective on everything that was happening.
If the movie had grand, epic CGI shots that costs millions to make, the effect of the movie wouldn't have been as great... if that makes any sense.
Ironically, the movies can be compared. They are both about [sp]humans becoming aliens and going up against their own race.[/sp]
But Blomkamp makes the story gritty instead of fantastical so he obviously must be way ahead of Cameron.
Making people choose between these two movies is a bad idea, Avatar is a visual masterpiece, Pandoras environment for example, was amazing. District 9 on the other hand showed a really good story and the first alien-related movie with an actual plausible flow of events (though i think we can all agree that realism has nothing to do with good movies).
There's nothing wrong with comparing good movies, but these two are good for so different reasons, it just wont work :3:

Yes.
Cameron writes like a 12 year old.
He can direct and I love his earlier stuff, but AVATAR was just dumb.
It's like meeting the world's most beautiful woman and finding out she has nothing interesting to say.
Avatar = live action smurfs.
District 9, simply because you didn't feel sorry for the humans because they were pure, unadulterated corporate assholes.
It was a lot harder to hate the humans in Avatar.

Seeing as how you just agreed with a sarcastic remark, there's really nothing left to discuss here.
"Cameron writes like a 12 year old" says it all. I've been wasting my time arguing with an immature wannabe film critic.

Feeling high and mighty now?
Avatar = Dances with Wolves/Last Samurai (and any other movie in witch a man meets people he presumes are godless savages who have yet to see the light but winds up liking them in the end) in Space and is not anywhere near the "Sci-fi masterpiece" as it was touted to be. now that's not to say it is a bad movie, sure the CG is wonderful and the battle sequences are awesome to watch but once you get passed that it's the same story we've heard a hundred times and it's bin done much better.
TL;DR: Avatar is nothing but a over-hyped, bloated, derivative, mediocre, passable Sci-fi Action Movie with good visuals but it fails on almost every other level.

Eat a dick.
District 9 was, imo, my film of the decade. It had the perfect amount of action, great CG, great actors, great story, great sense of scale, etcetera. It actually made me cry at one point.
