The recent-ish election cycle really radicalized a lot of people. People aren't willing to reasonably debate as much anymore. People would rather retreat into their ideological "safe spaces" and call the other side names and maybe even encourage violence against them. It also gave radical groups an opportunity to recruit disenfranchised easily impressionable people into their ranks.

Young left in US look up to Bernie and Obama, young right looks up to Trump (Ron Paul's movement hasn't been relevant since '12). Most of the SJW crowd will grow up and moderatize, and even currently are often critiqued by other leftist anyways in the extreme cases. Not saying it'll go away or that it won't cause it's own problems ofcourse. I'm not so sure for the alt-right especially when they control our government and then we see even seemingly nice people like Jon fear "white culture" becoming minority status.

In the Netherlands, a few weeks ago, it came out that Geert Wilders' party, the PVV, has relatively good support under Surinamers and Antilleans. The reason stated by a few of those supporters they interviewed, then, was that they feared that Dutch culture, and thus the Netherlands that they knew, is eroding due to the immigration of certain groups that legitimately refuse to integrate into Dutch culture, and said groups demands that the Dutch adapt to them instead of the other way around. It pisses way more (former) immigrants who actually integrated into Dutch society off than you would think. Especially when those groups which refuse to intergrate start shit all the time, and go on to blame the Dutch for it when said groups don't put a single lick of effort in themselves.

There are a lot of people self-identifying online as 'SJW' who are really quite sane even there, and moderate leftists get mislabelled as 'SJW' or extremists a lot just because of how right-wing mainstream US politics are. I don't think there are many people who mistakenly self-identify as 'alt-right' or, the GG issue aside where you have a group of actual extremists pushing the racism label to a largely moderate group, are false accused of being that.
