He's not just making the kind of superficial comments you'd expect from an average joe that doesn't usually talk race, like "why can't WE say the n word?" type stuff. If he reverted to that basic, clearly-hasn't-thought-about-it-much style of argument, then I'd be perfectly willing to accept this was just Jon getting backed into a corner.
