Just like a lot of other shit someone can say is based of a trend they've personally observed.[/quote] that's a fairly different statement than "nobody wants to be a [i]fucking[/i] construction worker. it propagates the idea that you're less socially valuable than those who go into professional careers. this, in turn, makes the belief that if you don't go to college and graduate with a degree and land a nice job with a fat paycheck, you're worthless and failed in life. i know a lot of people who went to college because they felt it was their only option and if they didn't they'd be failures, not because they really wanted to learn anything in particular but because they felt like they were socially obligated to go. now they're saddled with debt that they will never be able to get rid of, tons of unneeded stress, and anxiety about even being able to land a job because so many other people followed the same path without a clear goal that everybody has some sort of degree. employers have an overabundance of people they can hire with a college degree, so much so they can stamp a degree requirement on many jobs that used to only require a high school education because, fuck it, so many people have one you'll never be starved of applicants. now you've got a bunch of unemployed or underemployed college grads with debts that grow more crushing by the day because they couldn't land the job that would've allowed them to actually pay that debt off. in addition to this, the social discouragement to go into the trades has meant that the number of people actually working them is in decline. too many people have been socialized to believe that being a tradesman is beneath them for whatever reason that we're facing shortages because not enough young blood is coming in to take over when the older workers retire.
