The only reason we're not seeing some fucked up 5 leg alien is because: A: Humans are more dominant on earth, therefore it's a common thought bipeds as smart as us would become dominant. B: The eco system is designed like earth so obviously their going to be similar to humans. C: Too much work thinking up shitty creatures.
@spooks: "It's annoying how all "good" aliens have to look like humans." So, have you seen District 9 yet?

B: The eco system is designed like earth so obviously their going to be similar to humans. C: Too much work thinking up shitty creatures.
It doesn't have as much to do with being bipedal as it does with having hands and opposable thumbs. Most large animals on Earth have 4 limbs as the common ancestors of all large animals in the distant past had 4 limbs. If they were to have 6 limbs then the dominant species may have had four legs and two arms. Four arms and two legs. More unlikely, yet not impossible: three arms and three legs. Etc, etc. It's not like all life is going to develop along a four limbed path, in fact it's incredibly unlikely seeing as biological developments are the result of 'random' genetic changes over time. The main reason I reckon we don't see more original aliens in movies is because your average person isn't going to respond to them well because they don't realise that in reality aliens might be... well, completely 'alien' (excuse the term). They want things to retain a common feel to them that they're familiar with or they might find it unbelievable. Personally I'm not one of those people, but oh well. What can I do about it short of making my own movie?
No, but from what I've seen, they still look pretty human, 2 legs, 2 arms etc. [editline]04:07PM[/editline] @lonehunter
Even though I loved what I saw from IMAX I can't let this go away: http://img.denihilation.com/delgovatar.html Since the treatment was done 12 years ago, I wonder if the guys that made Delgo stole some ideas from it...
That was one big O-shit moment. A fuck load of similarities.
I can't wait for this film to come out, it's going to be amazing
Wow... Just wow... Delgo filmmakers are looking at suing Cameron because of the similarities....: http://www.slashfilm.com/2009/08/26/more-press-than-they-deserve-delgo-creators-consider-avatar-lawsuit/ And there are some pics from Empire Magazine showing the creatures of the movie: Close-up
Saw some clips of it on the T.V., looks like it's going to be pretty awesome.
Fuck cgi
Fuck cgi
Thanks for that riveting contribution.
Machinegun Mechas vs. Blue fuckers I have to see this shit
Seriously, if you don't think this is photo realistic then I don't know what is:
No, but from what I've seen, they still look pretty human, 2 legs, 2 arms etc. [editline]04:07PM[/editline] @lonehunter
The term would be "Humanoid."
It's annoying how all "good" aliens have to look like humans.
What disappoints me the most is not the lack of imagination in thinking up what an alien might look like, it's the lack of imagination in thinking up a decent fantasy story to tell. Most people are describing this movie as "Dances with Wolves in Space". That's pretty lame, if it turns out to be true. When doing a movie like Titanic, you are kind of limited in where the story can take you. You have a bunch of people on a boat, there's only so much you can do with that. I can see why Cameron did what he did there. If he's doing a fantasy on an alien planet though, there is no limit in where the story can take him. He can make up whatever crazy plot he wants. To see the same tired romantic plot again is kind of depressing.

After seeing the trailer it seems a bit of a let down. 60% cgi, and it's obvious CGI at that... [editline]02:06PM[/editline]
Seriously, if you don't think this is photo realistic then I don't know what is:
detailed but it still looks fake.
it looks fake.
Well no shit.
Jesus fucking christ holy shit this looks awesome. Fuck. Must see this. Seriously, that is some incredible CGI. Looks fucking real.

It's pretty hard to sell an original scifi story that is truly original. In fact, all movies recycle ideas that already are proven and have been rehearsed a million times before. It's all about the execution. I've read the treatment of Avatar and I'm liking the story, I mean, it's not 'revolutionary' (the only thing that is revolutionary about this movie is on the technical aspect behind the scene) but it does what it is supposed to do: deliver an epic story with lot of action. But I can assure you that if you show this to a toddler they will think it's real.
Okay, after watching some movies from 2008-2009 lately, I gotta say, even though, not photorealistic, Avatar's CGI looks 100x better than the CGI in most films.

Fukcing Delgo 2 No Good.
Seriously, if you don't think this is photo realistic then I don't know what is:
District 9 :v: But I do agree, there is some fantastic CGI in this film, I'm not too disappointed about the aliens, I mean I don't see too much wrong with them.
I'm fed up of two legs, two arms, two eyes, a relatively Earth-animal looking nose and mouth, etc, etc. I mean I'm sure any successful animal would probably develop such senses, but why must movies set it out in such a human manner?
Well water is the essential ingredient for life(in this universe anyway). So if we go to an earth-like planet that has water, I think it's safe to assume it will have earth-like creatures.

But in the Capital Wasteland, indeed in this entire country, water is polluted! Irradiated, deadly...
I got tickets to the limited IMAX 15 minute footage thing about a week ago. The stuff was bloody amazing. I've been reading up on how they shot and are currently editing the movie. It's apparently the first movie to ever actually be edited in 3D. And the process to create 3D is to shoot the same footage with 2 seperate cameras, at slight different angles from one another, to mimic how our eyes see. Cameron developed a camera that is essentially 2 lenses in one, making the process that much easier.
tickets on sale four months before the movie even comes out that's gotta be a first
Well water is the essential ingredient for life
No. Scientists just assume this when they're searching for planets with possible life to narrow down the search.
