Yeah, after watching the new trailer, which pretty much sums up the movie's plot it seems, makes me disappointed in what's to come. Granted, I'm meerly speculating here, but based on the evidence, plot seems VERY cliche: a man goes to conquer frontier, falls falls in love with the frontier, he fights to save it. The book "Heart of Darkness" had this core theme, somewhat, and there have been others. This plot has been done many times . . .
In fact, the last time it was done was this movie, I believe. Just replace the Indians with Na'vi, the horses with mechs, and the buffalo with dragons, and you get the picture:

I was really hoping Cameran was going to give us a completely new experience, instead, he's giving us something old and predictable and in 3D. Yippee. It still has a chance to be good, but I dunno, this movie might be pretty preachy.

I like Aliens, the Abyss, and True Lies, but I effing hated Titanic. Why? Because he made me sit through 2 hours and 45 minutes of absolute crap just to see a giant boat sink at the end (the coolest part).
If this movie is like Titanic where I have to sit through 2 hours of blue elf romance, it's gonna be a big waste of time, I don't care how epic the mechs vs. dragons will be.

Sadly, it probably will be. I expect a lot of social commentary thrown in as well, probably about the wars in the Middle East and political nutjobs. These kinds of movies are their stomping ground. The trailers show a lot of action, then when you see the real movie, the trailer actually showed ALL the action, and the rest is pointless dribble and romance trying to mask a political message.

I hate fucking Michael Bay, and I hated Transformers. I want a good story with action and twists and drama, jackass. Fucking Titanic was a snore fest till the end . . . I don't want this movie to end up the same.

From the trailer:
Seasoned but naive man wants to help the human race. He goes to an alien world. The alien world is strange an beautiful. He almost gets eaten by a large alien animal, but a hot alien chick saves him at the last moment. She suspects that he's a noob and something else about him. Even though he's human, he falls for the hot alien (who wouldn't).
He learns about alien's culture, lots of talking, lots of swimming with hot alien chick in weird alien pools. 45 minutes of talking and romance and learning, "Oh wow, these alien people are a lot like human people, but with dragons!"
He tries to convince the humans not to kill all the alien people for money. They don't listen.
He decides to help the alien people fight a war against the humans. Has sex with hot Alien Chick. War happens.
It looks dire for the alien people. Some important aliens die. But then . . .
plot twist
Hot alien chick is actually an Avatar too, and at the last minute betrays the humans IRL and causes massive damage, sending the humans packing.
Aliens live and we get the message "Don't invade foreign lands to kick off native people. Don't rape the land for money. Pay attention to your 10th grade history lessons that tell you all this stuff anyway, but without dragons and mechs."
Much like how, for me, Titanic's value was in how spectacular the ship sinking would be in terms of special effects, Avatar's value to me lies in how spectacular the 3d will be.
No movie has really used 3d in a way that makes the effect seem like THE effect to have, such as how Jurrasic Park really put CGI effects in the "Holy shit, I didn't know they could do that!" category.
Considering this is James Cameron, I'm willing to buy into the idea that if anyone can do it, he can.
Considering this is James Cameron, I feel sorry for anyone going into this for the characters or story. There is no way, after Titanic became the biggest moneymaker of all time, Cameron is going to think "You know what people want more of from me? Well written characters and story!"

This is the first good looking Sci-Fi movie I've heard about without the word Star in front of it for over 5-6 years, so I have a feeling it will be good.
This looks like trash.
James Cameron should crawl back into his hole and rethink the movie.
It doesn't look that special, sure nice fighting and all but I don't really see what all this hype is.
Then again it may be awesome, but it has to end with the humans bombing the shit out of the aliens then, if the aliens win with their spears and "powers of nature and love" I'm going to be pissed.
Just give us a good ending for once, I'm not 3 years old, I don't want to see the animals of the forest saving nature and defeating the evil human hunters.
Michael Bay films are for the people who don't actually go to the movies to pay attention. They just want to c a lot action. IMO i enjoy MB films. Who actually wants to pay attention to the frekin message when Optimus Prime is transforming from a truck to a giant killing robot? James Cameron sucks and i think Titanic sucked. WAAAAYYYY too much drama for a real movie
