They have everything to do with it because it is a much better film and got no where near the amount of praise this expensive cash cow load of horseshit film is getting.
Soviet Russia produced some amazing stuff. Amazing, insane, crazy as shit stuff.
And so why is it that when I say how the atmosphere had me immersed in Avatar, I was "wrong"?
If you'd like me to expound upon what I said, I would be perfectly willing to do so.
And so why is it that when I say how the atmosphere had me immersed in Avatar, I was "wrong"?
It is simply because of the fact that your opinion is wrong and far too mainstream for my liking. Sorry dear chap, it's only the truth!
It is simply because of the fact that your opinion is wrong and far too mainstream for my liking. Sorry dear chap, it's only the truth!
It's kind of hard to respond with what my opinion would be when I've already responded with something else.
I liked the movie simply for the reason that I liked the movie. I need not any scientifically tested reason to like it, I just like it. Why can't you be happy with that? Everyone has different tastes. The way I assess a movie and whether I choose to say I enjoyed it or not is completely different to yours, just like how we probably like different genres of music. I don't see why it's such a big deal that your opinion and taste just so happens to differ from someone else's.
Reposting because apparently nobody commenting in this thread is actually bothering to read any of it.
Just because you LIKE something does not make it GOOD.
You may LIKE the hamburgers at McDonald's, but that does not make them GOOD hamburgers.
What's up with the people trying to derail this thread?
Why can't you just say "this movie was horseshit", or whatever reason you have, and then leave?
Nonsense. What about those hounds that attack Jake? Even the lemurs could throw rocks or grenades or some shit.
And the Na'vi don't count, they weren't sent there by the forest.
Ok, your not counting the Na'vi.
And that's not nonsense. Again, think of conditions here on earth. I'm taking an example of lions and elephants. A jung elephant is a very good meal for a group of lions. Yet this group would never attack a herd of elephants. They wait until the jung elephant is separated, hurt or abandoned by his group.
You're now probably coming with the argument that Neytirii was on her own as well in that night, saving Jakes ass. Valid argument. But she knew the environment, knew how to act there to not be attacked. Jake made light and was noisy, so it was easy for the dogs to attack him.
What I'm saying is: Never attack an enemy you know that is stronger than you, except if that's your only remaining option.

Because I love to stay and keep repeating it to piss of people like you.
And also if that was the case this thread would just be a gigantic circle jerk about how great this movie was.
Because I love to say and keep repeating it to piss of people like you.

Then why not make a thread where you say how much you hate the movie?

This movie was great and I will see it again regardless of critics like you.
I agree with this comment.

I suppose I'll explain why I like it even though I'm some pretentious film art student/motion graphics designer/3D pretender at my core
Hollywood blockbusters are just what they say on the tin -Blockbusters. I don't watch Avatar to be amazed at its message or cinematography or set design or editing or focus on them in anywhere near the same way I would a film like Stalker or the Cabinet of Dr Caligari; Hollywood is all about the intense suspension of disbelief through continuity editing, characterisation, and now emerging technologies. It kept me drawn into a fantastically epic world with amazing visual effects and awesome 3D. It does what it's supposed to do very, very well, and I can see the genius in that just as much as I can the hip hop montages in a darren aronofsky film or the use of reflections in a film like 2001 or M
If you can't enjoy Hollywood cinema then you're reading too far into it. It's entertainment. It's not challenging mentally or asking any bigger questions, it's just a bloody good film
Also kudos for keeping me drawn in for a longer film, I can't stand watching any of the LOTR films just because they're so damn long
To devalue Hollywood is to push away chocolate flavour ice-cream

Well that would be just as bullshit as saying "this movie was teh awsum" and then leaving.
Then why not make a thread where you say how much you hate the movie?
Yeah because there need to be two separate thread of the same movie right? :downs:

Dark Knight is a perfect example of why that's not entirely true, and whatever Cameron directed before, this isn't better.
Well that would be just as bullshit as saying "this movie was teh awsum" and then leaving.
How about instead of saying "This sucks" or "This rocks" just talk about what you liked about the movie?

Uh, what are you talking about? This is the forest. It was mind controlling a bunch of animals into doing it's will. And from what I understand war dogs have been effective combat tools in the past, so why not alien war dogs?
And even, then this isn't a question of military strategy. This is a question of narrative. When the forest is bringing down it's wrath, it shouldn't just be like "eh, send in those panther thingies and the pterodactyls. Maybe the walking hammerheads, yeah that should be enough.
It should be all "FEEL THE WRATH OF THE EARTH MOTHERFUCKER". Everything and it's mother should be trying to kill the marines.

Agreed completely.
Virtually every one of Cameron's previous films was better than "Avatar" and each of them are examples of "Hollywood Cinema."
It's like the Avatar fanboys don't even think before they start mouthing off.

He's not losing the money per se if he's enjoying the movie and forking the cash over willingly, and I doubt he cares so much about your opinion that he's doing it to spite you.
I might jump on the :bandwagon: and see this movie. Looks pretty good. I hope its not just special effects though.

There's a difference between a movie that eats time and a movie that's good. Starship Troopers was a very entertaining movie, however, it was also a really stupid movie.
And I don't think you're giving this movie enough credit. It's obvious Cameron didn't mean for this to be popcorn entertainment. If this was popcorn entertainment it wouldn't be this ham fisted message about the evils of corporation and saving the environment.
I live in fucking Hollywood. Hollywood isn't chocolate, it's dog shit that claims to be chocolate.
They couldn't use missiles because of that field that was messing up instruments. It was impossible to get a "lock" with missiles to focus them on one area. Exactly. If they can hit a moving target mid-air, then why can't they use saturation fire on a TREE? But it was probably more for shock-and-awe to drop a big-ass bomb on it.
okay and this took a total of 10 minutes or so and it is still very brief.
I think retaliate is the wrong word, defending would be better. I guess right now you're talking about the Na'vi, the panther-like predator and the hammerhead. I think that's because they are the only creatures that are a real threat to the machines of the humans. We've seen that the arrows do jackshit against the windows of the helicopters/mechs, so it wouldn't make sense to bring them into danger.
Besides, I actually counted four creatures: The Na'vi, the panther, the hammerhead and the banshee.
Don't forget those freaky little hyena-things. And yeah, unless all of the marines had epilepsy I don't think the whirligig rave geckos are going to be much of a threat.
Uh, what are you talking about? This is the forest. It was mind controlling a bunch of animals into doing it's will. And from what I understand war dogs have been effective combat tools in the past, so why not alien war dogs?
Again, there's no mind-control involved, it's influence, not control.

Because then it would be Return of the Jedi with cute woodland fuzzies beating the big bad corporate whores with cutesy antics and grenades they don't understand how to operate.
It should be all "FEEL THE WRATH OF THE EARTH MOTHERFUCKER". Everything and it's mother should be trying to kill the marines.
And then the Soul Tree lets out a war-cry and says "We march to WAR!" and all the trees uproot themselves and smash the Orcs and everyone lives happily ever after.

You people seem to think that if your opinion is that the movie sucked, people should not go see it (or like it) because it was a waste of your time. However other people did enjoy the movie, they enjoyed the highlights of the movie while you can only pick at the flaws.

Oh, yeah, I mean the forest just makes the animals do everything it wants them to. But no, that's not mind control(even though the forest is a literal mind and it is literally controlling animals), that's influence.
I don't know, shit, he has a team of biologists. Maybe ants should have swarmed over them and picked them to death or something.
Well that's kind of what it was with the big blue elves and shit. It's just that Cameron isn't as incompetent at making action scenes as George Lucas.

I'm not saying it didn't entertain me for a couple of hours, I'm saying it was still pretty shit. Do you get the difference?

Where are you getting this from?
Half of the movies I like are bad, but I admit that they are bad and have no problem with it.
Saying "This is a bad movie but I enjoyed it." is very, very different from saying "I enjoyed this movie so that means it is good."

There's a difference between me saying "Hey, that guy's going to kick your ass and burn down your home, maybe you should do something about it" and "DESTROY THIS PEST MY MIRACULOUS AUTOMATON!" and then you performing exactly every action I tell you to like you're some kind of puppet. Apparantley you didn't bother reading the essay that I posted a couple of pages back because I gave an idea of how that shit works. But then if you're half as smart as you like to think you are you might have figured out half of it by yourself. I have a room-mate who can barely make a quesadilla, and HE figured it out, so why not you?
I'm not saying it didn't entertain me for a couple of hours, I'm saying it was still pretty shit. Do you get the difference?
They way you talk about it the only redeeming feature according to you is eye-candy, so yeah, you pretty much did say it didn't entertain you at all.
I'm not saying it didn't entertain me for a couple of hours, I'm saying it was still pretty shit. Do you get the difference?
If it really entertained you why would you say you were losing money if the whole purpose of the movie was to entertain? Is that not contradictory? Your opinion is that it was shit overall, my opinion is that it was good overall, good enough for a second viewing, good enough to think about after finished watching.

But the forest controlled who they attacked, where they went, what they did, how is this not mind control?
The eye candy entertained me.
