It was well made, the plot was shit.
I don't see how not liking an average film is considered non-conformist
Films worth the wait :
Up!
Aliens
The Godfather Part 2
and so on.

What? Alright, I've already stated all the possible faults this movie has. I'm sick of that bullshit. But when it comes to mothafuckin' movies, I've got a list so big it goes straight through the ground and into china.
Sci-fi:
The Thing
Alien
Blade Runner
Star Wars... 5. Return of the Jedi sucked.
2001
Solaris(the Tarkovsky 2001)
And recently,
District 9
and Star Trek
And that's just the big sci-fi stuff. If you wanted to include all movies then we could be here all day. Point is, Avatar is hardly one of the only movies to be released that were worth waiting for.
I think the movie was pretty neat. Lots of nice visuals and shit.
tl;dr version: i came

If I want some visuals, I watch Blade Runner. Hell, even Tron at least has a unique look(thanks to the brilliant artistic design of Moebius.

You're really not letting people get away with enjoying this film huh?
Why are people nitpicking on the plot or fine details in the movie?
Yeah, the plot was fairly simple but that wasn't the point of the movie, the point of it was to be immersive. And it did a damn good job, he created an entire world that was easy to get into and easy to relate to, yet it was vastly different. And while you're immersed the plot didn't detract from the experience at all, it was good enough to convey the experience without being too complicated to understand. The characters were also basic but they weren't two dimensional, there wasn't much detail but you got who they are without much time spent on them.
I guess people don't like it because he managed to make a movie without a large amount of detail going towards the plot and characters, yet still pulled both of those off well.

Nah, I'm sick of talking about all the possible ways in which it's flawed. And besides, even when I stopped posting people were telling me to not post, so what the fuck. It's not like my absence makes any difference. :v:

I thought the plot was greatly executed though it wasn't original theme-wise. But if you're going to reuse the basic structure and theme of a plot, you should use one from a great story (or in this case multiple movies), and not fuck everything up. I think the people behind the movie accomplished both.

Look, I'm not even saying that's bad. I mean, I can like a movie for visuals too. Tron was a cool movie in my opinion, and that's solely because of Moebius's artwork. I mean the writing, the 3D, the plot it was all complete shit, but Moebius is fucking awesome so fuck it.
But what I'm saying is, even on the standard of a visual movie it's not that great. There are much better visual movies. I mean, yeah, quality wise it's fucking amazing. But creatively? No. It's not that great creatively. I mean you have your dogs, your panthers, your birds, your trees, your flowers, it's practically a reskin of Earth overall. I mean, everything's bigger, sure, but the trees are still trees. The mushrooms are still mushrooms. Really, I've seen this shit before, in real life, and in other movies like Nausicaa(likely, seeing as i hear Cameron is an anime buff).
If I pay you for sex my argument will be valid.
Right, if we were fucking talking about sex. But we're talking about a goddamn movie so your argument is still not valid
Don't get all :smug: with me
If I pay you for sex my argument will be valid.
Depends on how much you are willing to pay, I would doubt anyone would turn down, say, a million dollars for sex.

What did you expect to see?
By Majache's logic any planet in any sci-fi film that has trees and animals is a "reskin of Earth".
This was a sci-fi in the way Star Wars was a sci-fi, i.e. barely.

Alright, cut that shit please. It's not "similar theme wise". It's the same movie. It's so the same movie that the aliens are turned into the the Indians. So let's not even try to make it past that- it is dances with wolves. Dances with wolves with lots of CG.
And I don't get this shit, since when do stories follow the "if it ain't broke" rule? That's total bullshit. There are plenty of good stories that haven't been told before, you don't need to reiterate the same thing over and over again.

Certain people in the thread aren't here to prove anything to do with the topic, they're just trying to make like being highly critical and argumentative makes them look good.
So don't even bother replying to them.

Star Wars was a sci-fi samurai film. And 5 was pretty damn good.
I mean, 4 was okay and 6 sucked. And the prequels were fucking unholy spawns of hell. But 5 was damn fine.
I'm just saying it looked nice but the story was not on par with what James Cameron usually outputs.
Anyone who disagrees is lying :colbert:
I saw the movie on Friday with some friends after our last day of Driver Education (yay insurance discount!). It was amazing. The 3D one was sold out, though. Over winter break I'm probably going to go see it in an IMAX with the rest of my family.

The fuck are you talking about. What isn't sci-fi about space stations the size of moons with giant fucking lasers on them?
SO you're telling me you watched this movie and then instead of thinking "holy goddamn shit that's amazing" you thought "ughhh that's not possible god this sucks it's unoriginal"
I bet you thought 9 was an awesome movie

You know you're at rock bottom when your only response is to stick your fingers in your ears because the opposing view is so distressing.

Too much fiction, not enough science.
Blade Runner, that's where the sci-fi balance is at it's finest.

I didn't care that it wasn't possible, it was just blatantly unoriginal and overlong.

No, I thought it was enjoyable. I mean, not for any of the reasons that Cameron intended, but I could enjoy it on a purely visual level. I just don't think it justifies all this praise, because there are a lot of much better visual movies.

I do read books, pardon me when I say Star Wars is sci-fi. It doesn't mean I've never heard of Ender's Game or Starship Troopers or other genre classics.
Ugh... can we stop the useless arguing and go back to talking about how pretty the graphics look and how many tanks the corporation should send to demolish the fuck out of smurfs?
