"Holy shit, I think we kind of kill the blue aliens and they were god or something", or "man, I'm sure sad the aliens are dead".
Plenty of movies have fantastical environments and create great characters in one movie. Like, Blade Runner
People are gonna slap me for this, but I have yet to see this movie. DON'T PANIC, I shall remedy this soon enough.
Alien
Haven't seen Alien in years, how many characters and new environments were there again?
Star Wars(the first movie, while part of a trilogy, was almost completely self contained plot and character wise)
I don't even remember the last time I've seen this movie, either. Usually I just have to watch a movie 2 or three times and then alot of it sticks with me for a long while, but it must have been quite some time since TBS spammed this movie.
And besides, Cameron wants to make Avatar a trilogy anyway.
Not sure if want...
I dunno. Maybe, "revenge of the evil humans" or something.
That's exactly why I wish they wouldn't make a sequel. There's only two paths they can take: Humans return to "take what is theirs", or Na'vi peace becomes unstable and Jake has to pull everyone's heads out of their asses. If Cameron managed to throw something completely off-the-wall and unpredictable, then hot-damn. Otherwise, meh. Don't get me wrong, I'd LOVE to see more of Pandora, but... What else is there that they can do?
I might go see this since you guys seem to love it. Just gotta find out if you can watch it in 3D over in the local cinema.
I might go see this since you guys seem to love it. Just gotta find out if you can watch it in 3D over in the local cinema.
Even in 2D the visuals are amazing, so either way you won't be disappointed.

The Nostromo, the Alien ship, the Alien planet, and all the areas those places comprise. How the fuck can you even be arguing with me about sci fi movies if you can't even remember one of these fucking pivotal sci fi movies.

I must've been 13 last time I saw Alien (12 years ago). I've seen plenty of other movies though, though we didn't own many VHS/DVDs of the sci-fi genre because my parents were more into Westerns so what little sci-fi I got was what they'd show on TV and we didn't even get "cable" until I was 16. :downs:
Because I saw them ages ago? I must've been 13 last time I saw Alien (12 years ago).
So? If you can't even remember the movie itself then watch it again, because you've clearly forgotten what good story telling and art design is.
So? If you can't even remember the movie itself then watch it again, because you've clearly forgotten what good story telling and art design is.
Because the movies you posted are clearly the only movies of any genre that exhibited either of those.
Because the movies you posted are clearly the only movies of any genre that exhibited either of those.
No, they're just some of the best.
No, they're just some of the best.
My point is that just because I haven't seen THOSE movies it doesn't mean I have no understanding of what it means for a movie to have a good story and good visuals.
My point is that just because I haven't seen THOSE movies it doesn't mean I have no understanding of what it means for a movie to have a good story and good visuals.
Really? Because you pretty much admitted that Avatar had crappy characters and a stupid plot. Yet you're still defending it like it's some great work of art when so many better things exist. And when I pull up examples of really actually, you know, creative art, you can't seem to remember them. Let me dodge your memory. If anything I've been trying to tell you how they're not as generic as you claim. The plot, yes, it's been done before, but that doesn't make it a shit plot. I just rewatched the movie (Thanks, torrents!). It was still awesome, but... :siren:
Grace the cigarette bitch, best scientist ever, and the Helicopter Pilot, who was a badass, the movie's best characters, both die. The only ones that don't die are Jake because he has plot armour and Neytiri because she has delicious sexy armour. Oh and norm, because he has unimportant armour. If there's a sequel, either Grace or Heli Pilot must somehow come back to life :saddowns:
(User was banned for this post ("Warez" - Hexxeh))
It feels like the only way to truly appreciate this movie is if you have a firm understanding of its backstory.
It feels like the only way to truly appreciate this movie is if you have a firm understanding of its backstory.
Well, you just need to know that Earth's a shithole and Colonel Coffee Cup is sad because he was a military genius and on the first day on Pandora he almost got killed. Oh and that Unubtainium is a room-temp supercondutor, then Wikipedia it and learn that Room-temp superconductors would be worth quadrillions.
It feels like the only way to truly appreciate this movie is if you have a firm understanding of its backstory.
C'mon! There's an alien planet. They got something people want, Scientists are racing with para-military forces to make a deal with the aliens before the para-military guys attack the aliens. A human with reasons to work for both sides is thrown in the middle of this conflict. That's the movie. Only if you want to know all the little details of the background material do you need any kind of extra information. Seriously, that unobtanium? You don't need to know jack shit about it, other than humans want it. Nothing going on in the movie requires you to know more about it.

I'll forgive you because you've never seen the film, but if that's all you think there is to the city in Blade Runner you're a fucking idiot. Are you really referring to the work of H. R. Giger as, "Just an orgy of rib cages" and "a doodle"? Wow. If that's all you can get out of some of the most brilliantly designed alien work of all time, then I just don't know what to say. That's like saying, "All those camera angles in Citizen Kane were stupid. I bet he was all just, 'put the camera wherever'". Seriously, are you fucking kidding me. H. R. Giger is one of the greatest conceptual designers of all time, and you call it a fucking doodle? Find me one person who even comes close to looking in any way like his work. Yeah, it's obvious you don't know what the fuck you're even talking about. And you know what's depressing? The original cut was going to be 3 hours long. And you know why they cut it? Because the 3D could only handle 2 hours and 26 minutes of footage. How do you like your 3D now?
Looks really awesome, i got a ticket to see it tomorrow in 3D

Hell, a scene taking place on the streets of, say, New York would've been incredible (to both look cool, and to contrast Earth to Pandora.)
Saw it yesterday. It was very good, but highly cliched. Well executed though, and the cliched parts are hilarious.
They should have showed a flashback of when Jake's brother was killed.
I don't think Jake really saw it. Judging by the way he said it, looks like his bro was mugged in the middle of some dark alley away from everyone else.
Oh you naive young fool. For someone who doesn't like to read you sure do like to "analyze".
But they don't say that, and they only sort of hint at that, and they don't fucking say that.
They probably don't need to say it because everyone probably already knows it but you. Sorry to leave you out of the loop like that, what with dropping hints like the desk-toy and an entire friggen mountain range floating above a massive magnetic vortex. Hopefully when they release the DVD they'll have "Put 2 and 2 together" subtitles so you won't feel so lost.
And you know what's depressing?
That you're still making superfluous nit-pick arguments?
The original cut was going to be 3 hours long. And you know why they cut it?
Ye, I know this, but it think it would have fit.
True. Plus, it could include a scene of Earth to show people how crappy it was at the time.
The general guy was a badass and his robot knife was fucking hilarious made the movie right there Wasn't the second coming of jesus like so many people praise it is. Still good.
