It's going the way of titanic. Gonna laugh if Cameron ends up being responsible for the top two grossing movies ever.
It takes James Cameron to surpass James Cameron
Saw this movie for the second time today (both times were in IMAX 3D), and I want to see it again.

Holiday Season
+ Huge Hype
-------------------
$$BIG BUCKS$$
People are off of school and work, sitting at home, bored and stuck with their relatives that they hate.
Avatar is LONG and has new eye candy. FOX has been promoting the fuck out of it on their TV network.
Of course it's raking in the dough.

This would not immediately strike me as a reason why it has done so well.
Good movie, more action than sci-fi I'd say. I could have guessed what was going to happen in the movie from just the trailers as well, but it was still very well done. Can't wait to see it in IMAX3D
0, this move sucks ass, it has a shity story that sounds like a bunch of sci-fi's boiled down into one, "the message" sounds like a 1970's peace rally, and the stereoptical version was really just putting blurry-as-fuck screens over anyone who wasn't considered important enough. The CG was nice, but apparently all 3D artists MUST make everything just a tad cartoonish for the dolts who can't tell the difference. I can't feel my fucking eyes from that shitty digital theatre I saw it at. I need to see an optometrist now, thank you James Cameron, for your wonderful fucking movie. I hope you die slowly in a fire.
That's your damn fault, go cry about it some more.
And what did you want the message to be, exactly?
Cant find the youtube vid with the handcam shots from deleted scenes(without musi, just the shots, no commentary)
Anyone?
I saw it the first time with 8 friends and afterwards the one sitting next to me asked me to look at his 3d glasses to see if they looked like mine and they were all fucked up and foggy and distorted, he watched the whole movie like that lol.

I don't know, I don't mind movies being long if its enjoyable.
And while you may not have found it enjoyable, I certainly did, and there are plenty of others who would agree.
No, I'm not saying that, I'm saying that I don't think a lot of people went because it was long.
And I DID actually enjoy most of it, I'm just horribly negative.
i liked it but it pretty much was dances with wolves with aliens

james cameron is god
Pff, he's richer than god.
Honestly, they did NOT need to spend so much money marketing this film.
The reason it keeps raking in cash is because of word of mouth, not because of the Avatar edition Big Macs. I guarantee it.

It's just Cameron waving his gold dick around.
Besides, I don't think he intended it for advertising the movie itself, but more likely to make people interested in Avatar itself (franchise, I think.)
Yeah, if things go as planned they're going to make at least 2 more movies, a series of video games and other shit, and who knows what else.
The marketing is to get people hyped enough to buy all the other Avatar-based shit.
They were probably worried it wouldn't do well enough considering it wasn't a sequel or an adaptation.
Course it ended up doing really well, matching sequel-adaptation twilight's gross in less than 2 weeks.
Even if the plot sucked and only the visuals were good, so what? The visuals are still part of the experience. You have to look at the whole not just the plot, besides it was entertaining.
I find this movie amazing not just because of the eye candy but also because of the amazing environment that was created. The amazing amount of history that was made for this movie. How everything that was put into this movie has so much detail of where it came from why its there what is the science behind why it works this certain way. Not all the information was put in this single movie for it would be far to long if it were.
I voted 8. The most fun I've had at the movies since I went to see The Dark Knight. I'm going to see it at the nearest IMAX theater (which isn't very near) next weekend so I'm looking forward to that.

Because it's a load of shit that people will go crazy for a few hours of oohing and ahhing and then think it's the best thing since sliced bread.

That's the goal of any movie that puts that much effort into environments/CGI/graphics. They succeeded.
Even if the plot sucked and only the visuals were good, so what? The visuals are still part of the experience. You have to look at the whole not just the plot, besides it was entertaining.
The visuals ARE the experience, that's the part that a lot of people don't seem to understand. It was a 3d visual experience, with a basic plot and characters to provide a frame for the visuals.
I saw it the first time with 8 friends and afterwards the one sitting next to me asked me to look at his 3d glasses to see if they looked like mine and they were all fucked up and foggy and distorted, he watched the whole movie like that lol.
Standing in line before the movie started, I looked through the glasses. Then during the ads before the previews, I used a napkin to wipe the glasses down, as I ate some snacks. By the time the previews started I was ready with some clear lenses. It's a habit I picked up from wearing sunglasses, it's finally come in useful for something else.

Maybe so. But a lot of people keep pinning the movies success on the over-budgeted marketing for it, and I just don't think that's true.
I could see advertisements for a movie everywhere, but they don't affect my decision to see it nearly as much as a friend telling me to see it.
8. 3D is still a gimmick. Overall good movie but predictable story.
I don't get why the plot sucked, I liked it and the visuals where amazing (watched it in 3d)
It takes James Cameron to surpass James Cameron
Yep it takes James Cameron to top James Cameron's other generic mediocrity that the public laps up like a hungry puppy to milk.
