The originality comes from how they become aliens. District 9 had an organic fluid, Avatar looks like it has some sort of science experiment.

while it looks very odd at first, if you watch it 2-3 more times it gets way better

Also, this looks sort of like "American Government Vs. Native Americans, only in the future!" Also, it looks like the Marines are rip-offs of the UNSC in Halo. They have the M6D pistol, I could've sworn I saw a Longbow, the logo is almost identical to the UNSC symbol, and they have Gunships that look extremely similar to the Hornet.

They'd be different from humans, no doubt, but all life that would evolve to a sentient level would look similar to us. Bipedal locomotion, tits(if they're mammalian), and similar muscle and bone structure being the foremost likely.

I was a little put off by the trailer but seeing how James Cameron made one of my favorite movies of all time (Aliens), I can learn to dig Avatar.
