Gonna watch it in 3D, next friday, for 1/3 of the price.

Avatar is awesome.
I'm hesitant to say that Avatar was the worst movie ever made, but it was easily the worst movie of the year. I saw Avatar when it was an hour and a half shorter, several hundred million dollars cheaper, and called Pocahontas.
Unobtanium? I'm sorry, but unob-fucking-tanium? Are you shitting me? Perhaps the name of the mineral they were trying to collect isn't a terribly important aspect of the story, but I feel that it accurately sums up the quality of Avatar as a whole. Unobtanium. Jesus Christ. Why not just call it Impossibletocollectium? This single aspect of the movie is representative of the quality of the whole. Avatar's paper-thin writing, complete lack of character development, and wholly predictable storyline made the viewing one of the longest three hours in my cinematic life.
Also- I fucking lost it when the stereotypical evil videogame commander, while piloting a mech, pulled out a six foot long "robot-sized" hunting knife and twirled it on the mech's fingertips. It was absolutely ridiculous.
Damn, harshin. Cameron's hamfisted political bent wouldn't have anything to do with that take, would it?
Anyway, it wasn't an intelligent or subtle movie by any means, but I thought the characters were likable enough to carry the plot, for the most part. But then, I kind of went in expecting it to be terrible so I was happy when it wasn't as bad as I thought.

Now that Avatar is up in 10 digits, Avatar is competing with Titanic now.
Cameron vs. Cameron...ironic?
Good film, brilliant in 3D, breath taking special effects but the acting was a bit pish. Oh yes and a lovely eco message.
worst movie of the year
Didn't Transformers 2 come out this year?
i loved avatar i saw it in imax 3d and i was like woah and everyone else was like woah
[editline]12:52PM[/editline]
I was like ok storyline and charaters but the way they told the story made it so awesome
[editline]12:53PM[/editline]
Animation was superior to anything i seen, Pixar has great animation but doesn't have a high quality feel of avatar due to pixar mostly making cartoonish animation
Also when a skinny blue dude who probably weighed a maximum of 300 lbs (140 kilos) was able to trade blows with a 2-ton mech suit.
Physics, people.
Pandora has low gravity. Therefore Earth physics don't apply. That would be why that mech dude even survived the drop to begin with.
At least pay attention to the story if you are going to take shots at it.
OK, what the hell. I hate watching movies that are dubbed in Spanish.
When I saw it, I heard the name unobtanium. Being in Spanish, it sounded like a name for any mineral, and there was no play on words, since "unobtainable" is "inobtenible". There still is some resemblance, but not enough to make the play on words work. I thought it was actually a good name.
Then I got on here and saw everyone bitching about it. I didn't notice why until I said it aloud in English. Cheesy as hell.
What really bugs the shit out of me is that James Cameron clearly now thinks he's the greatest film writer of all time.
If he wasn't such a smug, arrogant motherfucker I might not hate him and all his new work so much.

Low gravity does not significantly alter the interplay between objects of such dramatic mass differences.
Also, physics are constant no matter what planet you are on.

Dude, stop.
We know that for you the story is rubbish.
You don't need to repeat it on each of your posts on this thread.
You are borderline trolling now
Hehe, what I meant was that, here on Earth, that mech can do certain things. In a low gravity environment it makes sense that abilities would change.
Example: If you were to punch someone standing in front of you, that punch would have a certain amount of impact. Now if you were underwater and tried to punch that person in exactly the same way, that punch would have a totally different impact- even though the mass of the two objects(you and the other guy) haven't changed.
So, I'm saying the different environment on Pandora changes the capabilities of that Mech. On the other hand, the Navi have evolved on Pandora and so have full capabilities in that environment. This explains why they can stand up to the Mech more than a human ever could.

Read the original script, or atleast an overview of it. James Cameron had to shorten it and make it more "streamlined" calm down and be less of a desperate troll.
"We have an indigenous population of humanoids called the Na'vi .... they have bones reinforced with naturally occurring carbon fiber. They are very hard to kill."
it would have made more sence if they said "similar to carbon fiber"
Watch the Avatar B Roll(Youtube) there are many deleted scenes
I have seen this movie once, in 2D, and it was the best movie I've seen 2009.
I hope that I'll get a chance to see it in 3D. I have over 300km to the nearest 3D cinema :(

Carbon fiber is prized for being sturdy and lightweight.
A metal mech is extremely dense.
Carbon fiber bones would only make them more resilient, it would not give them additional density/mass.
I have to see it again because there where so many fucking people in the theater.
Aw we talking about the movie? I thought this thread would be about this:

How do you know the mech is made of like steel? It could be using some lightweight alloy made from unobtainium.
Also the mech never makes full contact with jake when it was trying to hit him.

No, it wouldn't. The only difference is that it's harder to punch fast because of the water resistance and you wouldn't fly as far (because of the water resistance).

Unobtanium wouldn't make sense for that kind of construction, since its primary use is as a super-conductor.
http://james-camerons-avatar.wikia.com/wiki/Unobtainium
I never said the mech was steel. We can make assumptions about the weight/mass of the mech in relation to the weight/mass of the Na'vi based on the way they move & interact with the environment. Based on these factors it becomes apparent that the Na'vi are relatively lightweight and low-density, and the mechs are relatively heavy and high-density.

It also wouldn't be a very good movie if the main characters got punched and splattered across the wall before the story really has time to unfold. I thought by now we'd realized the general consensus on movie physics was that, some things wouldn't work in real life, but if the director says it will, it damn sure will.
That said, saw the movie, loved it. It didn't really do anything original in terms of storyline, but it did it extremely well. I would like to see it in 3D, as well.
twas great
Guys just read the scriptment, explains everything pretty well

Even if it is heavy it's not like the fucking mech sits on jake lol. It tries to hit him with one of it's arms which weighs significantly less in respect to the rest of it's body. Most of the energy was transfered to the giant switchblade jake was holding anyway. You'd know this if you actually watched the movie instead of trying to find flaws.
Saw the film 2 days ago.
t'was awesome.

That doesn't mean it doesn't help if the director makes an effort to creatively solve the physics problems instead of simply ignoring them.
