As someone who plays more video games than anyone else I know, and who has over 1000 games on Steam/GOG, I will readily admit that video game culture can be really toxic.
and most of your hours are in tf2 so you're very biased in this situation
And when you call someone a nigger as an insult what exactly are you calling them other than a nigger? What other meaning could it possibly have
When you call someone an asshole, you're comparing them to an asshole, implying that they're unpleasant like one. When you call someone a nigger, you're implying that they're as good as a black person, which by your use of "nigger," implies that that isn't very good at all. You could, of course, be on the side that says "I don't even mean it as offensive, I just use it as a word," then whatever, I don't care to argue that. But otherwise you're implying a) they're a bad person because they're black (if they're black), or b) they're as bad as a black person, with the implication that that's bad (if they aren't black).
Treating them like person obviously, if they're cool with the word then thats fine.
And what if they're not cool with it, do you want to find out before or after saying nigger? Or you know, just not say it and avoid the gamble. Edit :
and most of your hours are in tf2 so you're very biased in this situation
On what world the games we play is relevant to saying or not saying nigger.
And what if they're not cool with it, do you want to find out before or after saying nigger? Or you know, just not say it and avoid the gamble.
Depends if they're friends with you. Don't say the n-word if they're strangers. All of this depends on the situation, like if I'm meeting with friends of friends then I would be more loose with my speech.
And what if they're not cool with it, do you want to find out before or after saying nigger? Or you know, just not say it and avoid the gamble.
Do you think people who are okay with saying it just spout it everywhere they go? The fuck do you take them for? I have asked many people within my communities if they are okay with the use of the word. If they aren't, then we all agree not to use it. If the room is full of people who are okay with it, then we use it. But immediately stop if someone enters who isn't. It's as simple as that. Not everything is so black and white. You can make exceptions and you can be accepting of those who are not okay with it.
you are just calling them a word. nothing more. when you are calling someone a fucker, you are not literally calling them someone who has sex. when you are calling someone an asshole, you are not literally calling them an anus. you are literally just calling them a word that sounds and feels insulting. because they are insults, not personal attacks on a person's being. i do believe that you shouldn't call a black person the n word out of respect for that person, as well as anyone else who wishes to not be called it. but when you're just playing a video game and wanna spout a word at some random person who killed you, it hurts nobody
The words have context, mate. They aren't within a vacuum. You aren't aiming them at someone, but you're putting that word out there. And IMO the biggest modifier here is your audience. If you're someone with a large audience (like you're streaming a game), saying "nigger" can have a multitude of effects, depending on who in the audience hears it. What if there's a person of color watching who's really uncomfortable with that word? If you're in a small group of friends, of whom your confident none of which are actually racist, then it's a bit of a different stories. Me and my coworkers, in private spaces, say racist jokes like "you know, I wish we could go back to a time where the blacks knew where they belonged," as a jab at our actually racist boss. You all know the potential of your statements because of where it's being said. And ultimately, just because you're comfortable with saying/hearing it doesn't mean everyone has to be. I'd be a bit annoyed if someone thought it was okay to casually go "wow, fucking faggot" or "that's gay" or "fuckin sissy" or similar.
Depends if they're friends with you. Don't say the n-word if they're strangers.
If you're friends with them and you're calling them nigger or nigga i'm gonna assume it's not to insult them, otherwise you're not gonna stay friends very long. So it's irrelevant to what we're talking about and doesn't answer if using nigger as an insult a good or a bad idea, and the one right we should defend today. Edit :
Do you think people who are okay with saying it just spout it everywhere they go? The fuck do you take them for? I have asked many people within my communities if they are okay with the use of the word. If they aren't, then we all agree not to use it. You can make exceptions and you can be accepting of those who are not okay with it.
Wouldn't it be just easier to not say it at all? And again in that context youre not trying to degrade someone by calling them nigger.

After thinking about it more I do think Pewds should uphold some restraint since he's literally the biggest Youtuber to ever exist. But yeah like I said above, I AM very courteous of the people around me and I always try to avoid hurting anyone's feelings. That's why I ask people if they are okay with it first.
Other people are the ones who come along later and try to attach greater and broader concepts and ideas to it that exist outside of that context. But the only thing that matters is the context at that moment, not what someone else wants to see in to it or reference. What you or someone else reads further in to it is entirely your own design.
Racial slurs are always gonna have a lot of baggage, no matter how casually they're said.
Why do racial slurs seem to have so much more baggage than sexist or homophobic slurs? Whore, slut, bitch, cunt, and faggot are not held to nearly as high of a pedestal as the n word is. But being a woman, or being gay, can be helped about as much as being a race can be.
Racial slurs are always gonna have a lot of baggage, no matter how casually they're said.
How do you tell someone there's a sale on crackers at the market.
But being a woman, or being gay, can be helped about as much as being a race can be.
I agree, and I don't know if anyone argued otherwise here.
How do you tell someone there's a sale on crackers at the market.
"salted wafers"
I agree, and I don't know if anyone argued otherwise here.
I'm not arguing. I'm just asking a question. :\

This many posts....oh boy. I dont think he meant anything by it.

Yo TB what the fuck.
From what I've seen from Sean Vanamans tweets it really seems like hes just sick of pewdiepie in general and wanted an excuse to lash out at him in anyway within his power. It just rubs me in the wrongest of ways.
I'm not arguing. I'm just asking a question. :\
Sorry for my word choice, bad translation on my part, but i'm kind of tired of the "you think racist slurs are bad so your think other degrading slurs are not as bad" because this is very tired deflection. No, they're all bad to me.

No, they're all bad to me.
I'd say it's pretty objective from a general public view that those words aren't held to the same standard, though. Had Felix said any of those other words I listed, the backlash wouldn't have been even a fraction as big. This thread probably wouldn't exist. But most of those words are used in the same exact way as the n word is, and have historical value to them as well. Yet, those words are only ever really taken super seriously when used towards the audience that those words were originally made to reference. If you call a woman a bitch, slut, whore, cunt; or a homosexual a faggot, then there'd be some repercussions because those words are being used in a situation where they should be taken seriously. I don't see why race gets the upper hand here.

[editline]10th September 2017[/editline] Like Felix shouldnt have said the thing but thats not an excuse to abuse laws to fuck with him because you didnt like the naughty word he said.
Yo TB what the fuck.
Man, TB just needs to get the fuck off Twitter. He just cannot deal with even the most minuscule amount of criticism. Makes me embarrassed for him.
i'd imagine people casually say nigger as an insult because it's probably the most offensive word in modern english. reactions like this make it that much stronger of a word. if you're saying it to an actual black guy it's a low hanging racist insult. when you're saying it to some guy on the internet you're probably not looking that much into it.
From what I've seen from Sean Vanamans tweets it really seems like hes just sick of pewdiepie in general and wanted an excuse to lash out at him in anyway within his power.
Idgi how does saying nigger feel good
Because it's like drinking alcohol when you're not the legal drinking age. You're told not to do it and how it's bad but when you do you wonder what the big deal was. It even feels good because it's forbidden. You can follow this to people doing different substances, sex acts, or even movies.
What I find genuinely fucking moronic about this is that Pewdiepie has reached a point of absurd scrutiny where the guy is not allowed to shout one word with a clear lack of intention to harm without a bunch of people calling him a horrible person perpetrating racism or a liability to the business. And I'm surprised Jim isn't taking his side and is seemingly blaming pewdiepie himself for the entire youtube system being fucked, assuming his whole "liability for the business" argument relates to youtube's very anal policies on ad revenue as of late.
Jim isn't taking his side because he's a giant piece of shit that's only in the game for fame and money. When he's not being talked about he's going to make himself the center of attention. Same goes to Total Biscuit who is also a massive cunt that doesn't deserve his viewership
Yo TB what the fuck.
That's super hypocritical from TB to start petty shit like this over a disagreement with French, when he always acts like the law and reason of youtube gaming.
I'd say it's pretty objective from a general public view that those words aren't held to the same standard, though. I can't prevent people from having double standards or control what they are particularely sensitive to.
Damn, Total Biscuit being a total bitch about being told he's wrong by someone more qualified than him. Then gonna just say "Yeah, he's just saying that because of a case he's working on." and try to disregard his legitimate points, and misrepresent the full nature of his case. Dishonest on so many levels.
