I wish I was famous so I can have people talk about me for calling people who use sexbots robosexuals.
Fracking toasters.
He's an entertainer, so his work is still somewhat dissociated from his personality, even if he decided to open up more and be far more honest. You can criticize him for his work and not find his jokes funny, something which this plenty of people on this forum have done for a very long time, but the core of the issue is that Pewdiepie frequently found himself at the center of very personal attacks from people who failed to do that basic dissociation between the man and his work - that's how we got WSJ claiming he was a nazi, from a joke about the holocaust.
They didn't. They said that he made racist and anti-semitic jokes, featured nazi imagery, and also said that he had received praise from the daily stormer. And they also included that he defends his actions as jokes that are in jest and that he doesn't support racial hatred.
Looks like Phillip DeFranco just weighed in:
you know, the whole "is nigger an okay word to say these days" hill is not really one i want to die on, so im not gonna pretend to defend his choice of that specific word. but i've heard plenty of very compelling arguments in this thread involving his lack of filter, different cultural norms and using the word in a very knee-jerk curse way. as someone who was an edgy little shitter teen years ago that adopted the casual use of nigger from 4chan for a time, i think i can sympathize with the dude getting himself in hot water when he blurts out a word that is in reality no big deal to him. it took one or two of those moments for me to realize the true weight that word carries. i just had the fortune to not be basically a celebrity, and my mistakes just served as learning experiences. it seems his mistakes are going to continue to cause wave after wave in journalism, and entrench him further and further into this weird nazi image some media outlets are building for him. and this is what i think really sucks. PDP is a big boy and doesn't/shouldn't need any help learning right from wrong, but i remember a time where offensive content like that in youtube content wasn't nearly a big deal aside from the occasional, usually polite commenter outlining why they didn't like that content. and you know what? i saw far more content creators change subtle details about their videos because of stuff like that more than i ever did yelling them into submission. being helpful and trying to share your experience works wonders compared to smear campaigns. my point is, and it does indeed tread dangerously close to a familiar (somewhat flawed) argument in a semi-related topic, all this media backlash and nazi labeling and co-creator shaming just has the chance to entrench PDP into using language similar to that and further alienating people who would otherwise enjoy his content. he's already kicked the hornets nest by uttering a single word to the point where an honest apology won't actually satisfy some people, why try and rein in that language when you could just fuck it and do what you want? the word "nigger" means nothing to PDP, it seems. unfortunately, it's a trend in a lot of people and as i've come to learn, a lot of cultures around the world. whether or not you want to destigmatize the word or further protect it as an awful racial slur, showing outright hostilities over it's use without scrutinizing context will not help at all. i do feel there is a valuable discussion on whether or not casual racial slurs like that are okay to use in "good faith humour," but it's unfortunately drowned out inbetween discussions that really shouldn't be relevant when you have content creators like iDubbz still churning out highly-viewed videos.

good response tbh
I like that he breaks out of character and actually says he fucked up. No half apologies, no "I'm sorry u got mad lol", and he aknowledges the influence he has.
Heres just a note. When I was growing up in PG county and the DC "suburbs" it is very common for "nigga" to be used the same way as dude and guy. You come around my area and you would see most young latinos, asians and pretty much everybody use it that way. Whites say it too but it really depends who their friends is and where they grow up. You guys can want nigga banned all you want but a large percent of people uses it without racial context from all backgrounds. NiggER on the other hand would get your ass beat here. Its like how paki is a racial slur but pakistani isnt. Minor word difference yet completely different context(although I have pakistani friends call themselves a paki the same way a dude would say he is a nigga). If you are in the states, just dont use nigger.
sadly won't matter to a majority of the angry people, as usual
An apology only goes as far as they can keep to what they say. If he does anything else like this after the fact, his apology means fuckall. So being scrutinous of the guy isn't uncalled for.
sadly won't matter to a majority of the angry people, as usual
Too bad for them. Firewatch devs shot themself in the foot and will only loose money from all of this. I really dont think they care and its up to them to decide if its worth the money lost. If he says he fucked up and that he should never have said it, he is on their side. It's up to them to recognise that, or refuse to admit their mistake like he did. Obviously this is only true if he actually changes.
That has to be the first time I've seen a youtuber make an apology vid that actually came of as sincere and concise.
Until some fuckwit decides to impede on your legally protected job because he thinks his views must hold extra weight so he starts abusing the DMCA system to bring you down.
I mean, to be fair, is this not just someone saying "I don't want to fund someone who uses racially-charged language so casually"? I wouldn't pay someone to play my video game if they called someone the N-word. Regardless, glad he apologised and recognised that what he said was bad, here's hoping next time he just says asshole or cunt.
I just see this as someone that said the most offensive word you can without thinking about it. I think people just like to be outraged.

Pewds apologized for it, people who didn't like it unsubbed, etc. That's really as far as it needs to go.
I mean when the word you don't like is a word as strong as that, I think it's more than just "nooo he isn't only using the words we approve of"
So publicly condemn him if that's what you want. What you shouldn't do is abuse the legal system for some self righteous agenda.
it must suck to grow in the light of everyone's eyes. You cant literally say anything without watching your back. While i would never think of such an offensive statement to say out of the blue, sometimes i do think to myself in that level of aggravating words, and being on Twitch or YouTube live must be somehow more like talking to yourself, and hearing that language over and over from others must make it less real to use the same kind of words. Well, it was a good response, there is no excuse in the end of it, only reasons, and he does know. I doubt hes a racist or anything like that, hes just immature and sometimes forgets what position he has. Hell, we all do at some points, good things theress no camera on me to capture that.
I mean when the word you don't like is a word as strong as that, I think it's more than just "nooo he isn't only using the words we approve of"
Lol dude its called free speech. Stop being so overly offended for other people. Its a word. It isnt going to hurt you. Walk away from your computer if you really cant handle it.

The regulation for wording is not to protect the state, is to protect people. If the people feel they want to trade some privacy for security, they will. Thats the millennial debate of the whole deal, and personally, it clearly is debatable if i could just outright provoke fear and treats without supervision.
I mean when the word you don't like is a word as strong as that, I think it's more than just "nooo he isn't only using the words we approve of"
Two wrongs dont make a right.
Words have history and meaning. People of all backgrounds are free to use words and people are free to respond to uses of words. Im half black so I can just say, its just a fucking word if it didnt had racial context.
Was it words that enslaved, torture, rape and murder africans 200 years ago or was it human beings?
Yeah I'm pretty sure slavers wrote contracts.
I still think context is important. It's never a great thing to say but it's not really that worth getting outright angry for in this situation.

Everything is meaninless without context. Every word gets its meaning by abstraction and representation. Its obvious that words arent anything more than that, thats not the point. Language is a tool, and what we mean with it and how we use it, either to insult, communicate or treat, is all under regulation and contextual developed meaning. The "broh is just a word" will never be more than a first dimension closet argument. Iam not black, but im dark skinned, and i personally take offence on anyone calling me a negro with liberty, and i get it, words arent the issue, its the people, education, etc, etc, but it is certainly the medium how they expand their ideas, and that is not arbitrary to look at.

I dont know why he used such the hard nigger instead of just nigga but he wasnt being racist in the slightest. I cant get upset about some white guy saying the n word in a nonracist way when I still go "wassup my nigga" every once in a while to my friend. If pewdiepie was in public yelling at some black dude a "stupid bitch nigger" in an argument then I would understand. But this is just poor word choice at most. People shouldnt abuse the legal system over this.
I really don't care about what pewdiepie said at this point, but saying "It's just words" is either completely ignorant or pretty dishonest.

I just think this case is no argument to think this cant be an issue in the extend of the conflicts that "wording" and language can have outside of this. And yeah, pewds is far from a racist, i support the guy, i take no offence on this case, by far, if anything i think the Firewatch guy is being a little arbitrary at his decision, and using the worst way to approach it, which is abuse a very faulty system that can damage more that pewdiepie. Hes just thinking superficially about the whole deal. [editline]12th September 2017[/editline] also
