I train Machado BJJ, American Combat Judo, Muay Thai, Boxing, and self-teaching myself a few TKD strikes that are applicable in MMA scenarios like spinning back kicks and side kicks. The gym I train at recently acquired a Greco Roman wrestling coach, so I guess you could say I'm learning that now too. [img_thumb]http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/180541_1830931382644_1521159110_1926531_5455239_n.jpg[/img_thumb] In the back/center, with the black/white shorts and the black long sleeve top. I've seriously never been in better shape. I was strong and everything during high school football, but I'm vastly superior cardio-wise nowadays. Also, I couldn't kick straight up past by waist before I started getting into MMA, now I can throw roundhouse kicks at above head level after 4 months or so of training.
I did muay thai, kickboxing and ai-ki-do for a while and tried MMA recently and I didn't like it at all People get concussions there daily but they try to tough it out with their 'tapout/affliction/im a pro UFC FIGHTER PRETTY MUCH BECAUSE I DO MMA' attitude, once I got a concussion there I just left for good. Not enough safety precautions and everyone acts like they're the shit because they do MMA, mostly the instructors.
If people got concussions training, then you weren't being trained correctly at all. You must have had incredibly terrible instructors. Nobody gets hurt at my gym. Sure, there's the occasional cut, bruise, jammed finger, or whatever, but nothing bad like concussions or broken bones. We wear all of the appropriate safety equipment and everything. Most of us don't wear headgear, but we're not trying to knock each other out when we spar. Find a reputable gym and try it out. It's seriously the most fun I've ever had doing anything, and I've played a shitton of sports and whatnot.

That's just ridiculous then. Find a smaller gym that has a smaller number of students and you'll probably find a better experience. The gym I go to is pretty incredible, it's in a small town but a lot of the guys commute quite a ways to go there, it's seriously one of the best gyms most guys have trained at.
I would love going back to Martial Arts. I did Judo for about a year when I was about 8, and tried a few lessons in Tae Kwon Do, but none of them really worked for me. Judo was great due to the falling techniques and the boost in balance. [editline]4th March 2011[/editline] I've been told that Muay Thai could work for me due to good basic strength in upper body, but I'm not sure about boxing.
[editline]4th March 2011[/editline] I've been told that Muay Thai could work for me due to good basic strength in upper body, but I'm not sure about boxing.
What ever are you talking about? At any rate, MT or Boxing is great. Unfortunately outside of thailand you will find that Muay Thai suffers from the competitive sport version of McDojos. I.E fighting gyms run by guys who really shouldn't be trainers in the first place and are stocked with fighters who think their technique is great, but really is terrible and shit. That's not to say there aren't a lot of really really good gyms, but just do your research is all. Boxing same thing again, find a good gym that has produced champions, be it amateur or professional, make sure that they have trainers who will give you plenty of hands on time, especially with pad-work. Be warned, MT and boxing aren't like most "martial arts" in that they aren't there to coddle you and blow smoke up your ass and tell you how badass you are when infact you will get rolled in a real confrontation. To get proficient at MT/boxing you need to train hard, and SPAR full contact, and you will take many many beatings on this long road to getting good. Give either a good go for 3 months, ask for sparring when you can, then after those 3 months decide if it's something you want to pursue competitively.
I got lucky and found a good gym on my first shot. The main instructor is a primarily BJJ/Judo guy, but he knows his Muay Thai as well. One of the other instructors is a IBA featherweight champion, so he knows his boxing. The third guy is actually in Brazil right now, since there's some problems with his visa. He's the main Muay Thai guy, he trains with Wanderlei Silva so his Muay Thai is pretty legit. Video of the guy that trains us most of the time. Despite specializing in BJJ and Judo, he knows his shit standing up. [editline]4th March 2011[/editline] And here's the guy that specializes in Muay Thai.
Looking on getting into Krav Maga.
I'm trying to get back into boxing, not only it gets me in good shape, but the my reflexes really improve. Plus I get to train with people who have gone to silver gloves and done pretty well (I think one time a guy got third).

I hope it was a joke or something, both of their hands were down half of the time (as a guy that does MMA so often you should know why this is one of the biggest beginner mistakes) even when I was just starting with martial arts, first rule: KEEP YOUR ARMS UP
In the first video, the guy that got knocked out was an armchair martial artist. He harassed my instructor for over a month before my instructor agreed to fight him. Which is why my instructor kept putting his hands down and whatnot, he was mocking the other guy. Did you see how the guy in the pants punched? No need to keep your hands up against that.

They should also be prepared for anything. See any pro even sparring and their hand are always up.
Yeah sorry I was thinking the exact same thing watching that video. He didn't look very proficient at all. Got any videos of your featherweight boxing champ, that would be interesting.
I train in Tai Chi Chuan Yang style and incorporate it into Krav Maga.

This isn't The Karate Kid kiddo, MMA isn't about honor and bullshit like that. Also, the guy went as far as going to my instructors house to harass him. He harassed my instructors wife as well. He needed to be made into an example of why you don't pretend to know shit after watching some youtube videos. Like I said, that guy is more of a BJJ/Judo specialist. He did a BJJ presentation for a Strikeforce event just last week or so, that's definitely where his strength is. As for the boxing instructor, he's a former champion so he's an older man now. I don't even think youtube was around when he fought, haha. There's one video of him lightly sparring a younger guy, but I don't think it does him much justice. He's the guy in white. I'd say he's in his 40's or so.

Martial arts is based upon the value of honour. Stupid statements like you said are the reason there is a new generation of idiots thinking that martial arts is all about being cool and no one gives a shit about honour or pride or nobility. Things like this make me wonder about the future of martial arts "MMA isn't about honor and bullshit like that". Any real reputable or respectable martial artist will tell you I am right. The whole practise of martial arts is about trying to be better than others, but also helping others better themselves.
Never said MMA is about being cool, but modern MMA is about competition, just like football and other sports. Sure, you develop discipline through martial arts, but when someone outright disrespects you and your family, you have every right to return the favor. Stick to watching your kung-fu movies.

Stick to watching your kung-fu movies.
Yes but football and other sports are also very honourable. Martial arts has the potential to cause way more harm to the opponent than most other sports so this is why the level of discipline has to be so high. If someone outright disrespects him, and tries to do something to them then he could have kicked his ass in self defence (if the guy was being physical). Stick to wearing tapout shirts and thinking you`re ultra tough because you don`t give a fuck and have circlejerks with your other tough MMA buddies.
Martial arts is very different for everyone. It's what you use it for that defines how it is for you. Some people use Martial arts to compete against each other in tournaments, some do it for health, personally I do it for self defense and heightening my sense of awareness. I've been taught honor in the dojo towards the people I am training with, but out on the streets there is no honor and there is no respect. It's the first to strike and disable his or her opponent by any means necessary. Martial arts is about you and your right to live.
I used to do Tae Kwon Do. I was looking at getting back into martial arts and was either thinking of going back to TKD, or trying out Capoeira or possibly Krav Maga. [editline]5th March 2011[/editline] I usually use martial arts as a way of keeping fit. I felt Tae Kwon Do was very athletic when training
Actually, the potential for injury is much higher in sports like football. Most of the injuries sustained in martial arts are superficial ones, simple cuts and bruises. Sure, you could tear someone's shoulder with a kimura, but not many people are enough of a heartless bastard to ignore a tap. I think it's stupid that since I'm not some super honorable kung-fu philosopher, I'm suddenly just some dude that thinks he's ultra tough and has circlejerks with other ultra tough dudes. I'm still a student of the sport and still have much to learn, but I'm realistic about it. This discussion makes me think you watched The Karate Kid and all of a sudden know what martial arts are about.
I thought Martial Arts was about nun-chuks and 720 jumping kicks.

Kids like you are the reason that so many people look down on MMA fighters. A buddy of mine, one of the best MMA fighters around hated it. He would never ever get into a fight unless he was provoked, he would treat everyone with respect and didn't even talk about how he fights or whatever. When people like you came around he would be extremely disappointed. People that think MMA has nothing to do with honour. and that humiliating your opponent is acceptable. But it's okay I guess, there are thousands and thousands more people like you who think MMA is just something cool.
Here's a video of me doing a sloppy run through of Tai Chi Chuan Yang style so I could show you guys what I do everyday anywhere between 6:00AM and 10:00AM. It's a soft form so it looks like a dance but it does wonders for your health, I do Krav Maga as a hard form and take each movement in Tai Chi Chuan Yang style and incorporate it into my Krav Maga. You're just taking a simple action like putting your hands down to mock an opponent and blowing it up into some improper martial artist bullshit and crap like that. So are you saying guys like Anderson Silva, one of the best if not the best P4P fighters in the world, are ruining the sport because he mocks his opponents? Is MMA just "something cool" to Anderson Silva and Josh Koscheck? You're just being ridiculous. MMA is an emotional sport, it would be ridiculously boring if everyone was super nice to each other and whatnot.

You don't see football players mocking each other.

I've seen a guy doing some cool Tiger style Kung Fu (I think). It looks pretty neat.

I can definitely see the skill in that guy, he's still got the angles and technical proficiency, that much is evident. Would like to see him spar at full speed. Also guys, Maverick is right. Martial Arts has literally fuck all to do with honor or any other idealistic values. Some of the greatest martial artists, world champions in their chosen field, have been the biggest cunts you could meet. Martial Arts literally means combat arts. The only reason MMA has a negative stigma at the moment is because it's still so new. If anything, I'd say MMA on average has more respectful pro fighters than other sports have had. I could name many champion boxers and kickboxers who while extremely talented martial artists, defined terms like dickhead, wanker and asshole. [editline]6th March 2011[/editline]
all that is just for show, when they are sparring and shit they could give less of a fuck about what some guy said or did, they play it out because dana white pays them big bucks to do it, and all the little tapout kids think that's what the sport is all about
How so. There have been plenty of grudge matches in MMA. Sure some fights they talk it up to generate interest, but guys have lost fights because they couldn't control their tempers in the cage. Thats like saying Dana White payed Paul Daley to get himself kicked out of the UFC. In fact, the best recent example to my mind would be Rivera - Bisping. That wasn't just talk. You dont go and spit on a guys corner team after the fight is over because you want to hype it even more. Bisping is genuinely a douchebag, and Rivera genuinely doesn't like the guy, and now Bisping genuinely hates Rivera.
1. The professional fighters have a right to be cocky about something-they are some of the best in the world. That attitude shouldn't be shared by people who have been doing it for a year. 2. how do you know all that is genuine? UFC is all show lol
