So I've been doing MMA and I've found that I've always been more comfortable and more successful in up close striking/throws. Anyone here have any tips for dominating the clinch?
Grab the balls.

And say "Who's your daddy now, bitch".
got robbed a few months ago and didn't fight back because i have no experience whatsoever in self-defense.
been looking for some sort of boxing gym in my area but the closest thing is a tkd academy by my school.
is there any way at all i can learn some sort of self-defense, or should i just not?
get huge carry a gat idk lol
Being built is always an awesome deterrent. Whenever I go into the bad part of town now I always see the "okay not this guy" expression on the alley monkeys. That being said, being big is more of a burden in an actual fight. There are specialized self defense classes you can take, most conventional martial arts (especially boxing, wrestling) have almost no translation into a street fight.
gotcha
time to start bulkin
Double arm locked my muay thai partner last night. Clinches by themself are exhausting. I've lost 10 pounds since I started back up in late January. This goes for all forms of excercise, you feel so good about yourself after it is amazing.
I think I'd like to try out some kinda of martial arts.
It seems like something I'd actually enjoy, and it'd give me something to keep my mind off college for a while.
I'd also like something I could use for self-defense if I had to.
Any suggestions other than Tae Kwon Do?
I'm a big fan of Boxing, muai thai, and BJJ.
I just wanna share this BULLSHIT with you guys:

If you see this shit when you are checking out places, run. It's been said time and time again, but until bullshit martial arts are a minority and not a majority, it's gotta be repeated.
Fuck how do you embed again fuck

What? why? That's adorable! I'm sure in a fight an attacker would quit right away. Seriously though, if that's black belt testing then someone got screwed. My gym doesn't do paid belt tests or test that way.
I am getting frustrated as fuck, I'm good striker but this one guy is a wrestler. I can't figure out how to prevent his takedowns or how to make sure the fight stays a striking game. Does anyone know of any strategies/drills/movements for helping a striker fend off a wrestler?

The obvious answer is to practice sprawling fast, and sprawling well.
Seems I can't do MMA because my university is on the way. I can only do Muay Thai on Saturdays and I don't feel I'm ready to start another art all over again.
Think after all this time and money invested in Krav Maga it's just dumb to just quit so I think I'm staying. Although there's a lack of equipment the coaches are not bad at all. I mean it's not the federation's fault.
I'm going to speak with the guys from the gym and see what they can do about it.

That's not usually a god motivation to start a martial art.
I see lots of guys coming to Krav Maga because they get robbed and shit and want to kick their asses and take names. Next thing I know they stop showing up after a month or two.
The thing is, the key factor for being good at a martial art or defense system is to be passionate about it and enjoy it.
So If you're going on a defense system I recommend, regardless of what people say it's the best and the ultimate kick ass experience, that you go visit dojos and gyms and see what martial art you like the best.
From my opinion it's not the martial art that is going to make you good at fighting. It's how good you are at it, and being happy in what you're training is a big boost toward that goal.

thank you for the information
I don't think I'll start up martial arts anyways, there are absolutely no dojos or academies in my city.

Hey thanks a ton, I looked up some sprawling strategies and techniques. Yesterday in sparring I managed to avoid getting put in a submission for a while with my wrestling friend. I'm feeling a lot more confident about this match.
The most powerful technique:

There is a technique of similar nature in one of my [karate] forms. I don't like any sort of groin attacks.
I look at them as like a catch 22; on one hand, they are risky to try and attempt, they usually just get people even more pissed at you, and it psychologically feels weird ripping at balls. On the other hand, if your attempt goes well, it's great. When they are effective, they are effective.

I took half a year of Eagle Claw and that move was in 100% of everything I was taught

Looks like the start of a technique of mine. It would start on the other side and you would be hooking the back of the heel for a take-down instead tearing their balls off.
Monkey steals "the peach".
So I'm contemplating on whether or not I'm gonna compete at NAGA Rhode Island next month. It's a long trip for me, as I'll be traveling from Southern New Hampshire. The distance is pretty much the only thing that is keeping me indecisive. If I can find someone to carpool (prolly can), I'm in. Whatever I can do to make the travel much less of a pain in the ass, great.
Any other New England grapplers here that are gonna be competing at NAGAs?
I'll be going in as a White Belt, but I technically have a few years of experience under my belt. Though, I'm not quite sandbagging, as my instruction and training over the years has been a bit inconsistent.
got kicked in the face today in muay thai
fuckin'
dudes, don't get kicked in the face
You got kicked in the face with doing muay thai and lived?
Fucking amazing

I've never heard so many apologies in my life
I have a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do
Have not done it in several years though
I practiced karate a lot a few years back, but then I stopped because my sensei didn't want to do classes anymore (money problems). The style of karate that I practiced was Ken Shin Kan. I was 3th Kyu, Green Belt.
PS: My Dad was the Sensei, 6th Dan Black Belt.
I moved to a new gym that is completely centered around MMA. They have two guys in UFC and I think the tour guy mentioned someone from bellator. And HOLY SHIT, all the knowledge. I learned more about grappling and striking in three hours there than I did half a year at my old gym.
