I love space, it's so mysterious and interesting. But I'd be terrified floating through it's emptiness, knowing no one has the power to help me if something goes wrong, helpless really. I'd still go in a second though.
because to be honest it's more like that one kid who's a real asshole in the back saying "YEAH WELL YOU WEREN'T THE FIRST, LOSER! HAHAHA" the point is that we were able to do it anyways without needing help from russia
Just pointing out something what most people do not know.
This is the speech Nixon prepared in case the Lunar Lander failed to take off and Armstrong and Aldrin were stranded on the Moon.
Fate has ordained that the men who went to the moon to explore in peace will stay on the moon to rest in peace. These brave men, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, know that there is no hope for their recovery. But they also know that there is hope for mankind in their sacrifice. These two men are laying down their lives in mankind's most noble goal: the search for truth and understanding. They will be mourned by their families and friends; they will be mourned by their nation; they will be mourned by the people of the world; they will be mourned by a Mother Earth that dared send two of her sons into the unknown. In their exploration, they stirred the people of the world to feel as one; in their sacrifice, they bind more tightly the brotherhood of man. In ancient days, men looked at stars and saw their heroes in the constellations. In modern times, we do much the same, but our heroes are epic men of flesh and blood. Others will follow, and surely find their way home. Man's search will not be denied. But these men were the first, and they will remain the foremost in our hearts. For every human being who looks up at the moon in the nights to come will know that there is some corner of another world that is forever mankind.
We should go back to the moon in order to colonize the moon, and set up a moonbase for spacecraft launches to Mars.
idk if this was posted, but it has all the times nasa went to the moon and links to nasa's journals of the astronauts http://www.google.com/moon/ it also has pictures for those who dont like to read

I swear, if they took these pictures again today, I doubt I'd be able to tell the difference. Amazing quality. Makes the stills themselves all the more fantastic.
I've watched that series of documentaries over and over again ever since I first saw them on the Discovery Channel a couple of years ago. They're definitely worth watching.
I just had a tiny orgasm.
Well of course it is awesome to know that USA did this, but remember that Russia send out the first space flight + send out the first human to space while the USA could not lift a rocket for 10 meters without exploding it :v: I wonder why this information is always left behind..
They hit nearly every milestone first, but their lander just wasn't ready. First artificial satellite - USSR First Man in orbit - USSR First space station - USSR First unmanned orbit of the moon -USSR First remote controlled vehicle on the moon - USSR First man on the moon - USA
We should sculpt the moon like it's a big piece of clay.
Seeing this upsets me greatly, seeing as I swear we've gone backwards. From that point on, for some reason, no-one seems all that interested in exploring the cosmos anymore..
URSS Failed
1906 (or so) First plane flew for 12 seconds. 1945 - End of WWII, Advanced planes for its time 42 years ago - first man walks on moon Now - More men can walk on moon.
Interesting read (User was banned for this post ("Why the hell would you quote the entire thing." - Pascall))
Was it necessary to quote the whole thing?

I can't even mock American patriotism anymore.
I'm loving how those pictures look like something you'd get off a modern camera.
I'm loving how those pictures look like something you'd get off a modern camera.
You think they would've skimped on the equipment for something like this?
If you think that was great just wait until we put bases on mars.
If you think that was great just wait until we put bases on mars.
Just wait until we discover the Prothean ruins.
:v:
What about it ?
Such a shame that the "When we left Earth" series is edited in a pro-america direction, when it SHOULD have been pro-humanity. Cold war is over for fucks sake, stop shoving that flag in my face every 5 seconds.
Originally Pizza Hut was going to laser their logo onto the moon.
Another bit of Sagan to make you think. [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/TMzbr.jpg[/thumb]

To think that while he was walking on the moon, some random dude was stabbing a little girl for please. Some thugs were killing a young lady for a 5 dollars bill, and probably millions of people like that were arguing and hating each other for stupid reasons. Man kind still got a looong way to go.
It still makes me wonder where we would be right now if we shoved massive funding into space exploration and NASA 42 years is a long time for progress but noooo we had to go to Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran...
why
"It's not about why, It's about why not!" Seriously though. Shackleton Crater. Fuel. Space Economy. Usher in era of space flight. Ain't making this up. It starts off about caves, but just watch the whole thing. http://www.ted.com/talks/bill_stone_explores_the_earth_and_space.html
