It's funny how americans think there was a fight between Russia and USA to get to the moon, not in open space, therefore USA won. :downs:
yes the history books like to make it seem like a huge race to land on the moon between the americans and the russians, but russian goverment already had decided putting a man (cosmonaut) on the moon would be too costly and even more dangerous, so they opted for the large Lunokhod 1 which was almost a remote controlled SUV. the real race was to see who would land on the moon and plant a flag first, we still won but the lunokhod program performed more experiments than the entire Apollo project did NASA should be given buttloads of funding to land on the moon and form a base up there, heck the titanium, platinum, and other rare element deposits there would be enough to pay for the entire base in like 3-5 years of mining
snake. snaaKE. SAkEI. If posting "AEIOU" and "John Madden" is considered relevant, then so is this. (Video in question)

Loving the ignorance in this thread.
The pics in OP make me wish NASA still took film cameras to space instead of digital.
Fuck Nasa, I can build rockets too... in Kerbal Space Program.
it wrenches my heart to watch this video.
It does? Watching that video made me smile. It made me happy. It filled me with optimism and joy. Because, in the end, regardless of how little progress we seem to making now... we are making some - slowly but definitely surely. And one day we WILL send people to the moon again. One day we WILL send people to Mars. In the end we're a species driven by curiosity, by pushing the boundaries, and by telling nature that, no matter what barriers it puts in place for us we'll damn well destroy them if we feel they hinder us in any way. And for that reason humans will one day excel the stars again; mark my words on it.
Kinda always bothered me that NASA put a American flag on the moon. Shouldn't it be a flag of the Earth instead or something? Americans wouldn't have got there without the contributions of Galileo, various rocket innovations from the Germans & Japanese and too many others to mention. The moon landing should be looked at as an accomplishment of humanity rather than America's ego.

John Madden!
John Madden!
Football.
Football.
I'm laughing for real right now.
Here's the speech Nixon prepared in the event that the mission to the moon failed. Titled "Forever Mankind".
"Fate has ordained that the men who went to the moon to explore in peace will stay on the moon to rest in peace. These brave men, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, know that there is no hope for their recovery. But they also know that there is hope for mankind in their sacrifice. These two men are laying down their lives in mankind's most noble goal: the search for truth and understanding. They will be mourned by their families and friends; they will be mourned by their nation; they will be mourned by the people of the world; they will be mourned by a Mother Earth that dared send two of her sons into the unknown. In their exploration, they stirred the people of the world to feel as one; in their sacrifice, they bind more tightly the brotherhood of man. In ancient days, men looked at stars and saw their heroes in the constellations. In modern times, we do much the same, but our heroes are epic men of flesh and blood. Others will follow, and surely find their way home. Man's search will not be denied. But these men were the first, and they will remain the foremost in our hearts. For every human being who looks up at the moon in the nights to come will know that there is some corner of another world that is forever mankind"
I remember a nice, albeit old joke my grandfather told me. He heard it a few days after the landing: Mr. President - the Russians have landed on the moon - they're painting it red! What do we do? Let them, said the president. An hour later the guy storms in the office again - Mr. President - the Communists have painted half of the moon red! Why aren't we doing anything?! LET THEM, I SAID - shouted the president. An hour later the guy walks in the room with a gloomy look. He opens the curtains and reveals a red moon. The president quietly says: Go and write Coca-Cola on it.
Snake? Snake! Snaaaake!
That one guy looks like Tom Hanks.
That picture makes me feel like I'm in that lunar module
It's sad we almost have made no progress for 42 years.
JFK was last good president.
Well the belief that we haven't advanced any where in the last 42 years isnt quite true. When you look at the technology the Shuttle Program has allowed us to develop and test, in the 1960's 9 days was the peak amount of time for a single space mission, whereas now they have the ability to last well over 21 days in a space module like the lunar lander. ISS will now allow us to have a large scale "Gas Station" allowing for future space modules to re supply there allowing for longer duration missions. In 1969 they landed on the moon, it was hard it was a monumental challenge, after all my calculator has more processing power than the entire Saturn V rocket, over the last 42 years they have been developing new technologies to allow us to return to the moon, and further celestial bodies easier than the original moon landings. Yes I believe they should have returned to a Lunar program earlier however there are still great challenges to be overcome including developing new engines what burn more efficiently and produce great amounts of force, only once these have been developed can we return to the moon.
For everyone saying that we should return to the moon: Why? There's no point, besides putting up other flags, I guess.
not just the moon, but other planets!
if this happened on modern age armstrong would have said "FIRST!"
if this happened on modern age armstrong would have said "FIRST!"
And then he would have been banned.
