Bro I've been in a similar situation three times. I saw the need to put myself in hospital when I saw how others were reacting to me. I was self-destructing and not one person around me knew what to do. Luckily I had great doctors and a great support from the few friends I had left at the time.
You certainly seem to be able to see the emerging problem, which is more than most of the people in those kinds of hospitals can say. Understand that it isn't your fault that you feel that way and that if you just let the professionals do what they do (while, and this is important, making sure what they're doing is helping) and you'll at least start to feel better in a couple of days.
I sincerely hope you feel better man, I know that kind of shit can be rough.
Thanks man I really appreciate that. I'm just trying to prepare myself. Will they let me smoke cigarettes (Here in the UK we have the smoking ban so it would need to be at a door outside). Do they let me out? What about mp3 players? Are they gonna make me wear that degrading white gown?
It depends, I think, on both your age and what kind of place you go to.
Usually for me it began with a trip to the ER, explaining that I'm suicidal and stuff. Then the ER psychologist talks to you for a minute, and decides to put you in the hospital's Psychiatric area. In these areas of regualr hospitals they usually don't even allow cell phones :/
Then if the hospital itself doesn't have an in-patient psychiatric program, they'll get an ambulance to take you to a hospital that does, or in my case one time, a hospital that specializes in psychiatry.
In all three cases of mine, I wasn't in there for more than 9 days, but because it is a short-term in-patient system usually it's very structured, in a way that they can see how you react to therapy and possibly medications. In all three cases, there wasn't a computer to be found, nor a cell phone, etc. There was a free pay-phone you could sign up for time to use, so you aren't completely cut off. But again, there was a certain list of people you could call based on who your parents put on the list.
If it is serious, they may put you in a long-term (or "residential") care. I'm not sure how that works, but I'm sure there is some kind of internet access after a week or three when they know you won't get upset by seeing things on the internet.
This was all my experience - I know it would have really helped to know what I was getting into when I first went to the hospital. This is for the U.S. by the way - it may be somewhat different if you are in a different country, but I assume some of the things are the same.
I've been before, but they let me go home. I'm 19. Thanks for this information I'll take it all on board. I hope I don't have to stay in for more than 9-10 days...I'm more worried about how my parents will take this :( They can be so patronising, and the guilt/embarrassment will make me want to kill myself even more.

It's also my birthday in 8 days :(

in denmark you're able to smoke cigarettes. you might not be able to have an mp3 player all the time, as you can potentially strangle yourself with it.
oh and, and in denmark you're also wearing your own clothes while you're there.

In the U.S. (or at least my state, I'm not sure on the laws) the line between adolescent and adult care is drawn at 21 - meaning, you or I would be placed with anyone from like 13-21 year-olds. Because of that, and because they usually have to keep the wings pretty locked up (from a safety standpoint) I would venture to say smoking isn't allowed. What they might do though is offer you free (or at least a free trial) of like, Non-Smoking stuff (Patches, Gum, etc.). I know there's even a few anti-depressants that are prescribed to kick smoking (I'm on WelButrin, which 10 years ago my hairdresser used to quit), so if you're looking to stop smoking cigs then there is an added bonus.
Usually there is a buffer period when you first get to the dedicated wing. Like, if you don't shank someone or cuss after three days you get bumped up to a new ranking where you get to walk around outside. As with the rest of my posts, this is for U.S. But I am taking this from the experience I had in the U.S. East Coast's best psych hospital (Sheppard-Pratt).
As for the MP3 player, usually the only thing you get to actually keep when you get there is your clothing, minus belts and possibly shoestrings. The rest that was on you gets placed in a bag which then gets taken with you (from original hospital to psychiatry hospital). As I said, usually the short-term wings are very structured, and don't allow things like that :(
White Gowns - if you go to a regular hospital first, in all of my cases they make you strip down to underwear (no t-shirt either D:) and put on the hospital gown. But as soon as you get to the dedicated hospital/wing, and after someone there checks your clothes for contraband, you get your clothing back (of course minus belts and maybe shoestrings - don't wear like, goth pants with metal spikes or some shit, they won't let you wear your pants). It isn't going to be a bunch of ill teens with nothing on but gowns with their ass hanging out :-p
Depending on the policy of the hospital, you may or may not have a room mate. 2 out of three times I had one - they may scare you if they have a different illness you aren't understanding, but you should remember they are probably as bewildered as you are. Talking to a peer, even a total stranger, really helps the healing process along.
Also depending on the policies of the hospital, it may or may not be co-ed. Obviously your room mate would never be a female, and if your roommate is Bi/Gay, and you feel uncomfortable, they can change roommates for you.
Showers aren't like a jail-house - you usually have one shower to each room which is great if you don't have a roommate, but also not too bad if you do because it forces you two to communicate.
As a rule of thumb, don't give out any personal details - refrain from using your last name if you can; some of the patients may have issues that may put you in harm if you let them know your identity fully.
While friendships can be forged rather quickly in those circumstances, don't try to contact anyone you meet when you are better and released - same reasoning applies as above.
Most important - by law psych hospitals in the U.S. are required to have a 24/7 access phone number to report abuse by staff - do not hesitate to use it. Sometimes there are sick fucks who like to dick with sick people - report them.
I hope I'm at least partially clearing up some questions you have - but unfortunately I'm talking from a U.S. standpoint. But it should be similar :)

You dont have multiple contacts?
I'm a little annoyed my hook up in my town is always reliant on my friends being able to pick up and pick me up. I don't have my own car, and I can't get on to that dealer. Also, i never am in town long enough to find another one, which is alright since my friends dealer delivers good quality :D
Suited and booted and off to get drunk
hooray
Why disagree? its annoying having to rely on friends for a hook up rather than being able to pick up myself. anyhow, bodyboarding and toking tomorrow hopefully. night DD
Am I the only one who's noticed that people are generally embarrassed to say that they have a shit dealer? EVERY guy I've met who smokes weed always makes out like they get the ~~best shit~~~ and they tell me to smell it and I'm like "uhh it's ok"
What the fuck Cypher I didn't recognise you without the raptor head avatar.

Can't get enough of Frank Sinatra at the moment.
Frank Sinatra is pretty cool, I used to like him a long time ago.

My friend does that. I do have a shit dealer though so I can't really talk.
He's one of those people who can can write about the most philosophical and down-to-earth stuff, and can still be perfectly professional (despite the sometimes dark nature of his lyrics and/or music), non-angsty and completely respectable. Not to mention his voice is amazing.
