i know im late but damn this guy
He's right in a sense, there's no scientific proof that brain size is directly correlated to intelligence, you also have to take into account how complex the brain is (i.e. the amount of creases in the brain is said to be proportional to how intelligent the animal is, with humans coming up top and dolphins coming in second). Bare in mind i'm not siding with the brain size side or the complexity side, i'm just quoting what I learned from A-level Psychology.
Smart is just a few letters we threw together and a meaning we made for it that we have changed to separate us. All smart is is knowing one thing more then another thing like monkeys they understand how to survive out in forests more then we do so that makes us stupid in surviving alot of the time out there. Fish can find where they were born and lay more eggs there can we do that, birds understand how to fly without any outside help, some animals have the ability to understand time without a block with numbers and lines on it. We aren't smart but we have adapted to the ways we call normal

Perhaps you would be interested in wikipedia's article on neuroscience because personally, I would rather listen to a neuroscientist over a psychologist on this matter.

You forget that our intelligence allows us to do all things better using tools that we create. Except the laying eggs thing which has very little to do with intelligence and more to do with reproduction strategy.
Blue whales aren't primates
And they have less gray matter proportional to body mass
Don't try to be smart please
Why is it the proportionality that matters rather than the raw amount? Is it because the same proportion of their brain has to be used to maintain bodily functions and the likes as ours? Or is it some more vague reason?
Our closest living relatives take 7 years to master how to crack a nut. We can master it in 7 seconds.
Yes we are a smart species.
We invented the telephone!
Humans are the only species that know they'll die.
Humans are the only species that know they'll die.
how the hell did you find that out?
We are paragons of intelligence, it's not fair to compare us to aliens, who would have perhaps a 2-10 million year head start.
Also, quantum mechanics would be as hard to the average alien as it would be to the average human, they would simply have a better understanding of it.
Why do you think so much about this? It's obvious, we're pretty smart. What creature can kill a woolly mammoth, using only a brain and 1/2 clubs? We can kill sharks, tigers, the kings of the water and so on.
we're pretty cool cause we can kill other species and feel good about it
:smug:
( but if you compare us to extraterrestrial beings, some might be downright retarded, others might be jesus fucking christ. it's different, but in general we are smart )

why are You capitalizing Random Words in the middle of your Sentence?
why are You capitalizing Random Words in the middle of your Sentence?
That's not how you copy Someone, when You're Trying to be Funny!
I think it's worth posting something about Alex the African Grey.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_%28parrot%29
At the time when he passed away he had the intelligence of a five-year-old human and the emotional level of a two year old, which was on par with dolphins and great apes.

I knew you would post on that, yet again.
Anyway, I changed it to be slightly more grammatically correct, happy now? I was hoping you would focus more on the actual thing I was saying, rather then something you would be able to bitch about as you always do.
Optical illusions prove we could be smarter.
Humans are the only species that know they'll die.
Other species comprehend death quite well, actually. If a dog is attached to another dog and that other dog dies, it will be extremely depressed. The gorilla that lost its kitten even understood what happened and started crying.
Maybe were not smart, just that Animals are Stupid.
Optical illusions prove we could be smarter.
However, optical illusions are just that. We do not perceive them in such a way because we aren't intelligent, but because of the ways our eyes work. If they appeared so because we were stupid, we wouldn't be able to realize they were illusions to begin with.
However, optical illusions are just that. We do not perceive them in such a way because we aren't intelligent, but because of the ways our eyes work. If they appeared so because we were stupid, we wouldn't be able to realize they were illusions to begin with.
Quite right.
Most of them are to do with the way the brain processes what the eye picks up. Because a lot of what you see is 'made up' by the brain, or because it corrects certain things, you end up being able to 'exploit' it to create illusions.
Refraction is a good example of your brain 'making stuff up'. You look at a fish in water, and you see it at one point, but really, it's at another point. Your brain can't know the history of the light that your eyes absorbed, so it assumes that if the light is coming in from that angle, that the fish must be in a certain place (while really it's in a different place).
The fact that we're SO developed is probably why we're able to be 'tricked' by those things.
There's about a 4 tier setup at FP:
1. Gmod players/general people who know barely anything about computers.
2. Gmod players who know a bit about computers, but seem to understand it only when it's printed word for word.
3. General programmers/beginning programmers/students looking into computers or a tech related business as a job or future(teens, not the 12s).
4. Programmers/IT/actual people who work with programming for a living or are about to graduate and know quite a bit.
To be honest, most of the bad posts are either Tier 1 or 2, and most sarcasm comes from tier 3. T4 = people who have made huge mods/plugins/addons that don't care about the rest of FP.
you have no clue what you're talking about. just because somebody is a programmer or IT person doesn't make them the smartest on FP. most sarcasm doesn't come from them either. not everyone on the forum is even interested in computers, but does that determine their intelligence level? no, idiot.
However, optical illusions are just that. We do not perceive them in such a way because we aren't intelligent, but because of the ways our eyes work. If they appeared so because we were stupid, we wouldn't be able to realize they were illusions to begin with.
This is what I was trying to say, I guess smart wasn't the right word to descirbe it. It's still a 'brain failure' as Neil Tyson says it.
I consider us the smartest because no other species has been able to do this:

We're the smartest species we know of. Until a new species comes around that redefines the whole paradigm of intelligence, we're not just the smartest species on Earth, we're the smartest in the universe. It's cocky to say, but every bit of knowledge and experience ever collected over time has pointed to this.
We can't just assume that there are other, smarter species around the universe (although they probably exist) and redefine our definition of words around them. That's like saying blue whales are small because there just might be mile-long organisms somewhere in the universe.
Facepunch + Philosophy = Flame War
Anyway, the OP is an idiot. Intelligence is not something you can quantify. It is too complex and split in to too many groups. There is
1) Instinct/common sense
2) Use of tools
3) Problem-solving
4) Curiosity
5) Spatial reasoning
6) Imagination
7) Dreams
8) Desire
9) Comprehension of death
10) Critical thinking
11) Foresight
12) Language
and that's just off the top of my head. Also, the only other animals we have to compare to are dolphins, apes, and birds, and we aren't even sure if they have half of those. Each brain is different. We have no equal and none superior, thus we have no understanding of intelligence.
Yes, we are.
I'd like to put my two cent's in.
At birth, we don't know how to do much at all, we have to learn it first, when other animals are born, they know what to do from instinct, so in a way, we are not smarter than animals, we just have the capacity to learn thing's, which is probobly why it takes a human baby about a year to walk under intensive care, but a baby giraffe is walking in a couple of hours. We are just a full of it/selfish species that think's they are the best because they know more, when in reality we would get our ass's kicked by a lot of animal's that arent as smart. A human baby wouldn't last a day in the wild like any other animal baby would. Other animals probobly are smarter than us humans, were too selfish. If you watch animals in the wild, you never notice anything going wrong with what theyre doing, only if another predator animal comes and tries to eat them. Imagine humans preying on other humans, we'd just shoot them, other animals use theyre own strength and intelligence, while we take the easy way out of it by using something that was supposed to "make our lives easier" when really, it just makes us lazier and causes chaos on us. Our way of living has gotten to a point where it's almost normal to be fat and lazy and not go to college and actually utilize that extra brain capacity that God has given you. I'd say that your not smart unless your above average for being physically fit and have a degree in oral surgury or something. You just completely fail at your life then, and you know it.
Smarter? Maybe not. While a human is more intelligent, and certainly capable of more complex thought than chimps, I wouldn't say humans are 'smarter'. There's some pretty dumb motherfuckers in the gene pool.
I'm pretty sure we're the smartest species we know of.
We think, therefore we are.
Smartness is relative.
