• Are the Marines becoming defunct?

No branch of the military will be obsolete until the enemy learns how to outsmart bullet.
Huh, I thought the marines were part of the navy?

In the civilian leadership structure of the United States military, the Marine Corps is a component of the United States Department of the Navy, often working closely with U.S. naval forces for training, transportation and logistic purposes; however, in the military leadership structure the Marine Corps is a separate branch.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Marine_Corps
Lolz my uncle is in the marines. if they got defunct then he wouldnt be working.
Are other branches of the military becoming defunct? What future branches do you think might be formed? Also, are tanks becoming defunct or what do you think the future of tanks is?
Tanks will become defunct once tesla/laser capabilities increase. Right now, there's a van with a Tesla Coil that can from medium-range fry IEDs with a 99% detection rate. They are also working on a typical looking truck that is like a James Bond Car. It has reinforced tires to prevent punctures, it has oil slick, caltrops, and a smoke screen. It's primary weapon is a 360-degree mounted laser that comes out of the Sun-Roof and is controlled by a screen and joystick in the back seat. It'll be more agile, disguisable, and cheaper than a tank.

Once railguns become practical tanks and bunkers will be utterly defenseless.
Once railguns become practical tanks and bunkers will be utterly defenseless.
They won't become practical for a long time. The power required to fire one is massive. That is what a Railgun Shot does in slow-mo. The speed at which it fires ignites the air around it on fire. However, that force comes from somewhere. The railgun is about the size of a small house, meanwhile it has about six generators, each about the size of the railgun or larger to power this. They are having trouble fitting this on a Battlecruiser, let alone making it an effective weapon in the hands of a soldier or mounted on a land vehicle anytime soon. [editline]10:49PM[/editline] Oh, and the special metal that the projectile is made of is fucking expensive. Like, ridiculously so.

The Marines are a department of the Navy... The Men's Department.
The Marines are more mobile, they go in first and do a lot of the fighting. Then the slower but larger and more powerful Army arrives with all the Heavy Equipment to finish the job and dig in to hold what what captured.

Ever since the tank was born there's been a neverending arms race of new antitank weapons and armor designed to defeat said weapon. I see the future of tank armament to be either in larger bores (around 140mm) or guns using electrothermal-chemical technology in the next decade or two.

Chlorine Gas has been banned since it was first used, because it's probaly the most painful way to die ever invented.
So you just basically obliterated your own thread.
Not really. Couldn't the Rangers and Delta force just do the same thing as the Marines?
I'm just curious. I suppose that a branch of the military may loose it's importance or closed down due to a limited defense expenditure. Couldn't the Marines become defunct of the Army just start making some of its units perform the same exact role as the Marines?
The Marines are really a branch that's been given the privilege to exist. Some politicians want to shut them down, but they do such a good job in fighting, that the US wants to keep them. So no, as long as theirs war, the Marines will exist. Rangers are more airborne types, but they could, considering the Army would invest in a training program and equipment for that type of stuff.
We haven't upgraded to the Nano Epoch yet.
Nostalgia. I think I'll play EE now.
