Honestly what does this show have over other fucking HUNDREDS of shows of similar tone, similar writing styles, similar distribution and similar time slots that warrants people to obsess over it? I don't get it. Why this one? It's okay to like it but why go all the way into obsession?
Why ponies?
The post Colin made on the first page sums it quite nicely.

Can't explain it better
Arguably higher quality than other shows, made by industry veterans.
Still doesn't justify to me why is it the ponies. Within both the western and eastern animation industries there are shows of tremendous budget, animation quality, loveable characters, with fantastic writing and musical scores (Like some of the more popular ones like Spongebob or Adventure Time, or in Japanese animation, Cowboy Bebop or Neon Genesis Evangelion).
Hell this is even more exaggerated than the Sonic fandom, considering the age range.
Can't explain it better
That explains bronies, not ponies. I don't get why people love these ponies so fucking much considering they don't like the old characters they're based on. The show may be good but there's gotta be something in the ponies people identify themselves with to cling to it in such a way you get a persecution complex.
This show is going to make me shed a tear. Why do I have to have a soft spot for these people? :C

The show has a lot of old cartoon makers working on it such as Power Puff Girls, Dextor's lab, many other old shows and a lot of references to many movies or childhood shows.
That was in response to someone saying that I specifically go out of my way to see mlp.
Your complaint is that you're annoyed because you see ponies all the time, so my point still stands.
I'm still arguing about the unoriginality of it all and how much everything relating to it gets disproportionately liked just because it's part of a fandom. I also stated that the fandom itself is so big that no matter how shitty something is, it's gonna be voted up/loved.
MLP is one of the biggest instant-win cards out there at the moment and that's why I dislike it.
While what you say is partially true, Daij is right in that it's not new nor exclusive to ponies in any way.

And that's what I think a real documentary / study should be about.
I'm a pretty big MLP fan or at least I was, and I've never bought into the usual explanations for why it is apperantly so good. Some people say because of the animation quality, visual style, 'references that only old people will understand', humor, Lauren Faust, etc. etc.
They're... Well, they're arguments for some good aspects of the show. But they don't at all explain why it exploded into such a huge fandom.
I think it is an interesting and fascinating phenomenon that could be treated much better than it is. It's not just something that should be waved away or condemned, to me it really must mean something.
My theory is that it's the whole idea of friendship and kindness that pulled people in. Perhaps people had had too much of the cynicism of the internet and, almost randomly, that whole feeling spontaneously turned into a huge focus on the exact opposite.
But how would I know? That's just a hypothesis, nobody really seems to be able to explain exactly why this happened.
Even the word "fandom" just fucking reeks of virginity.
The worst thing about it all is I'm sure they think we are the losers. Sigh.

People band together around interests that either aren't common or are deemed socially deviant. MLP is really neither of those now, but that's how the fandom got its start.

The like of the show has really become bigger than the show itself. I really doubt you can pin one element of the show that draws people to it, it's more a mass intoxication kinda thing. When enjoyment of something's spiraled so far people will turn everything into a positive aspect, and at that point it's impossible to tell what's the true linchpin of the like or just a synthesized reason.

That guy made a follow-up to that video and explained autism and how it affects his ability to act properly in a social situation and all that. It was kind of uplifting to know he's aware of it and tries his hardest to not let it get to him, but it was sad that he was basically forced to apologize for being himself because of the huge uproar his video caused. Poor guy
These threads always play out the same.
First come the normal people, who react to the video, and maybe give a bit of their opinion.
Then come the guys who react to the weirdness of the video by mocking them and insulting them.
Afterwards the holier than though neutral pricks come in, saying we shouldn't generalize the fandom in long ass paragraphs, while at the same time generalizing facepunch.
Then the neutral leaning brony guys come in, and start accusing people of some sort of brony holocaust. This leads to a massive shitstorm, with people fighting to the death over ponies.
Then the bronies come in, and add fuel to the shitstorm.
Then a mod (Dai) closes the thread.
A week later the cycle is reborn with a new thread.
Except this one isn't closed.
Yet?

To be honest, what's different between watching Adventure Time or Spongebob or Regular Show compared to MLP? Some false guise of manliness? Shit, I don't know, but it's ridiculous. Let people enjoy what they want to enjoy. As long as it isn't destructive (and bronies generally aren't, and if you think they affect you negatively it's usually your fault for letting them) then what's the problem?
Well, MLP is kinda meant for eight year old children, specifically girls. Adventure Time and those other shows have plenty of adult humor on the other hand.
Well, MLP is kinda meant for eight year old children, specifically girls. Adventure Time and those other shows have plenty of adult humor on the other hand.
I've heard people argue the same thing for MLP.
I would like to start off saying I do have a negative disposition of the fandom. (read: I fucking hate it)
I just want to point out that the bronies that everyone complains about are the vocal minority. There are plenty of perfectly normal people who participate in what would be considered less that normal activities. You don't think that a lot of furries are perfectly normal people outside of that fandom? Why is it so hard to grasp that there's only a small amount of bronies who actually fit into the category of "hurr durr autistic sperglord nerdking" and those are the vocal minority that soil the reputation of the entire fandom.
With that said, I think a children's show is a stupid thing to obsess over in such detail (but again there's a difference between obsession and merely enjoying it.) To be honest, what's different between watching Adventure Time or Spongebob or Regular Show compared to MLP? Some false guise of manliness? Shit, I don't know, but it's ridiculous. There's a pretty big difference actually, look at something like Animaniacs

You can look up more yourself, that's about the shortest video I could find of some adult humor in a kids show.
AFAIK, Spongebob also has some adult humor in it, but it's considered a kids show (again, you can youtube it, but a lot of the videos are pretty shitty). I can't speak for Adventure Time, but I'd imagine it would too. Thing is, those shows are generally geared towards boys - yeah, it might be stereotypical, but it does hold some truth. I'm not saying you can't watch what you want to watch, I'm just asking for people to quit shoving it in my face. Bronies are pretty much furries 2.0 - pony versions of everything and furry versions of everything, clopping and yiffing, etc. Understandably, the reason why I don't like furries is because they also shove it into my face.
And on that note, there aren't a lot of good fandoms out there in general.
Sure, every fandom does have it's vocal idiots, but it's hardly an excuse since ALL fandoms have them.
To be honest I think its wrong to condemn these people. To tell them what they are doing is self-destructive? Of course, they need to know. But acting like a 13 year old girl and calling them names is only going to send them further into their zone of social deprivation.
Even the idea of saying "Only spergs go to conventions" is bad in itself. As was explained a few pages back, its this attitude that makes shit like this comprised of almost entirely of people who obsess over it. If more normal people would attend, it would be a lot less flowing with spaghetti.
Leading by example is probably the best thing bronies, anime fans, furries, homestuck fans and all other taboo fandoms can do. Be a functioning, respectful adult and do your fandom good at the same time.
See, there's no problem with autistic people obsessing over it, they have a psychological developmental disorder and that causes most of them to not ever pass into what most of us call "adulthood", keeping attitudes we consider childish like ritualistic and obsessive behavior, often restricted to just this and never growing tired of certain things. Autistic people obsess over anything, not just ponies, that's part of the disorder.
I really don't have a problem with people liking MLP, or disliking it, and I find people who persecute it as childish as people who obsess over it. It's obviously merged by a fair degree with the furry fandom, having similar themes and such and having people who 'converted' from being furries to being bronies. I'm just gonna assume it's all some spur of the moment crap typical from our Generation Y, since I seriously, seriously fail to understand, why ponies? Is it because they're cute or something? I get that the show may be good, but it's the fact that it's ponies that they're popular. You could write something like Spongebob with more adult references and it won't have such a cult following as MLP.
Like, my theory is that it is a peer pressure thing. My friends like it, so I like it too, my friends realize I like it so they want to show they like it more, and it escalates from there. It's dumb and probably wrong but it's the closest idea I can relate to it.

Its not like these conventions don't have positives. Its not like "loaf around with a bunch of social outcasts". There's always projects and merch and events that make the encounters fun. Its just the obsessive people always drive the normal people away.
Anime conventions I can understand because it's an entire genre, and it's a springboard for lots of clothing / retail / etc stores, and massive amounts of variety in what you can do. I can understand Fur cons on the same level even though I would cry if I were told I had to go to one because they're also an entire, huge genre that's been cultivated over fuckin', like, 20 years now. But Brony cons are stupid. Maybe if it were like "Older males who watch assorted shows that are not aimed at their age group" cons but at the moment I see it as just them deciding that because they've build up steam so fast they just GOTTA have a 'con. All I see at these cons is, really, nothing happening. There are some terrible bands (see "Neighsayers") and some impromptu parties, but it's all thrown together and in all the footage of cons I see it seems like everyone at Brony-cons are just on an endless mission to find something to do, because a convention for a subculture about a single TV show with a very narrow focus rapidly runs out of shit to do.

I think cons developed naturally, actually, for bronies. Like Bronycon in New York, it was originally just a brony meetup (which is pretty fucking weird in itself), but it got so popular it made more sense for them to hold a convention. And other cons sprung up for fans in other areas.
And I was actually surprised to see the, uh, "band" in the documentary. From what I've heard about the conventions, they involve panels involving various projects and people from the show production itself, as well as vendors pandering clothing, toys, and other assorted shit. I don't recall ever hearing about a band or a party.
Reminds me more of a flee market or a reptile expo than one giant spaghetti meet and greet.

That's Neighslayer in the documentary right? I remember watching the livestream for January's con as they performed. They were really kind of shit.
Also they were followed up by a bunch of awkward fat chicks singing songs from the show and being horribly off time. The whole thing made me feel embarrassed to even be associated with these people.
