I had a real messed up dream a week ago but I didn't decide to post it until now.
I dreamt that I was swimming at some swimming pool place, and that it was getting dark and cloudy and shit outside. It then started to pour down with rain and giant black hailstones whilst there was frequent flashes of lightening. I saw several buildings burst into flame because of being hit by lightening and the dream felt real. I really felt like I was swimming around and shit. Eventually I had a massive jolt and spasm and awoke in my bed to find that a cat had jumped on top of me.

Anywho, I downloaded the sleep cycle alarm clock for my iPhone. I recommend it. Not because it'll make you go lucid DIRECTLY, but if you use it for about a week, two things will happen.
One, you'll get WAY more sleep than usual. It's fantastic.
Two, you'll get graphs of when you sleep and when you're in REM. Use those graphs to pick an approx. time to WBTB, and you'll do it every time. I've tried it exclusively WBTB with this app and I've done it three days in a row.

Basically you just put it on your bed and it uses the accelerometer to graph your movement. Or something. I don't know or care.
But it works, that's the important thing. As you can see, I hit REM twice, once roughly 90 minutes through sleep, and once again roughly 270 minutes through sleep. At six I woke up, then immediately did a WBTB, then as that phase naturally ended (roughly 3/4 between seven and eight on the graph), the alarm woke me up.
This is my first graph (new phone), but the more of them you create, the easier it'll be to determine a good window for WBTB, as well as the length of an LD you desire. (Later REM cycles create longer dreams, but you don't want to sleep TOO long.)
It's also nice because quite frankly it's good to know exactly how long you slept as well as your average sleep per night. Also it wakes you up slowly, which is even better. Play Beethoven for the best effect, I personally use Symphony No. 7, it starts off slow but builds up to wake you up naturally as you would anyway.
tl;dr Get it, it's awesome.
Plus it's only a dollar.

It's actually really, REALLY well made.
You set a target time, let's say it's 9:00. Now, sleep cycles cycle in roughly 45 minute cycles, give or take 10 minutes or so. The app starts monitoring you very carefully at around 8:15. If you're in REM sleep, it lets you sleep. If you're coming out of it into light sleep, which is when you WANT to be woken up, it'll start to wake you up so you wake up really well.
Basically, you set your alarm for 9:00. It'll wake you up some time between 8:30 and 9:00, and you'll feel fantastic because you didn't wake up in the middle of REM. Damn alarm clocks.

And the best part is that even if you want to wake up at 9 but wake up at 8:30 instead, it's better to be woken up at 8:30, because you'll be in the light stages.

Nope, just set it for 7 or whatever and it'll wake you up within the half hour grace period before 7 so you'll feel great. Just experiment with it, it's great.
Just remember two things.
One, for the love of god, do not lock your iPod. The app will take care of that. You lock it, app stops and you sleep through whatever you set the alarm for.
Two, make sure you put it case down, and put it somewhere you're not super likely to roll over it.
Also make sure it's charged before you do it, and try to keep it plugged in WHILE the app runs. I have a wall charger so it doesn't matter to me, but I'm guessing the app is fairly CPU intensive.

I think I've read something explaining this before. I guess that dreaming is meant to be the mind's recreation - if we experienced it as if we were awake, then our mind would have to function in a similar way to when we're conscious, and so would not rest properly. That's my viewpoint on it, based on the scraps I remember from whatever the hell it was I must have read... It doesn't really make sense though, when you consider those people who lucid dream every night, or a lot, at least. And I've just completely contradicted myself. Sorry about that.
You're mostly right. The brain is fed information all day and when you sleep your brain is like WAT LOL and so then it has what are basically phantom thoughts which are so real that you just think it is without questioning it, because we rarely question reality (which is why reality checks becoming a habit is useful, they will carry over and fail).
