Was driving back from Vancouver.

Thought as I passed it I had seen a sasquatch. Nope, just a cow.
That's no moose!
Met a great example of humanity today.
I had beeped at him while he was sitting at a green light because he wasnt paying attention. He followed me to the grocery store came in and and confronted me about it saying "next time you honk at someone you better be prepared to back it up 'cause ill shove that horn right up your ass".
Langley is fucked up with people like that.
Hey Pentium, how was the flight to Japan? I want to go there soon but I'm fucking terrified of planes when I know I shouldn't be but I am anyway. Like actually terrified.
I passed all my courses! I got a D- in Robotics, but that's still a pass! One course left to go this spring and then I'm done!
:snip: moved to 3ds thread

If Air China was any cheaper there would be dead chickens and herbs hanging form the overhead baggage and old ladies playing mahjong in the back. I was not aware you could get shittier than WestJet and all they do is give you water and a package of peanuts.
The flight was fine otherwise. There was never a question of weather we were going to make it or not. It was long but I loaded up the laptop with some Batsu games and a spare battery and after that died seven hours later there was in-flight entertainment you could go to. There was not any place to plug in my laptop though so I had to recharge when I had a layover in Taipei.
I'm going back for a week in late July but I got a layover in Los Angeles. Ugh, patdowns and TSA grilling.
Lay over in LA? That seems weird. Every single lay overs I've seen from Air Canada are either in Toronto or Vancouver (From Montreal)
Cheap flights come with quirky schedules.

I'm going to waste a measureable amount of time just in airports. :suicide:
Well instead of paying the airline, you are paying with your time. Always happens in logistics and transportation.
Was thinking about maybe going to Osaka to meet a friend this October, it looks like a decent time to visit Japan. Now to just get over my ridiculous fear of flying.
I'm hoping I can afford a trip to Japan sometime this year, but it seems unlikely. I guess my grad trip will be visiting my buddies in Michigan.
Got about 10k saved up, I want to spend about a month in Osaka.
You gonna rent a small flat or are you planning to book into two or three hotels?
Got about 10k saved up, I want to spend about a month in Osaka.
Better than me, I'm hoping to have between 3-5k by July for about 2 weeks between Tokyo and the Kansai region.
You gonna rent a small flat or are you planning to book into two or three hotels?
I don't have a damn clue. Tbh I never took the plane or left North America at all, I need to educate myself tons of all this visa shit, traveler's insurance, increase my credit limit or something because idk how to get all of my money abroad, shit like that. I don't even know how in advance I should book, the difference between a small flat or a hotel beside maybe the price?
Anyway, all this is super new to me.
I can try to help with what limited knowledge I have.
When I went to Germany I took 100 euro and had my credit limit raised. Japan I hear is still a very cash-oriented society, so it may be better to bring about 50,000 yen. Most ATMs will let you withdraw cash from your credit card, but the credit card company starts calculating interest from the day of withdrawal, not the statement date. Depending on what bank you're with they may have some kind of agreements with foreign banks (I'm with PC Financial so I'm fucked there) that would let you withdraw from your debit card. Also if you're going to be travelling, call your credit card company and let them know, because if you just suddenly try buying something in Japan one day they'll think someone stole your card unless you tell them beforehand. When I went to Europe I told them I'd be in Finland and Germany and tested my card buying some random thing at a souvenir shop in Helsinki airport. Make sure to test your card to make sure it works before you actually need it, so that way if it doesn't you can call and bitch to get it sorted out before you actually need to use it.
When I went to Berlin I booked in late May for a trip in August. Earlier is usually better, but keep an eye out for deals, some agencies will have deals on airfare or hotels sometimes. Also ALWAYS BROWSE TRAVEL SITES INCOGNITO. They have been known to leave cookies behind that remember if you've searched something before and will show you higher prices for it the next time you browse in an attempt to scare you into buying for fear of further price increases.
A small flat is basically an apartment, meaning you're basically going to rent an apartment for a month and live out of it. This means no room service, and usually no amenities, room service, gym, pool, or food in the building. Hell you'll be luck if it has laundry. The flat will probably be in a 1-room tatami mat apartment and you'll likely be sleeping on a futon unless you want to spend more for a fancier one. A hotel is a hotel, it has what you expect of a hotel, but it's going to cost more. If you can get a decently-rated 4-star hotel for under $100 a night that's nearby public transit you're doing fantastic.
Traveller's insurance can be purchased through your agency or through CAA. When you get it print the certificate and keep it in your wallet.
Canadians don't need a visa for Japan unless they're planning on staying more than 60 days I believe (it's either 60 or 90). However you need a passport to leave the country to go anywhere.
Also it's probably not worth it to get a roaming plan from a Canadian phone company for your cell phone. They charge out the ass for them. Find an old smartphone, get it unlocked, and buy a prepaid plan at the airport in Osaka, it'll almost definitely be cheaper.
As for my fear of flying I just try to tell myself that it's irrational, that it's statistically the safest form of travel, and then I pray for a safe flight and landing.
I went with $500 cash, the credit card with a $500 limit and $2000 in chequings, plus an extra $150 cash set aside to top up my Suica transit card. Fuck tickets.
The greatest thing in the world is that if you have a bank card that supports PLUS...

...and you should because most Canadian debit cards do well you're in luck, because Japanese 7-11's support it too. Something about withdrawing cash at a backalley convenience store ATM.
I planned my trips through Expedia which do a good job helping me arrange the flights and hotel. You can also tell it you want to stay at multiple hotels during your trip.
How many of you folk are in Toronto? I'm starting to think it might be an ok idea to move there.
Toronto is an OK place I guess
- A Vancouverite
I live in Toronto as well. It's neat that the subway can take you to so many busy places, but good luck getting on it when you're around the southern U.
I'm a Toronto person. Been here a little over a year now. It's alright.

Move to Montreal, become superior frenchman.

Tabarnak.
Come to Toronto, we think we're better than everyone and our mayor doesn't smoke crack anymore. You too can become the most American of Canadians if you move to the Centre of the Universe.

You still lost though.
But I'm still here, aren't I?
Of all the days for the TTC to have something fuck up on the subway, it had to be on my birthday.

That sucks... but Happy Birthday! Are you getting cake?
That sucks... but Happy Birthday! Are you getting cake?
My mom made me a giant chocolate chip cookie. Like, one the size of a whole baking tray.
The fire at Runnymede?
Yeah, and that was where I was heading too. Had to get off at Christie, take it north to Dupont, then take that to Runnymede. Took just over 2 hours to get home.
