Drum Discussion thread V3! (where did v2 even go?)
32 replies, posted
After using the search function, and then going back about 20 pages in the music section, I have failed to find the v2 thread. I know it's not very active but having a thread to discuss playing the best instrument ever is definitely needed.
To get some content rolling in, here a video with audio from a john bonham drum track outtake for fool in the rain. The main beat is based of a variation of the purdy shuffle (If i recall correctly.)

The shuffle can be found about 1:30 in this video here

To add some content: I'm gonna be playing at the beginning of February after over a year of not being able to play! I am super excited but need a practice regiment. Any suggestions?
Gonna turn my two pedals into a double bass set up soon, hope it works out
Repost for new thread (you could've just revived the old one)

Where did my thread go? :v:
Anyways got 3 gigs in 4 weeks with my blues-band. First coming this weekend.
Other than that, studying for jazz-drum studies.
Right now I'm sitting and cursing at intervals and chord-progressions.

Learn progressions, then intervals.

I am. It's just that it's frustrating to remember all this stuff for the audition.

Audition for what?
Audition for what?
For jazz-drum studies. You have to take a written test and an audition, to get in.

Basic music theory it sounds like?
Basic music theory it sounds like?
Yeah. It's a theoretical test with different stuff, there's also a listening test. Before that, you have an audition where there's a bunch of teachers that watch you play with the "house-band"(consisting of other instrument teachers). I have 3 jazz-standards which I have to play, and I will get graded on my performance(technique, communication, dynamics and so on). From there they can choose if they want you to continue or not.
Drum-notation(and note values) is pretty easy for me, the problem is that I haven't gotten much use of intervals, scales etc in my years of playing.
I've started playing piano though, which makes it easier to relate to certain theoretical stuff.

I never learned how to do that, and thus I have nightmares of trying to tune timpani for auditions.
I were in my schools band in fourth and fifth grade. I was one of the percussionists. Dad got me one of the Ludwigs that has an orange UFO case.
How about that Jon Theodore?

Best drummer Mars Volta's ever had imo. He just fits in more than Pridgen and that new dude did/does.
Anyways, the bluesgig went awesome. I had a couple of drunk dudes coming up and shaking my hand after each tune we played. It was really weird, but that's how it is when you play out in the country/outback.
Look who signed my drums

I think sounds really nice, we've got a similar approach to drumming - playing busy while trying to keep it groovy and melodic :v: Also I'm digging the snare work big time!
What kind of recording setup did you have?

JESUS CHRIST CHROME PLAYED 'TITTIES DAY 2' ON FULL BLAST

I bought half the drumset when I got into my current band 4 years ago and now some bulgarian dude (well our drummer :v:) is playing on it and I switched slots to rhytm guitar and vocals, sometimes it hurts watching him hurting my cymbals.

he has a past of playing only death metal

I have a rock band mic set up on the edge of a couch that faces away from my bass drum, in my basement.
That's it.
I'm also uploading it again after I made it sound a bit clearer with Audacity, so check it out

Alesis DM8 Pro, yay or nay everybody? Reviews for electronic drum kits that aren't Roland's are rare (or at least how I'm googling they are).

I use a set of Yamaha DTXplorer, they kind of the the job for me. But I'm sure there are a lot more better drumsets out there.
Is it wrong that I can't learn traditional grip at all? I feel kind of guilty. Like I am not doing it right. Like just through self teaching I have been dependent on my right hand the whole time and my left hand can't do shit. I don't understand at all how these people control their fingers like that with so much precision. I feel like such a pleb and I want to extend my skills further but it's so hard to teach myself it when it goes against literally everything I am used to.
i didn't learn traditional grip until 9th grade, and that was all my teacher (not a percussionist) let me practice with.
i got really good with it doing marching stuff, but then over the past year and a half i've been doing a lot more drum set with matched grip.
something that i found REALLY helpful is playing sixteenth notes with each hand with a met. say, start it out at 85bpm and play RRRRRRRR LLLLLLLL RRRR LLLL RR LL RR LL and repeat that, increasing the tempo 1-2 bpm when you feel comfortable enough. that should help you a lot with left hand dexterity. I can only reeeally do 8 16ths at like 108 right now, but i can go well over 200 with just double stroke rolls.
i used to take lessons with a jazz hoss named Darryl Pellegrini, he was super amazing and he pretty much reformed the entire way i played, but i stopped after a few months because he's a cheap fuck and $50/hour was killing my wallet. I still use the music he gave me to practice, though, heheheh.

Damn I really wish I had proper teaching.
