but holy shit that site looks like ass
I'm getting the feeling it's based off the "Overhaulin" Logo:

I've never seen that before haha, but it makes me feel like I pegged the theme pretty well.
Hey, noticed my blog got linked here. I'm the one who created the idea for and the original version of the Partners in Science poster. Personally, I was a little irked at first that Oicani has been complaining about getting little to no credit, because I didn't either, but at least (s)he's been linking my post and not hiding it. I'm really surprised that it only took 21 hours for this to reach 190,000 views, and now it's at 223,000. I knew it had potential, and I wanted to sell it to friends or just over the internet, but holy crap.
Right now it's looking like it's almost out of control, with pretty much no credit given. It's tough to handle at first, but that's the internet for you.
Oicani, if anything else happens, could you let me know?
And if it does sell at all from your DA, could you also let me know?
I'm having trouble dealing with the fact that this whole thing is going on pretty much with no one telling me what's going on and communicating anything to me... I found out about the Imgur thing from a friend on Facebook, and another who found it on StumbleUpon. I guess that's another factor of having a surprise bout with popularity like this, but still.
holy shit

Pretty much my reaction.
Best I could do was credit you for your work in the post and then post it on the imgur page and pray for upvotes.
yeah, it was, someone on fast threads made that on paper for a school assignment and i redid it on ai and ps

I'm sorry but your version really bothers me because of the MLP picture for the third one instead of at least making it a silhouette of a mlp.
I kind of ruins it.
[editline]6th November 2011[/editline]
nevermind. i fucked up, you made the normal poster. Sorry.
well next time leave a watermark for your blog. Then you could have more chances on selling prints and shit
i think it could be a lot more minimalist than that
i mean just the unique shape of the moustache could be enough, or possibly with the addition of the eyebrows
the key to good minimalism is pretty much what it says, use as little as possible to get across the notion you want
at the moment i think there's way too much going on
Remove the text. It's annoying and ruins all forms of minimalism.
Then what Autumn said. A blood-red V is all that is needed, it speaks for itself, especially with a Guy Fawkes mask.
well given this was my previous attempt at minimalism, its quite some progress
I understand you mean stuff like that?
I find that Kill Bill poster more minimalistic and better than the Guy Fawkes one.
Also yes, sorta, but not so boring. I would never understand that it was a poster for The Last Airbender, UP or Wall-e without the text, which means the illustrations really fail.
I still don't get the UP one. The house with or without ballons, just ballons or the guys face would work much better and speak more for itself. I can not remember the house having a weather crane.
maybe you should start removing things and then question yourself if it still works

i removed some things on paint. IMO it's still perceptible. Maybe if you made the eyebrows a bit smoother

i understand you mean stuff like that?
unfortunately, i guess im not smart enough to come out with such elegant, witty designs
i was thinking about making some to get printed on a2 and put them on my bedroom, which is a very lame and cowardly excuse to explain why i think i dont want it to be so minimalistic
but moving on: besides it not being minimalistic enough, whats bad about it?
yeah but those are too minimal on the verge of lazy
not at the moment, it's very rough. there are a lot of things I don't like about it, basically i think you need to go back to the drawing board and think of ways to incorporate the face better and the design around it. right now it's not pleasant and easy to look at, and also the gradient around the edges isn't good.
(i still really don't like that kill bill poster so i wouldn't use anything you did there as a reference point)

i know you dont like that poster for your reasons, but i was digging the direction it was headed, its how i wanted it to be. but then i reached a point where there was nothing i could do, so i gave up and called it unfinished forever. its this kind of shit that i dont want to happen, but at this rate its all ill ever do.
i dont even know why im typing this but i gotta let it out somewhere and stuff. my father said i should leave my current uni and go for graphic design, since its something i like, but i think itd be a dumb move because im not talented like, as an example, you and autumn, who are artists i respect. so yeah i dunno sorry for this
everyone is like this in the begginning. the fact is that with more experience comes more knowledge, of composition, graphic design elements, etc, that help you push past 'wtf do i do' and make it 'ooh this works'. the more experience you have, the more you will have at your disposal every time you run into a brick wall with an idea. totally stuck on this one? more on to another film, but use what you learned from last time before you even start. just kind of have a play around in ur head about what it was about the last concept that you got stuck on, and try to have something more flexible from the get go.
it all comes down to experience. keep making new stuff. learn as you go what does and doesnt work for you.
[editline]7th November 2011[/editline]
my first few posters were pretty bad in comparison to my later ones, as i kept making them i got a better gist of things that work, how often they should be used, etc etc
[editline]7th November 2011[/editline]
once you're experienced, you can go back and revisit old posters, try new things you hadn't though of before with your gained knowledge of how posters work
I remember when my teacher started me off with illustrator. Me and the rest of the class would try to work with illustrator to make posters and stuff. Our first ones were completely horrible but after a few tries and getting to learn more about how design works and everything, it got a bit better.
I guess that if you want to be better, it's not all about trying, you also have to learn to observe other posters and ask yourself "is this good and why is it good", then apply what you learned to your own posters.
Same things for my shirts, I started pretty amateur, then I came here to facepunch and got DOG-GY to tell me those sucked haha That was a wake up call for me and after a few days I started looking at what other people had that I didn't have, whaat new techniques I could use and all that. And here I am now
What is this "minimalistic movie poster" fad about? So far I've only seen a couple good posters like that (I like rusty's) and I don't find them atractive at all. I don't think a "minimalistic" style fits what a movie poster should be.

The texture filling you gave the title is plain horrible, plus the exagerated bevel and the heavy stroke.
If the "bubbles" in the back have some sort of animation then it'd look great, the buttons are allright, but you should try another font. that one isn't really good.

but that's it. they're minimalist movie posters, not movie posters. for me, i tend to like them because to do them right you have to really capture the essence of the film, in as little visual detail as possible. they can be clever, and they can be witty, and that's what i like about them.
in no way do they replace traditional movie posters, nor are they trying to, but it's just another little path some designers go down and i think it's a good one.
so long as it's done well. badly done minimalist posters are pretty terrible.
personally i don't think the dagger is strong enough imagery to work. it needs to be instantly recognisable.
you had a good start with the mask, as that's probably the most visually strong element of the whole film, but you don't need to have all of the features, like the one D3TBS mocked up
Does anybody know the name of this font?

[editline]7th November 2011[/editline]
lol don't funny vote me. I have no clue.
the only thing that i'll say about your kill bill poster is that, nice as it is, i don't feel there's anything particularly original about it. to me it's just a cross between these two

so it's unsurprising that it looks good, certainly when related to the movie, because that's pretty much how the original art team had it planned anyway.

Minimalistic movie posters are the best, but they don't work for promotion for new movies. They're for after you have watched it. Posters you hang on your wall or shit. Well done minimalistic posters describes the very essence of what the movie is about and does it in a creative and exciting way.

Start by reading some guides on composition. Making the poster balanced. Read up on rules on 1/3 and the golden ration. Those are the things that make a poster look much better.
Then i suggest studying which colors go together best and which clash. There a tons of tutorials on colors and what they mean in design.
Afterwards you can start practicing with your tool of choice.
Since your not that experienced and from what i'm hearing here flash is more pleasant to use than illustrator and you get the same results, maybe try doing your work in flash to see what feels better. Put some time into your work making sure your curves are smooth, not jagged and details like that which really bring a poster together, not making it look half assed and messy.
Oh and no matter what, you'll get frustrated a lot when you're stil practicing. But It's well worth it when you finally make a piece and enjoy looking at it instead of having to make up excuses why it sort of work the way you made it because it was for a xyz cause.

Get rid of the black shading around the window and on the buttons.
The texture in the background needs to be smaller and more recognisable.
The colors in the background need to be more saturated yet lighter.
The buttons infront should Not be in a straight line. Arange them around the screen somehow. I don't hate that font necessarily but it needs a different color.
Top left and bottom right are my favourites.
Also do you think it would look good if you inverted the colors?
you know, that last idea might actually work. Make a vectorial of his mask and then get a pic of some fireworks and just clip them togheter or whatever its called. Kinda like what I do, except less.
Also, one of the things that I don't like in the posters above is the fact that the cheek is gray when the rest is black or white. I'd rather have them in the same color as the rest of the mask.

i just had a really retarded idea: in the end of the movie, there's fireworks.
would it be worth a shot making the guy fawkes mask into fireworks, and making the black there sky (add stars and shit)?
frankly, all you'd need is the cityscape and and make the V in fireworks (as that actually happened in the movie)
stars would be too visual for a minimalistic poster imo
thats a much better idea

Yes for a minimalistic poster that would be brilliant.
But he already said he's not really going for the real minimalistic poster.
Like more of a semi minimalistic thing.
It's not that hard to do fireworks anyway, find some tutorials to make sure it looks good and follows the shape properly.
And try out both. The face or the V. Both would be too much.
eeeeeee!
so you know that place i'm going to in march - may, honey creative (http://www.honey.co.uk/design/our-work). and then i got called up a few weeks ago because they were super busy so i went and did a few extra weeks with them, although they already had a placement student, and that went well. but it quietened down again so i'm back looking for new placements. anyway the lady who was sort of mostly supervising us has now left and gone to a new company, and she just left me a voicemail saying would i be interested in doing an internship at this new company she's at. she said if i was interested could i go in and see her, and also she was thinking i could do it from now until march (when i go to honey), so that sounds pretty positive!
my only (massive) fear is if they don't pay. even if they cover travel expenses and lunch it's gonna be tricky... but i'm trying not to get too far ahead of myself. i'm gonna phone her back tomorrow and hopefully this will go well!
