This is a website header I'm playing with and I may or may not actually put it to use depending on how nice looking I can get it. I'm having a really hard time with the color scheme so some help there would be really appreciated.
Also the title of the site would go in that splatter.
Can you give me a good reason for why you used the rising sun brush in that design?
Also, you should make the buildings follow the perspective rather than copy-pasting them and getting fucked up lines.
The windows are also wiggely in terms of width.

I guess I used the sun rays because it felt really empty without something else going on so I made that
I've only been doing this for maybe a month so I'm still pretty unsure as to what makes a good composition
And I'm aware of the wonkiness of the buildings and I was going to go back into Illustrator to get the perspective sorted out

I understand that feeling, but that is a good reason to remove it. If it doesn't have anything to do with what the site/company/whatever represents then it shouldn't be there. Keep every element related to what and who it's used for.
Maybe it would simply look better if you filled the whole thing with buildings throughout the whole width of it and just keep it black and white? It could work. If not keep it single-coloured or a very faint gradient that is almost invisible.

Graphic design shouldn't be about putting something in it because it's empty or because it looks good.
Everything should have a purpose.

I understand that but the thing is that this doesn't really have a specific purpose or theme other than to look kinda... artsy which I guess is kind of a theme. And after studying some other web headers just with that general purpose, they all seem to have the same thing going on where it's pretty random stuff thrown in yet goes together well in the composition which I guess is what I'm going for.
But I'm trying some other things regardless to see how it turns out.

Show us some of those examples where you think it's just random stuff put together to look pretty. Also link to the page since we need context with it.
My business teacher gave us an extra credit project to design an ad which supported a campaign to eat something other than turkey on thanksgiving.
I spent most of the period filling out my weekly stock report and then deciding what to do, eventually in the last 20-30 minutes of class I came up with this.
It was speedy work, I'm not looking for critique. I know I could have done a lot better. Using an ancient computer doesn't help either. I just thought it was funny to share.

thats pretty weird, but honestly I think that the regular cow pic with the word Turkey or Turkey For Thanksgiving, and some more words would do it
I don't get it.
Why wouldn't I eat a cow? And why wouldn't I eat a turkey because it's the new cow?
people usually eat turkey for thanksgiving, so you'd eat cow instead of turkey because cow is the new turkey and not cow?
A poster I made for the battle of the bands thing at my school, we're going to have the bands put their photos on there to promote themselves

I can't help but to think that it's a massive waste of ink. Any ink saving suggestions?
it's the same amount of ink regardless of colour (except white)
[editline]20th November 2011[/editline]
so the only way to reduce ink is make more of it white i guess?

surely a lighter but still coloured background uses less ink than a completely black one?

try going for a light "UI".
you know, like iTunes
ah yes, good idea.
surely a lighter but still coloured background uses less ink than a completely black one?
unless it's purely from one cartridge, it would still use a blend of all the different colours to make the colour, as light as it is, it would use the same amount of ink afaik

but won't it space out the clusters of colour to make it lighter?
The new design for the cars in 2012 just got finished. Just a rough dummy

way too busy and messy and its a clusterfuck i dont like it
[editline]20th November 2011[/editline]
everything seems to be placed randomly and without reason

It's supposed to be busy as fuck. I get your point, but nothing was placed random or without a reason. We had a 5 minute argument for each part of the design. The numbersticker is just illustrative though, it's not gonna be in the print, but that's where we need to put it.
nothing should be supposed to be busy, that's a very ass backwards way of thinking about it.

'i made this bad on purpose, but it's ok because it was my artistic intention'

How can you say "nothing is supposed to be" when it comes down to taste and likings? I'll gladly take critizism, but you're mostly just letting out bullshit like you're the guy with the answers. Try to widen your horizons some time.
Something being too busy has nothing to do with personal taste - it's a negative thing, and the fact that you like it shows a poor design skills and taste I guess? You made it busy on purpose > you like it because you made it
and I don't see how saying something is too busy and random looking is letting out bullshit, i think that's a fairly valid criticism
[editline]20th November 2011[/editline]
Rusty, these kinds of designs are supposed to be busy. I personally don't like that one much, it's too busy?
Ferosso, that's just Rusty. Don't get pissed, it's his way to be. Ignore the non-useful parts of what he says and you'll be okay.

Examples of how busy these can be. But somehow, yours looks like they're not connecting, and were just slapped on top of each other without thinking about the whole thing.
Yeah busy design exists, that doesn't mean it should
A solid colour and one or two logos would be infinitely more effective branding than cobbling all that stuff on there
[editline]20th November 2011[/editline]
"racing cars are supposed to be that way", says who? break the mold and make something visually appealing unlike all the other existing racing cars.
I see what you mean Rusty. Simplicity is often better IMO too, but I had to incorporate the following:
Colors:
Red, white, black, grey.
Details:
Camo rear end, checkered flag, rear side window has to be covered with something, red front end, red rims, chrome sticker on hood or front fender, company logo on side of car.
I'm not trying to be a smartass, but I can provide you with the PSD of the clean body if you'd like to give it a try. I won't be using it, but maybe it could widen my own horizons.
they're not at all good looking, i don't understand how anyone could say they are. they're professionally made, but they just don't look nice.
of course not everything has to be minimalistic but there is a certain point where it's way way too much
either way, the main difference between those images and his design is his feels very disconnected and all over the place, wheras those other ones have a flow
if you insist on keeping is messy, work on that.
I musnt' forget the camo roof. That was important too.
shit, automerge :C
are you saying those arent good looking? they are, even though theyre busy as fuck. its a style, not everytyhing has to be minimalistic
I'd like to have that just for fun
For those who wants to try, go ahead. Atleast it's fun to do :v:
http://www.spphoto.dk/upload/S15.zip
If I had to incorporate all those colours, I would make the car grey, the roof black, and add certain bits of red and white sparingly to the body, and have the main logo centered on the side or something. that would look so much nicer than every other race car on the track
[editline]20th November 2011[/editline]
I mean I get that they're all messy but it's something to consider, and I think a step in the right direction
The thing is the car is already white, so spending a thousdand dollars more on making the car grey isn't really worth it. And I can't fill the side of the door, cause that's where the numbersticker has to go, so it has to be free.
