I think he's talking about the backgrounds of the gamer pictures which would be that image in the top right which is just a gray to black gradient.
I was talking about the ones you get from gamer-pics. The ones you can download from the marketplace. those are the old-ish style xbox gamerpics.
i would still very much move away from that style, it's incredibly outdated (and was always pretty bad. i'm guilty of having gone through that phase too, as are a lot of people.) it won't be long until microsoft changes those too.
eh, you never know - the glossy icons aint that bad.
eh, you never know - the glossy icons aint that bad.
They're pretty fucking shit.
harsh
What is it that's shit now?
Gradients, glossy style icons, or HIS glossy icons?
the entire "gloss" look, as I've come to understand it. It's an old way of making something look fancy that has been overused and now looks really cheap and ugly.
the entire "gloss" look, as I've come to understand it. It's an old way of making something look fancy that has been overused and now looks really cheap and ugly.
Eh I think if it's done subtly it can compliment certain things very well. Not as often as some people think unfortunately.
i think simple one color stuff is the shit now. Like the Xbox one, or that Windows OS for the smartphone. They just play with simple shapes in 1 color with no extra effects or anything.
And also now I feel that cars with a matte paintjob look cooler than the ones with a glossy paintjob
Do you graphic designers usually charge hourly rates or by logo? Or does it just depend?
Do you graphic designers usually charge hourly rates or by logo? Or does it just depend?
I believe most just charge for the logo. The price of the logo is partially decided by the quality and effort needed.
Well, I'm not the best at logos, but I'm trying to make a logo for an internet radio show.

Actually I got rid of the cirlce.
Do you think this is better?

Of the bottom two, I think the first one has the emblem going too far down and it's kind of distracting. On the second one, I'm not a fan of just having a big black rectangle up there because it's even more distracting.
It's normal to have a big focus above the type, but in the second one, it's just blackness and when you use stacked text like it is in your logo it just makes it seem too "long" or something.
Given the choice I actually prefer the top one because your text seems to have a lot of focus and the circular form compliments that. However, I think you could do without a lot of the shapes scrunched inside.
I'm not one of the super experienced experts on here, but that's just how it comes off to me.
well what if I added the word Radio on the second one?
I was playing with what I had while I was waiting for critiques.

I'm going to check the circular thing

It's better than the other one I think, but it's still odd because the typography makes it seem like you want me to focus on the world "CURE" but then you also still have this huge black area above it.
It also seems like it's all a bit too tight as well.
well, fixed that then, and added the circle

I like this a lot more. But the lightning is really busy and distracting and I think his hair is just really odd, it's too geometric, try and make it's forms a bit more organic without losing the hard feel. As for the lightning... Lightning sparks instead? I dunno.
well it ended up like this

kind of a logo I guess

First commissioned sports logo (don't ask about the name, neither me or him chose it) he loved it:
(Criteria was to include: beaver, basketball, red, gold, Canadiana, two colours max)

I agree, great logo. Black ( or gray) and white version works well.
Only change I would possibly make would be to move 'Long Island' left to line-up with the C in computer.

I'm noticing most of your designs are just a couple of lines and barely any illustration. i suggest you try some more full bodied stuff.
I really like the concept dgg
I'm looking to make a logo/watermark for my photography on events, business cards and such.

Where can I get started? I have CS5

Can anyone give me some font suggestions for this?
It's for a social networking type deal.
I'm noticing most of your designs are just a couple of lines and barely any illustration. i suggest you try some more full bodied stuff.
That's because I really don't like detailed logos at all.
The more I've started to really look at other peoples logos, logo awards and all that the more I start to just dislike logos in general and full bodied logos really just turn me off. But there are of course always exceptions to the rule. But I do sketch out more detailed logo variations, but so far the only time I've gone for a more illustrated and less symbolic logo is with the "Kraft Tattoo" logo, the tribal arm.

Had the Long Island lined up at first, but it felt unbalanced because of the circle shape of the logo. But should I be chosen and the Contest Holder wants it then it may be moved back again. I can easily see how it can be slightly annoying for some people, that's usually the stuff that can tick me off, especially since there is no reference to how it is with and without that change.

Nothing springs to mind.
But check out these two sites and see if you find some fonts you like and/or think could fit. Social networking definitely got a bit rounded fonts, but they usually have this "friendly professional" feel to them where the font kinda balances the cartoon-friendly round edges and still keeps that straight industrial feel.

Alright here's a social networky type font I thought I'd try
Yes or no?
It's better in some ways, but I get a comic sans vibe from it. It also seems pressed down in the height.
But I tend to slap sans-serif fonts on everything so my advice on typography shouldn't be listened to too much. I would just recommend duplicating the text a lot and apply a lot of different fonts to it that you think may work and eliminate those you don't like based on how the others look. Find which one gives the expression you're after.
