It's better in some ways, but I get a comic sans vibe from it. It also seems pressed down in the height.
But I tend to slap sans-serif fonts on everything so my advice on typography shouldn't be listened to too much. I would just recommend duplicating the text a lot and apply a lot of different fonts to it that you think may work and eliminate those you don't like based on how the others look. Find which one gives the expression you're after.
Yeah it's like I know what I want, but I'm just struggling to find it at the moment.
Something in between what I have now and something more professional.

Exactly. Just scroll through the fonts you have and see if you find the best font that does the job you want.
On that note there is also the top 100 fonts periodic table.

it looks too horizontally stretched

in both images
I dont really get a social network feel. Feels more like some company that deals with something about care or insurance, or water. Just from the color and font overall
First commissioned sports logo (don't ask about the name, neither me or him chose it) he loved it:
(Criteria was to include: beaver, basketball, red, gold, Canadiana, two colours max)

Love it! Looks lovely.
A DJ logo commission (and album cover). I know it might not belong here among your things, but it sure as hell doesn't belong in Create Work That Doesn't Deserve A Thread.
in the end he wants me to include two versions. Looking over my many proposals on the vinyl and needle version my client stated that he doesn't "do vinyl" and suggested a turntable there instead, yet at the same time he really liked the vinyl version.
The needle was kinda fun to create. Easier than I thought using Photoshop.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/7XYoM.jpg[/t]
Over 100 layers of shapes and more (rasterized) shapes I also created a turntable. Jesus fuck I should really download Illustrator or whatever that vector-friendly program is called.

And while I'm at it I might as well dump some other stuff I've made.
This one's not a commission. Just a practice of composition and stuff. This model is my favorite, she's gorgeous and photo genetic.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/FlAtO.jpg[/t]
I posted it in Creative Work That Doesn't Deserve A Thread and got rated dumb, which is beyond my understanding but whatever.
(You'll enjoy it more if you click on the thumbnail.)
Another work of commission. I don't really like it at all since it's not completely finished. Looking over it I see a lot of stuff I would have changed before handing it to my client. Unfortunately the client refused to pay and thought it was "cool" for me to give it to him anyway. Fat chance.
Below: business card and flyer.

The flyer came with a fun variation of different hue settings - I'm sure you can imagine the different sets of colors yourself.

Does anyone else have experience with clients acting like total assholes? I'd love to hear them and maybe how to handle such a client, as well.
This is just so wrong.
Won 200 dollars for this design that I thought was, meh and doesn't really convey the business of Leader Education very well.
[t]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3655193/SD-Text.png[/t]
Was eliminated without a rating for this design that actually had a lot of symbolism and familiarity connected to it that fully explains the business.
[t]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3655193/Long-Island-Computer-Repairs.png[/t]
Nothing wrong with not winning, but not even a rating really surprised me. He's also only favouring initial logos:

People and their goddamn obsession with initials (and gloss).
But oh well, that's how competitions work.
Going to give it a new try by using the pill as I and power on symbol as a merge of C and R. It'll probably fail, but maybe not, worth giving a shot.
The last one's my favourite, but things like how the S and D come together is stuff I never think of myself, so that's always fascinating, too.
Just to clear things up: the SD-logo was the one entered in the competition and not the others?

Two different contests.
The SD logo is for Shockingly Different and I won 200 bucks for that.
The power button pill logo is my entry to the contest and it got eliminated.
The LICR logo is someone elses entry that the contest holder is currently favouring.
lmao thats pretty fucking terrible
It's the owner's option
Well the commission is done.

I'm not trying to make any symbols or anything, I just like text designs. I see people critic on the more simplistic things.
Disregard the background, I just needed contrast.

Edit: Anyone suggest a new color to replace the black? I just want a monotone-ish color.
Edit2: I don't know, better or worse? I don't do that much graphic design.

I liek the second background better!
I feel like this would be the best place to ask.
I went to a local community college for Graphic Design, but unfortunately the teacher was really good at printing (Running presses, and things like that) but was kind of winging it with everything else.
So, while i learned a bit, i didn't learn a whole lot more than what i went in with. So i was wondering if you all could recommend some blogs, books, anything helpful really to help me teach myself the more fundamental parts of graphic design. We didn't really cover typography at all, and we only briefly touched on Illustrator. I know i can find illustrator help online pretty easily, but as far as things like logo design, illustration, and things like that go, i'm wondering what books or blogs you guys use to help you improve your work. Text books from college or high school classes that you really thought were helpful and took would be appreciated too.
Thanks guys.
I think you should do illustrations and stuff for anything you can think of and then at the end critique yourself on what you should improve and so on. I didn't learn typography formally, but I kinda learned some things just by looking at ads and stuff around me
Best tip.
People think I'm retarded because whenever I'm hanging out I'm always looking at logos, flyers and stuff. It really helps both by giving inspiration and showing you how you should do your stuff.
Unrelated: I tried to get into 2D Imaging at uni, but it was full for people doing other courses than gd. :(
I might - *might* - try to just do Graphic Design next year, instead of my current Psychology major. I really like gd, and it's what I'd like to work with. Sadly, I've already done 2 full years of Psychology, and I'm scared of starting something else :(
Yeah, I look at a ton of posters, logos and so on in the city on my way to school and back and whenever waiting.
Criticizing everything and trying to figure out what it is. Do I think it is good or not? What makes it work? Why is it bad? Is the font good? Does it fit with the message? Etc etc.
Also your psychology education will be immensely helpful with your graphic design career, so if anything you should be more confident in changing to GD instead of being afraid of it. Graphic design is pretty much psychology applied to an image, symbol or figure.
My inspiration is love.
No seriously though, I can't put myself in the GD pocket like you guys. But these guys more or less covered a big part of what fuels you so you can grow. Analyzing is a big part of it, and getting into the media is also always good for you. Places like Deviantart is good for tracking artists you like and may be relevant to your interest career-wise.
Things like how the S and D come together is stuff I never think of myself, so that's always fascinating, too.
That's because it's not generally something you just think of by looking at it. It's something you progressively sketch out. If there is two words for Graphic Design that describes how to do it, then it's sketching and research.

If I ever get a commission where a logo design is needed, this will come in handy knowing it.

that's a penis
You seen those threadless + GAP shirts? I had one of my designs picked, the only one I had in threadless at the time they picked (Last August), and they released a few days ago. I don't know how I should feel. On one hand my design wasn't that great or innovative. Oh the other hand, the other designs are just the same old threadless bullshit.

I'm in love with this thick font.
im not
[editline]11th March 2012[/editline]
took me 10 seconds to figure out what it says, and only then because i saw it had a suit inside it
ok good for you :)
i dunno man ur the one whos never even done any ideation sketches
???
Yeah no I realized the font wasn't clear enough, I just posted for the heck of it.

Would you feel better if I posted this?
i still dont like either fonts at all, the image inside 'suit' looks very sloppy and bad, and the text alignment is very messy. on the left side it kind of triangles upward but it's all lop sided. it should all be aligned
although i just dont like anything about it, maybe its time to go back to the drawing board and do some sketches??
its so unclear it looks like it says shit
haha yeah it does look a bit like shit if i saw that on the street i would intentionally call it the shit algorithm
Yeah I know what you mean, to be honest I only wanted to try and fill the big font with various pictures. The rest was just playing around. I mean it's not like a big project or anything, just wanted to test some things out with the big font.
I know it's awful, like I said I just posted for the heck of it. Kinda wanted to say how I like the big font. That's all.
[editline]10th March 2012[/editline]
also those smaller fonts are awkward enough, I just wanted a just as edgy font beside it.
