Will it stay a vector?
No. Vector formats are .SVG and .EPS. (use SVG for net usage and EPS for business things, like printing and storage)
So just do what he said but choose SVG instead.
Also why is there a fuckton of points on your S and why is it so bulgy and uneven? I get that a lot of it is probably from making it with the pathfinder rather than drawing it, but you should clean it up unless there is a reason for all that roundness and organic forms that seems out of place on such a strictly geometrically shaped S.
Actually I never used .SVG or .EPS. What's so different, any advantages and stuff?

I believe EPS is like the TIFF of vector.
Just keeps more information about layers and shit.
Also SVG just means that it's a viewable vector. So you can scale it as you please with HTML and people can zoom in on your site and it will always be crisp and clear.
It does however mean that they can steal your shit and use it for themselves for all sorts of copyright breaching things, since they can now easily get the exact thing in whatever size and resolution they want. Which is typically why people just save their vector images as images, since it's easier in every way.

I drew it in Photoshop, and "Traced" it in Illustrator, and yes the roundness is on purpose, I have never created a vector before.
I have saved it as an SVG and it worked but, I need it as an EPS because I will be frequently using it in other designs.

Or, you know. Illustrator File. .ai (like .psd for Photoshop)

Unfortunately this brings me back to the original problem.
I'm going to leave it for tonight, and find out on my own, don't want to clog the thread up.
Thanks for the help so far.

How the hell?
The background is always transparent. Put something behind it (move it down in the layers panel or make a new layer underneath it)
The background is transparent by default unless you put a fill there. If you need editing capability, the most obvious thing to do is save it an a .ai because that's an illustrator file (like psd is to photoshop). If you need it as an image, save it as a png. As long as there is nothing behind your design, the background will be transparent. If you need it to remain a vector without saving it as an AI file, save it as an SVG. I don't understand why these options do not work for you... why does it need to be an EPS? You're saying that but I'm not understanding why. Anything else I've said works just fine for using it for other things.
I didn't fill the background in, I loaded up a single layer with the transparent background and my "S". I then did a live trace I think it's called. Am I missing something to actually create a vector from the shape?
I guess I want to use EPS because every time I've had to work with vectors it has been with EPS, so it's the only thing I am familiar with, and I imagine it's widely used so if I need to send it around (for t-shirts etc) people will be able to use it off the bat.

The background isn't filled in. Like Rusty said the background is ALWAYS transparent in Illustrator.
You use AI to actually edit it. You use EPS to send it to someone to print it for you.
the background looks filled in to me from what he posted, theres a white square around the s?
also just give up on the EPS thing, there's absolutely no reason to do that. i've never even heard of it, and nobody here recommends using it, i doubt it's widely used
Also just give up on the EPS thing, there's absolutely no reason to do that. i've never even heard of it, and nobody here recommends using it, i doubt it's widely used
Uh, it's a widely used professional standard.
To put it simply:
AI - Your own personal copy of the file ensuring that you are the owner and have full editing possibilities.
EPS - The file you send to companies for business related things like printing.
SVG - The file you use to have a scalable vector on the web.
the background looks filled in to me from what he posted, theres a white square around the s?
Well since he said he used Live Trace it probably is actually.
You need to remove the white around the S manually, whatthe. Live trace traces everything, including the white around the S.
Okay well he still doesn't need EPS during the editing stage - only as a final product for printing.
I had a (probably terrible) idea for an army propaganda poster, something like "YOLO, Fight For What's Right!" something that would draw young people to the army, loads of the guys at my school walk around doing stupid stuff and saying yolo. I had an idea of what it would look like last night before I went to sleep but it's been 24 hours since then, only remembered that little detail.
the only comment i can add to this guy is this:
don't use live trace
Would I be able to send it to someone, because I am still completely stuck. The only reward I can offer is a noice rating :tinfoil:
you said that you live traced it? what that does is fill in the whole document, so theres actually an object of the white background. you need to expand your live trace, and then select and delete the background. cant remember where the expand button is but its not far from the live trace button.
(i havent read everything you guys have been talking about but it sounds like you're trying to save it but you cant get transparency as a png or whatever)
I think I should just make a video explaining what he needs to do.
Been working on some Pixar Posters:

Whilst I like what you've done quality wise I don't really feel they give any meaning. They don't really tell anything about the movies other than what's completely obvious.

I think the Toy Story 3 one is the best idea, if it was the actual characters and not silhouettes but I get that it's kinda hard to execute. The bug's life execution was fine but the font doesn't really benefit from the drop shadow.
Just wanting to see what everyone would say about this, as I would consider this graphic design.
I've always had an interest in highways, so I decided to start up Inkscape and make some signs to exact specification. I just did this as a curiosity, but I might use these skills to make a map or something.

everything about the toy story 1 one looks really good except for the characters which are just plain weird imo, they don't fit in it all.
Hi guys, newbie here. Been lurking this thread since like the day it was made, only decided to post now because I'm working on something and hit an artistic funk. I just got the Media Producer position for my school's student council and my first task was to make a logo/header for the council; I have to integrate the school's mascot (Green Archers), the school's colors (green, gold, and white), the school emblem (the star) and the motto of the school. My problem is that it's kind of hard to put all of these without it all being too clustered and busy, any ideas?
Here's a rough draft of what I'm imagining, much of it is tentative (especially the text and flair) and I could really use some help on this one. I'm especially lost in what to put on the background. Am I going on the right track? I've asked for feedback from the other members of the council but they're not really helping much. Help would be much appreciated!

EDIT: I find niggaupload a suitable alternative to imgur.com !

Here is what I would do. Make a logo for the council utilizing the archer / star. Then make a header using the simple logo and then put the other text on the header nice and cleanly rather than trying to incorporate all of the information into the logo, because it WILL be cluttered then.

I like what is going on for the most part, though I agree with dgg. In my personal opinion, these posters do not need a folded paper overlay, clean vector graphics should be clean.

Hm, I don't know man. They add a nice feel to the posters, the texture is homely and warm imo
also textures are a pretty large graphic design trend for 2012 if that makes a difference

I think you need to rethink the first one quite a bit. The poster in general kind of gives off a vintage feel which the two characters completely contradict.
