Hm, I don't know man. They add a nice feel to the posters, the texture is homely and warm imo
also textures are a pretty large graphic design trend for 2012 if that makes a difference
K, well as a preview image it is okay, but I don't think fake paper texture makes much sense for those if they are actually being printed.
Trends are annoying and limiting and sometimes you find something looks so much better without it.

Yeah absolutely, but if it looks good to the target audience then why not?
You're right, it would be cool to see versions without the crease overlay, they'll look as good/even better with less going on.

I follow trends a lot too, and I hope I don't sound like angry or condescending in my previous comments, I just know from personal experience that something designed outside of the current trends might look weird at first, but it stands out from the crowd and it will grow on you as you look at it more.
I really appreciate the feedback guys, thanks a lot. [img]http://www.facepunch.com/fp/ratings/heart.png[/img]

It is nice when someone posts something good enough that you feel you can actually start to critique it, I enjoyed seeing your posters.

Yeah man I like to stay away from trends too - but funnily enough, minimalism is quite big, which is what Kabookie would be swaying towards without the creases.
But literally fuck 'trends' because A) i fucking hate that term, and B) as long as it looks good then why confine your options by categorizing what makes it what it is?

Yo, feedback costs One Hundred Pounds!
it's all good man, you should submit a clean version for fairer C&C :)
[editline]30th April 2012[/editline]
By the way, what's the typeface you used for the Toystory posters?
Minimalism isn't the trend (but it sure as hell is a trend), he meant the whole paper overlay shit.
Texture overlay is such a cheap way of making shit, bland or boring things look "super cool" without it really being good at all. The texture is just making it look cool, like a really nice plastic bag with a severed head inside.

haha more like a really beautiful head with a crinkled paper bag over it

I kind of have to agree with this. The only one that I think really has a strong concept without the overlay would be the last one where the characters make up the "3"
I like that one but the other ones would not really stand out if it wasn't for the overlay.
[editline]30th April 2012[/editline]
To me I think the biggest issue with the first two Toy Story ones is that it looks like you're going for a "hand made" cutout look but because of the perfection in the shapes, it still looks very computer-generated.

Please give me some feedback, I'm not even close to being satisfied with how it looks right now:

I like the designs, except the dark one (I don't know why). Also, try to stick to a more limited color scheme. There are way too many different shades of blue (logo, tweet submit button, highlighted/selected top icon, retweet indicator). I also don't like the red and blue shaded tweets, but I don't really know why.
Other than that it looks really promising.
Hey guys.
So in my graphics lesson, we got assigned the task of designing a greetings card. I chose to do a birthday card and I wondered what everyone though of my current design.

The red notification icons don't really work for me, maybe you could put them in a more subtle box with a hint of red to show their importance.

Just drop the gradient at the text input bar. It looks hideous on the dark one. At least make them fade into the background like on the lightest one if you're going to do it. Otherwise leave it clean or cut it off clean some 5 pixels over the text input.
The post functions (star, reply, etc, etc) are too visible in the dark one and too invisible in the middle one.
What is the highlights colours for? Why red and blue? It also only works on the brightest one, on the others it's toned down, unclear and ugly.
Why is the notification icons that kind of red? Why do they have gradients? They really don't contrast well to the grey and just bothers me, because it's like they are trying to blend in, but they don't.
Same with the blue and yellow post icons. They just come out of nowhere, they are better in terms of visibility, but they don't really seem to belong. Try to bring more focus to the icons and less to the box they're in maybe? Drop the dark border for example?
The top bar icons works, but I don't like how they aren't aligned with the posts. Home button isn't aligned with the profile icons at all, which really annoys me.
Looking better? Feedback appreciated as always :3
Much better.
The highlight colour fills the whole post which is very good, and the text input has a clean cut (though I notice a 1px line on the left side there, any way you could remove that? Maybe the whole cut works better without a line?)
I didn't notice it before now, but you've doubled up with border lines, it's like. The whole program has a border, and then everything inside it has an extra border, it gives a pretty annoying faux-3D effect which really only annoys when noticed and makes everything seem layered rather than being one piece.
So mouseover and selected is switched... Does that mean the blue shiny button is... mouseover? Why is the one with the most visual contrast and indication mouseover? It would work way better as selected, just make it carve in like it does on the mail symbol there.
The supposedly selected one... Why does it have blue shine? It makes no sense, completely out of place. Make it carve out like the house and leave it at that, I think that would work well.
I like the way you changed the notification numbers and made the star and recycle symbols just symbols rather than colorful triangles, keeps it in style.
I like the addition of the X in the upper right corner, fills in some space and adds the quite obviously needed button. Makes me long for the top-icons to be aligned even more though.
if the icons were slightly smaller and aligned to the left or something i'd think it'd look nice
also no offense i think the the typography for that "beeko" logo sucks, but that could be just me being very nitpick-y when it comes to using humanist fonts in logos
[editline]2nd May 2012[/editline]
the exit button should also have some more significance, invert it and put it in a box or something.
idk it needs to look more noticeable in a passive state
[editline]2nd May 2012[/editline]
you also need to display the character count somewhere plus you could also have the send tweet button grayed out and transparent when nothing is in it.
or alternatively you could do something like this

and when you click it it already selects the textbox and all you have to do is type
[editline]2nd May 2012[/editline]
and you know, as for typography in the logo:
there's no distinction. many logos have plain and simple typography separate from the symbolage but it doesn't fit. it lacks enough distinction as it is and it feels like you just kind of typed it out there without really thinking about how to fit it.
plus it's a humanist font, i tend to really hate humanist fonts when they're not being used in interface purposes - maybe it's one to many times i've read a paper with calibri, but i still kind of hate them. there's some good examples of them being used nicely in logos but i mostly think they're overused - they lack the attractive styles of other sans serifs.
kind of a dumb and not that well-thought out example, but here, i made a mockup

maybe think about integrating it within the logo somehow? it's fine if you decide not to, i would just try some other fonts out
How's this for a logo?

Or maybe without all the fancy effects...

no fancy effects, work on the kerning, talk later
sometimes i wonder how people fuck up kerning - hell the default kerning looks perfect as it is, how do you get it so that each letter looks like it has drastically different kerning????

im not saying i dont know how, i know how. i mean like, why.

That's not how it works.
The normal kerning is set by the font, not the program you're using.
Some letters are more or less perfectly kerned together, whilst others doesn't work for shit, because hey, every letter combination works differently together.

totally addicted to 99designs.com at the moment.

Is anyone here familiar with blurb.com or any other similar online book publishing facility?
Hey Facepunch, I am not very good a graphic design and need a bit of help. I am designing a T-shirt for my Universities Frosh week and the theme for the specific shirt I am making is Alice in Wonderland. The Base color of the shirt is going to be neon orange, and we can only use two colors for the print. Here is what I got so far. Do you have any tips or suggestions on what to do? Anything better that can be done with the Alice in Wonderland theme? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The text seems have gotten a bit lost in the tree, you could try one in which the tree doesnt have that white outline, or have the text below the tree
anythingy really, to make them more distinct
I'm working on a new logo for my YouTube channel, ReallyHandsomePeople
How does it look?

Either make the reflection really visible or just keep it white.
Other than that it works. Nothing special, but it gets the point across.
Fontwise I find the font a bit well round and comicy, but then again as you know I'm a diehard sans-serif industrial/geometrical lover.
ive already heard so many names like that
