With the Pen Tool the trick is to try and make anything you're drawing over with as few clicks as possible. The more points you make, the worse it will look, and the harder it will be to correct at a later time. More points = more jagged, wobbly, uneven, fucked up. Less points = more rounded, controlled, smooth, great. Never have more points than you need.
Yeah I always put off working with the pen tool. I'll try and explain this, so bare with me; Is there any way (key i can hold down?) to make it so after making a curved line, it will act like the second point is the first point? On second thought, I'll do it with pictures; So I start to trace the image [t]http://content.screencast.com/users/Ohfoohy/folders/Jing/media/8ca4865c-a5f7-480d-912c-e1a2c1452c13/2012-08-31_2342.png[/t] then I get to this point and it bends and shit [t]http://content.screencast.com/users/Ohfoohy/folders/Jing/media/791c5219-0628-42d9-9233-21e90c23b079/2012-08-31_2348.png[/t] Now I know I could drag the arm thing of the previous anchor point inwards towards the point, but that's time consuming. Does that make sense? like before making the next curve, alt+click on the previous anchor.
I don't know if it's the same as in Photoshop, but in Photoshop, when you click on the anchor while holding alt, it doesn't affect the next curve in terms of bending. But you can hold down mouse-1 while making the next anchor and drag to create your own curve, instead of having one automatically be made. I feel like that was a poor explanation.
Forgot to thanks everyone for the feedback on my TLG logo. So thanks! Got some good stuff I'll post everything when it's all done and printed.
Made this poster for my dorm at college. I love it. It's based off the lyrics of this song, in case you didn't get that.
So to any of you out there who do graphic/web design as a career, how is the job market? I've heard both good and bad things from people about getting into graphic design and I want to know how secure it is as a career.
generally speaking it's pretty oversubscribed (i.e. more people than jobs) but if you have the skills and the right attitude, you shouldn't really struggle to find a job. but what kind of job it is (graphic design can be brooooad) and what exactly it is you end up doing can be more difficult to determine. i've just spent the year in london working for a couple of design agencies and when speaking to them about job prospects for a majority of graduates, that was the general response; a good attitude and reasonable skill will get you far. for someone in my position (who has taken a year out to work in industry, gaining experience, skill and - most valuably - contacts) it shouldn't be difficult to find a job, but if you've not been fortunate to gain such experience or contacts it can be a lot more difficult to get your first foot onto the ladder. either your portfolio will be lacking, or you could have a great portfolio but lack any contacts. and if you don't have the right attitude then you're unlikely to get too far anyway... but, there are tons of 'design' jobs out there. your skill and attitude will determine where you end up; it might be as part of an in-house design team for a big (or small) brand, or it might be creative director of a global branding consultancy. there will always be jobs, but whether it's the right job for you is a totally different question. when people ask our tutors about this, one always reminds us that "the cream will always rise to the top" one thing i will say is if you're considering design for any reason other than you enjoy it, it's probably not worth it. starting pay isn't great, it's very competitive and you may well have to work several mediocre years before finding your actual dream job. there are plenty of benefits, but also plenty of cons (as i'm sure there are in every career). for me, it's a fair pay off, but it might not be for everyone
(graphic design can be brooooad) and what exactly it is you end up doing can be more difficult to determine.
Not only this, but also, graphic design allows you to expand into many different areas. you can work in from Marketing to Journalism, and everything in between, and the job market really depends on where you are. In my own experience, Panama is lacking lots of graphic designers, and those you find, often do a very half-assed job (terrible arts and design schools) so if you can get a notch above the average kind of designer (say, you know about marketing, you know how to take photos, how to write small articles, in other words, have many different little skills) + you put lots of dedication to your work you can always find job.

People don't post enough work in here anymore, Anyways, here is my portfolio / potential business site that I'm working on when I get time. There is a lot that needs to be done yet, so many links don't do anything yet. In terms of the architecture portfolio that is advertised, I hope to put my print portfolio from my last year in school online, but it hasn't happened yet. Anyways, WIP: http://www.kenoncreative.com Yes, you will notice a ton of work that I have posted on the site is work that I have done for people on facepunch. Just the way stuff has worked, and I've lost a bunch of files from projects in the past that I would have put up.
when i get a chance i'll upload buncha my stuff i've done through my first two years of school so far.

Let's add a little life back to this thread shall we? I worked on this for my university :D [thumb]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/25318683/wellness.jpg[/thumb]
Pretty good though the quality of the brain vector is a negative.
Pretty good though the quality of the brain vector is a negative.
aah yes. It's not a vector. I had to work on this real quick so I just took an image from the internet and plastered it all over the poster. If I'd had more time I would have probably made the brain myself
How can I improve on my illustration? (CLICK TO VIEW FULL SIZE) [IMG_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/gI1uC.jpg[/IMG_thumb]
Remove the dots from the outlines.
I don't like the gradient on the text. I think it makes it look a little cheesy.
Working on some comps for a Typography project using a quote. Could use some feedback.
i do not like those, it has no flow
I'm not really sure what you mean. My main goal here is to basically unify the text so that it reads well but is interesting and so far I've gotten good feedback in that area. Do you have any actual suggestions?
Less font variatons. You've got bold, italic, light, sans-serif and slab all over the place. A general thumb of rule is to use 2-3 fonts on one page / visible area. That includes different weights, italics and so forth, not just different fonts as a whole. On your ROAR poster you've got 6 variations going on in terms of thickness, in terms of size there are 5 variations. That's a shitload of stuff on one design which makes it very busy, cluttered, unpleasant and unsynchronized.
Less font variatons. You've got bold, italic, light, sans-serif, slab and serif all over the place.
You're right that I should vary the weights less with the simpler words. However each one is entirely the same font so I'm not mixing sans with serifs or anything like that.
You're right that I should vary the weights less with the simpler words. However, you have way too many contrasts going on with thickness and size. When did you ever WHISPER LIKE THIS.
