I'm not the biggest car person in the world. What's considered high millage for a used car and how adversely does it effect the price? Because I'm curious why two Tacoma trucks from the early 2000's are exactly the same but one is 9k with 170,000 miles and the other is 15k with 100,000 miles and the 15k one has serious frame rust whereas the 9k one has a replaced frame that's brand new. Like is that extra 70,000 miles that big a factor? My Taco had 140,000 miles on it and it ran fine, minus the transmission and frame but both those were my Fathers doing and not natural wear and tear.
eh...I'd stay away from both of those. Frame rust is a very serious issue, aand I'm really not too sure about how I feel about a "replaced frame" As far as mileage, it's more about how much further the car can go. Go on forums and see how many miles guys are getting out of their Tacomas. If it's common place that they're getting 250k+ than you should be okay with buying one with over 150k miles. But otherwise you want as few miles as possible. Generally speaking, high mileage = high wear. [editline]30th August 2013[/editline] Do you have a mechanic friend or someone who knows alot about cars that can come with you when you look?
Id say it depends if the 9k tacos frame was Toyota replaced, in which case I'd say that one because like Felix said the frame rust is a big deal, whereas with a high mileage motor you can replace shit from your old Taco.
[QUOTE=felix the cat;42019806]eh...I'd stay away from both of those. [editline]30th August 2013[/editline] Do you have a mechanic friend or someone who knows alot about cars that can come with you when you look?[/QUOTE] Well, with the Toyota's it's a long story regarding frame rust and replaced frames. The 01-04 Tacoma's had frames made in Mexico and were shit, they rusted in half so there was a recall and Toyota replaced them free of charge along with shocks, exhaust and so on so that's all brand new. That's the case with the 170k miles one. The Toyota that's got only 100k miles has a rusted frame, not replaced or coated and they want considerably more just because the millage is lower even though the frame is liable to crack one day. Which is why I was wondering how much millage effected vehicle cost and so forth. I know people on TacomaWorld.com and CustomTaco that have Toyota's upwards of 300k/400k miles and they're still running, but that's partially because the people driving them maintain them mechanically themselves and to be fair they're pretty shitty condition as of now. Ideally I would get a completely different vehicle but [i]I love Toyota Tacoma's from 01-04[/i] nor do I have the funds to buy anything not used or 12 years old at this point with 4WD. [editline]30th August 2013[/editline] So for some context: 170,000 Miles. $9,000 with a replaced frame. Same exact vehicle as the one below. [t]http://i.ebayimg.com/00/$(KGrHqFHJFIFILuBIKwoBSC9hnL9sw~~_4.JPG[/t] 100,000 Miles. $15,000 with stock frame. "Surface Rust" Same exact vehicle as above. [t] http://filesmelt.com/dl/IMG-20130823-00112.jpg[/t] So, as far as I can tell the one with the replaced frame is a better deal since they're identical in model and condition (Rust not withstanding) The only major difference is the millage and I was wondering if 70k miles was really worth the six thousand extra bucks and a rusty frame? Like, since I'm kinda dense with cars I didn't know if 200k miles on a car is like a Mummy's curse or something and it will explode on me or something because whenever I mention the car to my family or friends they go "Eehhh that's a lota miles" like it's an untouchable.
The basic question is, are the inevitable parts replacements you're going to need to make worth more than the $6,000 difference? I'd look into maintenance reports on those trucks, if they're built tough and have long life on their components then I'd take the more used one.

The exhaust on my Taco broke and that was a 2k repair with labor. But, to be fair that was due to the severe rust issues I had from my Dad not answering the recalls prior to me getting it. As were about 90% of the problems with it, from rust and my Dad being a fuckwit.
200k miles is usually when its time to switch cars. Some cars are built for more then 200k miles, but its always standard that engines aren't really supposed to run for that much longer. You just have to figure out if you'll have the money to shell out when the truck inevitably shits out
for 15k, you could do a LOT better.
My yota is at 267k and is 25 years old. Pretty sure Toyota trucks can do 250k easily.
