So they're allowing me to be liberal with my dress code at work. At this point I can wear a big "SECURITY" watch cap which, surprisingly helps my job in a number of ways, mostly people don't go "Are you a manager?" all the time and when they ask me questions about the resolution of TV's or if/if an item comes with X cable or Y accessory they don't get mad at me when I don't know because they see right away I'm a security guard because the hat spells it out to them. The most obvious effect is if someone is acting suspicious, is about to open packaging, has stolen product or I approach them they get all nervous because they see me there. Before I was just some guy in a different color shirt that to them had no meaning.
And a couple of ladies have noticed me too, I think it's some weird authority attraction or something.
So my next purchase was a pair of Condor Tactical Pants in black. Typically they only allow us to wear slacks or something but my associate wears her old BDU's so I'm getting a set of these since they're cheap. My entire job is based around deterrence of theft so having a more intimidating presence is what I'm going for at this point. I wanted 5.11's but Condor's were cheaper and look more comfortable/practical.
I wish I hadn't lost my energizer tactical light, that would have come in handy for some of this shit. I also need to find some sort of small utility knife I can clip into a pocket because there is a limit on size so I can't bring my Spyderco, but I really need something for opening shit, cutting barcodes off stolen product etc.

If you like the spyderco, they make some tiny knives like the lady bug.
My uncle just gave me a huge lot of vintage car models from the 70's and 80's to sell on ebay. He's having hard times and could use the money, so if you think you might be interested, send me a PM. Just letting you know though, he isnt very willing to bargain and wants to get as much as he can out of these. Heres a picture of the stack though. most of them are unopened or sealed in the box.

Is he only selling it as a lot? Because I might be interested in buying some individual sets.
no, hes selling them all individually
Alright, could you check to see if there's any sort of classic Dodge or Ford stuff, like late 60s or early 70s.

Hmm, any of the later years? They might not be labeled as Stingrays.
I can't check right now, but there's tons of ford stuff. I'll take pictures and check for later stingrays when I get home from my grandma's house

Well, Elysium is without a doubt the dumbest movie I've seen this year.
Pray tell why?
I rather enjoyed all of the CGI and the story was decent enough.
Pray tell why?
They took an interesting story idea, then presented it in a dull and predictable plot, with characters as deep as cardboard (She's caring and loving towards her daughter! He's desperate to survive, but is really a good guy at heart! The bad guy is brutal and merciless, and creepily sexual too!), with all the visual creativity of shoving the robots from the Total Recall remake (actually the first fifteen minutes is pretty damn close to that movie) into the scenery of District 9 (but in Spanish, because depicting modern America as a slum would be difficult so we just made them all Mexicans), an extraordinarily hammy moral schism (is there even ONE redeeming feature about ANY of the Elysium-dwellers? and of course they'd make all the rich, snobby people speak French) that beats the viewer over the head with its smarmy preaching, boring cinematography that manages to make interesting action sequences feel like hollow echoes of better films, and to top it all off an ending that makes absolutely no goddamn sense.
The CGI was great and was by far the best part of the film. Utterly forgettable in every other respect.
MERRY CHRISTMAS

That reminds me, I was digging through some old stuff and I found a Revell model kit my grandpa gave me some years ago of the USS Forrestal. I figured it'd be worth something but probably better off being built than sitting in a box. It says from 1989 on the box so I didn't know how much it was worth, but I did a quick search on Google and the same kit is on Amazon for about $400. http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0032VWZPC/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new
So I'll sell you this kit for $390. It's the best I can do.
But really, I don't know how long (because it might be a while) but maybe if you're interested I can get it back out sometime and send it your way. I know you'd probably appreciate it a lot more than I would. I have some other smaller model kits and paint and stuff but I never really got into the hobby. I only ever built a VW Beetle with my grandpa when I was younger.
The other smaller model kits I have are a Sd.Kfz 7 German Half Track, '66 Malibu SS, and a Shelby Series 1. I'll be the business competing with Wulf's uncle :v:

Couldn't disagree with you more. I thought it was absolutely fantastic, the characters felt exactly as deep as they needed to be. I don't think it was ever supposed to be some ~artsy deep intellectual~ movie, I thought it was supposed to be a hard-scifi action movie. Because there's alot of fucking action.
Not every movie needs to have massive character development. I can agree with the the Elysium people being all very generic and haughty but you hardly ever fucking see more than like 3 of them actually talk. And yes, French has historically been the language of the upper class. Look at Britain following the Norman Conquests, guess what language the new, rich and intelligent upper class spoke over the bumbing Englishmen? French. I simply don't agree with you on the "boring cinematography", that's an opinion, I thought it was all fine. Lastly, the ending made fine sense. [sp]The entire station was controlled by computer, and considering the only authorities with any ability to quickly reset the system following Spider's takeover were already being detained by the robot guards there wasn't much they could do. Remember, the command center got blown to shit, and there were most definitely many more robots than there were human security.[/sp]
In summary, it's an action movie and you're mistaking it for some kind of philosophy film.
*pictures*
How much does he want for one? I'd like the Shelby GT-350.
Yeah French has been the official language of legal and aristocratic matters throughout history. I honestly thought Elysium was drawing parallels to the age of royalty with that.

Why on earth [sp]do they just have shuttles full of medical beds, when it's made clear early on that Elysium-dwellers generally don't go to Earth for any reason? Why are they keeping this technology just sitting around when they have the capacity to heal people on Earth and no doubt exploit them for profit (indentured labor ahoy!)? What kind of idiot sets up a system where any greedy shareholder could establish themselves dictator overnight by effectively scrawling 'LOL IM PRESDENT NOW' in the law? How is a very limited number of shuttles that most people will never get access to, or worse, will fight over and control, a happy ending to solve their ills? And the whole RICH PEOPLE ARE EVIL AND CAN FIX SOCIETY IF THEY JUST DECIDE TO BE GOOD moral (combined with a Christ-allegory with Max) lacks any subtlety or even depth whatsoever.[/sp]
Yes, I am aware that French is the language of the aristocracy. It's an example of the dull world-building of the film. The poor people live in favelas styled after Mexican slums and speak Spanish. The rich people drink champagne at pool parties and speak French. Films like Blade Runner have shown the same wealth/social disparity with a little more depth and complexity than reducing both extremes to outright caricatures. Even the remake of Total Recall presented the same basic setup (physical separation as an allegory for social separation) in a better manner.
I suggest you take a look at this and/or this because they articulate it better than I can.
In summary, it's an action movie and you're mistaking it for some kind of philosophy film.
Die Hard had a compelling villain and tight pacing. Aliens had great cinematography and style. The Matrix had deeper philosophical themes than its surface-level violence. The Terminator films (well, the first two) ooze style and have great performances from the actors. I'm not expecting Citizen Kane but plenty of action movies have had more than just special effects. It was worth watching for the guns and CGI but I have no desire to see it again.
It's a shame because I really, really enjoyed District 9, but in many ways Elysium felt like a simplified and shallower version of District 9, going even further in substituting are-you-getting-it-yet preaching instead of allegorical depth. District 9 presents the absurdity and cruelty of apartheid politics by using aliens as a stand-in for Africans, and employing their unfamiliarity and alien-ness to depict apartheid from the Afrikaner perspective and then humanize them. It's not subtle, but there's some depth there and it's an interesting theme. Elysium took the same basic idea, but then made it a step simpler, as if the allegory in D9 wasn't obvious enough. It's about healthcare and wealth disparity, depicted through caricatured healthcare and wealth disparity cranked up to hyperbolic extremes. It's like Blomkamp saw Starship Troopers' depiction of the military or Robocop's depiction of 80s corporatism, but missed the memo where both of those films were meant to be tongue-in-cheek satire and not literal representations of the systems they depict.
speaking of which haha

honestly, with the way i work, i won't go out of my way to read about how i shouldn't like a movie that i do, so sorry. it's farrrrrrrr from my favorite film, if it makes you feel better, and i have a different moty now, but i still really liked it.
I was really, really excited for Elysium.
Didn't like it. I love Neil but that movie was... bad.
Over the top sword-fighting electric ninja. The South African guy reminded me of D9 the entire time. Ridiculous "rich are evil" thing going on. The dumb ending where "oh, we had the capacity to save the world this entire time. We just.. didn't."
Merry Christmas to all of y'all IFAP
