The reason I don't recommend college is because a majority of people are like taepo and have no idea what they are going to school for or what they want and all they do is put themselves in debit.
All my friends gave me shit for not going to college but than they both dropped out because they realized they hated the field they choose to study in and were literally burning money on something they had no interest in and they only went to school because their parents made them and they were desperate to get out of the house.
The difference here is at least I enjoy what I'm studying. I'm thinking if I get my grades up I might be able to go back and get my master's degree, but I don't know how much that's worth it.
My dream job is to work for CSIS, but I know that's borderline impossible if I don't have some way to get my foot in the door.
To think I have to start uni soon
I'll probably enroll for CompSci, as I am not sure we have you guys' IT equivalent over here
altough getting an IT job without an university education would be pretty fucking sweet

Is CSIS, Canadian Security Intelligence Service or Center for Strategic and International Studies?
Just go see if they have an internship and do that.
Canadian one I'm pretty sure.

It's the Canadian one obviously. I checked their website and they don't seem to offer internships, but if they do I live in the completely wrong part of the country for that anyway because I'd imagine you'd probably have to go to Ottawa for that.
[editline]7th October 2014[/editline]
Never mind apparently they do have internships, but only if your university offers a co-op work placement there. I doubt mine does because we suck too much for that.
Is it really that hard to get a job there?
Is it really that hard to get a job there?
I legitimately have no idea I'm just assuming it is considering it's Canada's only intelligence agency so it's probably extremely competitive to get a job there. And I am definitely not the most qualified person to have a job at an intelligence agency.

Try for the internship anyways, there's no harm if you don't get it. It's probably not extremely competitive to get into, it's probably more if you got the brains to do the job, I'm pretty sure you can became an intelligence agent/officer if you really put some effort into it. You don't need to be the highest qualified person to get a job, you just need to be the one that tries the hardest.
Plus if you don't like it at the CSIS, you can find something else to do, that is what college is all about.
[editline]7th October 2014[/editline]
There is plenty of under qualified people in any job, if they can get into the job you want, you can most definitely get into it.
If you want a job in something like I do (I NEED TO GO TO SPACE MORE THAN THE DAMN SPACE CORE) then you probably need a college degree. Getting an engineering degree is just taking your lifetime of physics and math knowledge and applying it to solve problems, and applied math/physics is much more fun than general Ed learn for the test kinda shit.
But no one should feel they HAVE to go to college. Taep do some srs internet browsing and find out what degrees best support your field, or find a degree you have a passion for.

Also your enthusiasm for the topic will greatly affect how interviewers perceive you, coming in with a passion and a drive for the subject helps loads

I'm in my third year it's too late to change my major unless I want to do another two years at minimum. Besides, I did read that intelligence agencies are decent places to try to get a job as a history major because it shows you have good analytical thinking and writing skills so that's what got me on to the whole CSIS thing after I decided I didn't want to be a teacher anymore.
I'll probably go talk to the co-op office at my university and see if I can at least try to get a CSIS internship. Hopefully I don't have to go to Ottawa for it because CSIS has two offices in my province but I guess it would be nice to see a different part of the country for once in my life if I did have to.

But they'll probably want me to bring my grades up because I really fucked myself over when I went through my super depressed phase.

This. Also, I've been doing a lot of research work tracking IS for a Journalism project I'm working on and I've decided that a career in intelligence wouldn't be so bad. Seems interesting.
I've gotten to do a few problems involving basic orbital mechanics and application of momentum transfer to spacecraft.
Having a lot of fun so far, but this course is pretty intense in pacing. We covered 3 chapters in one week, far faster than the regular physics class. Good news is we spend a whole quarter on relativistic and quantum physics, so I gotta study hard and pass this exam so I can stay on the honors track

Also my textbook is great, one problem featured this excerpt:
"You are about to take another measurement of the peaks angle from the horizon, but your first mate, walking by, spills hot coffee on your back, you drop your transit on the deck, and it breaks. You severely cuss out the first mate and take the transit to the chief engineer, who says it will take 3 days to fix ("Ye canna expec' me to work miracles, Cap'n!" he says)
There are tons of references and jokes embedded in the end of chapter problems, and some in the in-chapter examples as well
totally copied this from ym other post

Remember get a suit, don't fuck up like me. I'm super ashamed that I didn't dress up when I talked to the training sergeant. I really fucked up that first impression, which is everything. Dress up and show initiative, they'll probably show you around the CSIS while you're there.
Training Sergeant at my local PD is requesting that I raise my GPA to a 3.25, I'm at 3.06 overall, in order to get a internship, at the rate I'm going I won't have an internship till next year. Don't worry about grades, it takes time and all, but hell you're what 20 years old? You got time to change, don't worry about taking more time, people at my college are graduating in 5-6 years. I turn 20 in November and I'm on time to graduate in 4 years, but I felt like if I took it slower, I could have gotten way more experience in.
About the history degree though, the chief of my local PD said, during a seminar, that they look for people majoring in sciences and fields that requiring thinking, because they are the ones that think outside the box. So really, any field that requires a lot of thinking and problem solving will work for intelligence, I'm assuming, because you would have to problem solve a lot of ways to gather and use information.
Instead of changing your major, is there a minor or certificate you can do? For instance, I'm a Criminal Justice Major, but I'm also taking communication classes in order to satisfy a Conflict Resolution certificate. The certificate is a backup plan and very useful in itself in day to day life, I can probably go into becoming a mediator and stuff like that, but ultimately I want to work in law enforcement.
You're going for DCPD?
You're going for DCPD?
Trying to intern there since it's local, I wouldn't mind working for them either, it's either SFPD or DCPD for me. I could always do a lateral transfer, work SFPD then DCPD.
Loads of military hardware moving over, through and around my town for some reason. Presumably they're pushing in loads of training incase they have to go to the middle east, atleast I'd think so.
Got this picture yesterday:

I was at my dads last night but apparently a V-22 landed opposite one of my mates houses in a field and troops got out, stood around for a while, then got back in and flew off again.
A C-130J escorted by two fighters flew over my house about a week ago really freaking low. And the air force is doing more bombing training than ever off the coast near me in an area called "The Wash".
AND three of these:

Drove through the town a couple of days ago in a convoy. Didn't get a picture but it was definitely those.
Its like bird watching, but with military vehicles, its great.
Goodbye facepunch, going to Okinawa!
Have fun :D

good general advice for life
Shit me, I was talking about seeing loads more military training near me:
http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lincolnshire-29544064
It's quite far from me but they were doing training over the wash and Lakenheath is where most of the aircraft I've been seeing are coming from.

Oh cool I plan on going SFPD. Spoke to an officer who said that they're actually really short right now, so it's not all that challenging to get an academy slot.

The fitness test is pretty easy from what I've heard too. One of my current teachers retired from SFPD just last year and he tells us things about becoming a cop and what it is like being a cop all the time. There's even a guy in my class who is in the process of going into the academy.
Also, [sp]SFPD requires you give them your Facebook password or no job[/sp]
[editline]8th October 2014[/editline]
Also where are you going to school now?
