I now have an urge to buy a motorcycle instead of a car. I've thought it over and decided that the affordability, efficiency, cheap insurance and feel of riding a motorcycle will warrant sacrificing hauling capability (which I have rarely found myself needing). IFAP's thoughts on this little dream and tips on how to get me started?

Its a great idea, as long as you value safety. Don't buy a sport bike or a big cruiser. Go for something from the 70's or 80's. Ideally, you'd want something comfortable, reliable, that's fun to ride, without being too much temptation. Temptation is why you don't get a sport bike. You can have one later in life. I had an '81 Yamaha Virago, and I loved it, though I only got to ride it a few times. For a reliable bike, it only cost me $1400 out the door. My dad had an '86 Honda Shadow which was also pretty nice, but much more cruiser-y. I liked the Virago because it was a perfect middle ground. [t]http://i.imgur.com/TwPlXQM.jpg[/t]
Its a great idea, as long as you value safety.
I love bikes, but tbh if you value safety you wouldnt be riding one shit that would result in bruises in a car often results in death on a motorcycle
just realized thats the only picture i have with all three of the vehicles i've owned in it. [editline]18th December 2014[/editline] fuk
its less the fact that you can hurt yourself more easily with a mistake, and more the fact that people in cars are often retarded and will end up killing/maiming you unintentionally though the former is definitely a factor especially if you live in an area that isnt sunny and dry
friend has one and likes it well enough, affordable yes. Fun to drive when it's raining whatsoever or cold, no. Expect to spend lots on proper cold weather gear, have a wet butt etc. I would only get one if you already had a car for when you need it. The motorcycle ought to be an OPTION imo. Cheap jaunts around town, short fun rides. Oh also grocery shopping is great with a backpack I hear.

Where they think because they're small they can pass cars inside their lanes or scoot through standing traffic and stuff.
honestly i have anxiety when it comes to driving on florida roads and the car accident people that come through the ER isnt helping it's completely thrown me off buying a bike as well.
I understand the safety risk, and plan on spending a hefty amount on a really good full-face helmet, as well as kneepads, elbowpads, boots and leathers.
I wouldn't feel safe even with all that if I knew I was about to get taken out by a dumbass in an F150 or something
I understand the safety risk, and plan on spending a hefty amount on a really good full-face helmet, as well as kneepads, elbowpads, boots and leathers.
You're not going to be happy lugging around all that kit wherever you go.
So after the poor abuse my Camaro has received from a moronic uninsured driver, I've decided I need to treat it to something once I have money again. Now tonight I saw my first third-gen camaro with louvers, and I'm pretty much sold on the idea now. What do you guys think looks best? Winner for the one piece design: Zing for the three-piece design: Or disagree for nothing. Keep in mind, I already have the IROC-Z hood louvers, so it should blend in pretty solidly, especially since they should be pretty easy to repaint. I'd say one-piece design.
One piece, especially if you can get a good deep black instead of that strange grey.
Thanks for the feedback, but I did put ratings in the post guys D: Also, black is mandatory and is how all the ones I've looked at are sold, unless I were to get the whole car repainted, because something like this is AMAZING (although obviously without the chrome wheels and double spoiler)
I understand the safety risk, and plan on spending a hefty amount on a really good full-face helmet, as well as kneepads, elbowpads, boots and leathers.
I have been to a con where this one guy destroyed his face in a motorcycle accident, and lost the ability to walk. Guy kept talking about the importance of properly strapped full faced protection and even showed us some protectove plates for the spinal cord

IFAP's thoughts on this little dream and tips on how to get me started?
Get gear first, and when you look for a helmet, at least try it on in a store first. If there aren't any places nearby like for me, Revzilla lets you return if you got the wrong size/shape. I haven't gotten my helmet yet but the Bell Vortex is $180 and is DOT and Snell rated. Really, helmets priced higher aren't going to make the helmet safer, spending more will just get you more comfort features. I've had the same idea as you for reasons to buy a bike, and that's still my goal since I'm getting my gear one piece at a time, but I decided to wait on the bike a few months ago because I realized I'd be stuck with riding on the permit which means no riding after sun down (legally), and since it gets dark at ~5pm this time of year, it's not worth the risk driving back and forth to work, doing errands, going to concerts an hour or two away from me, etc. which only increases the risk of fines/suspension. There aren't any motorcycle classes this time of year around me, and I wouldn't stand a chance passing the DMV riding test. Plus it's cold and that means the summer/fall weather gear I bought isn't going to cut it, especially if it rains/snows and that's only going to be worse since I'd have barely any riding experience. Then my parents don't like the idea, I had the money for a bike but they offered to help me buy a nicer car than what I could afford since I'm not going to college right away and if I'm trying to get into the AF, why buy a bike now if I don't know where I'll end up in a year? Yeah cars are expensive, but they're also a helluva lot safer and unless you live in a sunshiny place year round with predictable weather, a bike isn't the wisest thing to have as your only mode of transportation. I was so set on getting a bike but now I think getting the car first and having it to fall back on when I can't/not safe to ride is a better idea in the long run. I've seen a lot of bad drivers on the road, a lot of people will just pull out into the road without looking and only brake at the last second when they see the big blob of a car coming. If it was a person on a bike instead? Fat chance the driver would have seen them. People are fucking stupid, and no amount of protection on a bike will save you from them. Don't forget that hospital bill. I've read r/motorcycles for a while and there are numerous albums of people who still got road rash/broken ribs and other bones even though they were wearing full protection. Turns out even good gloves wear down a lot faster than I thought on asphalt. I still want a bike but I'd rather get it as a secondary mode of transportation now. I'm not a big car guy, I don't like the aspect of driving a big box around and all the other shit there is to deal with, I like how you can get a bike which is just a bare bones machine without extra electronics, but it's just not the best option. My plan is to get an affordable pickup truck for its utility, be able to move shit when I need to, and then when I buy a (used) bike I can put it in the bed, drive it home, and start from there.
My dad rode a moped naked in italy whilst he was apocalyptically drunk and crashed into some bushes. Hes got a gnarly scar on his leg from it.
i bet your dad threw good parties

My brother, who has never played airsoft in his life, just said: "When I load my magazines, I always load in one metal one. I call it the snitch, because it ends the game immediately" I laughed harder than I should of.
