the claim you're trying to make is just too hilarious
the claim you're trying to make is just too hilarious
well then you are very easily amused
They royal family don't really run anything, and everyone in the UK knows this. We are also about to vote on voting reform, so we may be a step closing to having a system where we can better elect people we believe truly do care.
Yes I believe I did say the elected party runs the place.
But to further debate your point I want to warn you that no matter who in the end leads the country (from the parties you are choosing) it will always be bittersweet. Some thing will be better, but be prepared for things that will be worse, for the things you will have to fights.
Also complete democracy isn't smart either. The majority of people don't necessarily make the best decisions. Sometime one person in the whole country makes the best decision.

That's what a Republic is for.
[editline]28th April 2011[/editline]
I don't know why I capitalized Republic but I stand by it.
and I'd argue the majority of people are happy with the national identity they provide.
I have to admit. I am a bit jealous about the national identity bit.
But then again every country creates it's own in it's way. Royal family or not.
maybe they should turn the castles into a dentist's office
you need more of those bad

Haha, it's ok about the capitalization. My first language isn't English and I'm sure a lot of stuff I type doesn't make sense because I didn't completely master the language.
But my country Slovenia is a republic. And it's basically a democracy. Anything and everything the public doesn't like, they make an uprising and then it falls in to the peoples hands to vote about if we accept or do not accept a new law.
And this is basically a democracy right? To let the people decide.
(Forgive me though if I do not understand the meaning of democracy properly.)
I gotta say i agree with most of the brits here on why to support the monarchy as it generates alot of wealth, a national identity and a rich deep history in the country over many hundreds of years so why would you get rid of it overall. I can clearly resemble it as my own country the Danish monarchy which over 1000 years old, making it the forth oldest continual monarchy in the world still existing today, dating back to Gorm the old from 935AD.
All this making me feel my country is unique from another and i can't deny i'm proud when i see the old castle in Copenhage, or the enjoy of the public when the queen comes for a visit. There's bascially much more to it than you know ;)

Yes but there's a direct democracy and representative democracy. In a direct democracy people vote on every issue. In representative democracy people elect representatives who vote on issues for them. The US is a bit of both.
For example, people in individual states vote on measures and propositions directly, but people in Congress vote to pass federal laws.
I don't care about the monarchy, they can stay. I'm just tired of all the damn TV ads of the wedding, i'm so glad its over tomorrow.

I'm sick of royal wedding ads, I want the normal ads back!

This might not be on the point but I want to say this anyway:
To most of Europe, it feels as if in the USA it is always the people who decide everything.
I don't however understand what exactly you were trying to explain to me. That the way Slovenia works is direct democracy and representative democracy?
Or something else?
If you don't feel like explaining this, I'll try to learn from some Googling and Wikipedia :P

If Slovenia works anything like the US, there are houses of government that vote on federal laws, but people vote directly on more local laws. A combination of direct and representative Democracy.

Hezzy: FP's #1 troll. In the beginning, he was a righteous crusader for freedom and and orderly forum, but he was cast out by the man in charge, the almighty Garry. Full of bitterness and sarcasm, he came to lead the very trolls he once sought to destroy.
I should write a comic book about you

For the most part, US citizens have no control over the direct running of the federal government. We mostly just vote directly on issues at the local level.

Just look at the Spork topic someone bumped, I have always been a troll. Of course you weren't really around then so I'll forgive the fact you didn't (and still don't) really know anything about anything :)
Look at you derailing a thread! Such a bad example you're setting for the rest of the forum, Mr Moderator!!

Oh. Well in Slovenia it kind of goes like this:
On TV politicians debate on every fucking new law. If it's so minor that it won't really change anything, nobody cares and it gets accepted. If it's radical and is going to change a lot then people usually uprise and the whole country votes.
But I can't say there is a difference between local and federal, since Slovenia is so small, everything is local...
i was taught that in slovenia you just grab ak-47's and elect whoever survives the death frenzy because he's shown to be good at dodging bullets
The Queen is 80+ and she works extremely hard for a woman of her age. She does carries out a variety of tasks such as maintianing foreign relations to awarding our brave soldiers medals. Also, all you Americans remember who colonised you before you go slagging off the Royal Family.

The Guardian and BBC both have separate polls that show the same thing. Not only that, I see a lot of people supporting the monarch.
But you're just a British nationalist.

Actually Slovenia doesn't have any competent weaponry that's why we're happy to be a part of NATO.
We're also not barbarians and are quite advanced.
We do love being farmers and growing produce and fine wine, but we also enjoy programming, advancing means of producing energy, advancing medicine and much more. We're just mostly not mentioned and/or mistaken for Slovakia.
The Royal family doesn't use that much money, and what they take, they give back a tonne more.
Not all politicians work their way up.
Not all politicians do. But 100% of royals don't.
