I haven't came up with any really good images myself other than on Bad Religion. And it's generally just a man, not necessarily even Frank, dressed like one of those cabaret crooners singing his heart out to no one, at all, in the audience.
He's just a damn good songwriter.

I always just assumed it was in the view of Jenny, but reading it as the narrator actually being Frank and Forrest Gump being a metaphor for the man he loves gives the song a much deeper meaning, really nice that way. Really cleverly written to both directly reference the film and have such great symbolism behind the lyrics, Frank is such a fantastic lyricist.
