If you saw a box next to someone's name, you'd know that they're generally stupid. You could access all sorts of statistics on who rated who the most. It was almost revolutionary, because it started when social networking/media was still pretty new. Now it's pretty pointless. I can see the ratings for individual posts, but I don't really care about other people's ratings for individual posts. If a post gets a bunch of funny ratings, that's great, but I'll decide if I think it's funny. The worst part is that other communities have caught up. There are a ton of forums/websites that use their rating systems to hide abusive posts, and to formulate scores for individual users on how much of a dick they are. It works extremely well.

Actually the OP made some key mistakes when posting that were most likely the result of not lurking for long enough. His most obvious mistake was assuming that MW2 had modding tools, the people who post in general games discussion are generally seasoned gamers, generally PC players who would find such a question absolutely absurd. Another was useless fluff, had he just asked whether it was possible to extract models from the game in .obj format and said nothing else he would have gotten straightforward replies and could have avoided 20 people replying with "nope". Another problem was flagrant use of ";)". Also, having an avatar that is a picture of Sarah Palin with a vagina photoshopped onto her face isn't a great way to be taken seriously.

I was gonna be sympathetic and try convince him that not all of Facepunch was like that, but that's gotta be the most immature 41 year old I've ever seen.

Facepunch has always been like this, as far as I know. And it's only going to change if they make smug attitudes, or any kind of unnecessary arrogance a bannable offense. But making that kind of rule won't pass easily, so it's not really practical, as it would probably do more bad than good, as there would be a massive shitstorm by doing that. Flaming is already bannable, but you know everyone has just found another way around it. That's why I lurk much, much more, than I do post, because I just can't waste my time getting in stupid, pointless arguments, with angstful users who act like they know everything (not saying everyone acts like this).

It was a problem then, but wouldn't be now because there's no record of your total ratings & two people need to rate you dumb for it to show up. So if someone tried to rate you dumb out of revenge, it probably wouldn't even show up.
