Side note for those who don't know it. ADD is now ADHD, its been that way since 1994.

Yup. I just call ADHD the extremly creative person disease, but I'm not the type to argue with what doctors say.
I have an extreme case of ADHD so the only thing that lets me really function at all is medication. I've tried therapy, diet and everything else possible.
my ADD makes me forget things, doodle and space out.
if you tell me to do 3 things, i will likely eradicate one command from my mind.
Having ADD doesn't mean you're mentally insane...
Have a sense of humor.
I actually have ADD and I still think this is hilarious.
I hate ADD/ADHD cause every time it's mentioned suddenly everyone has it
"I have ADD so I can't read books"
"I have ADHD so I can't do this"
it's being used as an excuse not to do things and it's also somehow "hip" to have it
[editline]4th February 2011[/editline]
it seems like every teen has ADHD or ADD these days
And autism. Don't forget autism. Half of Facepunch claims it as their reason for social awkwardness.

I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 12. I was on medication until I was around 16.
Life has been great since I quit, and I strive to go against the diagnosis. I try to show people that ADHD is bullshit, I'm clearly able to do everything everyone else does.
Don't ever take ADHD medication.

ADHD and ADD sounds like bullshit because people say they have it when they don't. But they develop it because they think that they have it.
autism is more "physical" stuff in the brain fucking it up
I've got this really bad association to autistic though. They always seem to be smug about their autistic level and often whine about their lives, but in a weird way. To me it sounds like they often say things like "I was beaten in school and I am permanently brain damaged!!! :DDD:D:D:D:" in a way that almost sounds sarcastic, but isn't
again, dissorders seems to be popular and cool to have. Probably to stand out and be different or seem smart (ooh he has autism so he's smart like all the mathematical genius autists), but there are better and less damaging ways to do that
Its nice to know when you actually have a severe case of ADHD that people say you don't and lie.
Then one day you don't take your medication, and suddenly they realize why you have ADHD. Its kind of a dick thing to claim you have it even though you don't, but going around and saying its lies actually hurts people.
Its nice to know society is so accepting to people with disorders, and here is a pro-tip to tell if someone has ADHD. If they claim they have ADHD and they use it as an excuse, they're lying. Most people with ADHD I know, including myself, were taught not to lie because it actually is like an insult to you.
it's one thing to lie ("I don't have ADHD people just say I have it and I'm diagnosed with it but I'm just crazy!"), but to shove it up everyone's faces to make it seem like it's a good thing they probably never can get is another thing ("I have ADHD and that's why I'm crazy!")
i basically don't give a fuck if people have disorders as long as it's a problem, and not because it's not normal. I think in most cases it's not a problem for everyone. they just like to think it is, which makes it a problem

When I was diagnosed, the first thing they tried to ram into my head was the fact that even though I have ADHD, it's not an excuse and it just means I have to work harder. I never use it as an excuse. I take responsibility for my choices and mistakes and I don't let a simple disability help me hold myself back.

ADHD is the brain synapses not sending and receiving the correct amount of a certain chemical. Like most medication, ADHD medications pretty much cram that chemical into the body and force the brain to absorb/produce more.

I didn't nessecearily mean that it prevents you from doing things, but more as an excuse after you've done something bad to avoid disrespect. And to be honest it does look like you know a lot about ADHD, which is kind of what I meant. Like a longterm affection where you're trying to improve because you got a reason (diagnosis) to do it. It makes me wonder why you even got diagnosed in the first place since you think smart and positively like that.
I dunno a whole lot on how it works in the brain, but sure it's probably a real (as in physical) brain disability. It just doesn't seem like that at all when all the kids go around saying they have it, with or without (mostly it seems) a diagnosis
(every time I explain this in public I always get people telling me how they have the real deal and not some fake one)
Keep in mind there are three variants of ADHD.
1. predominantly inattentive
2. predominantly hyperactive-impulsive
3. combination of both
There are also cases of different severity. So, the people who say they have ADHD but do not appear to have it may just have a mild (but still questionable) case. Also, people with more severe cases of ADHD, such as Swilly and my self, are often diagnosed earlier in life because it is easier to spot.

But seriously, any questions about ADHD or medications involved with it, just ask.
Though I don't know a lot about any specific brand or type of medications (some exceptions).

I have A.D.D so I cant type a rebuttal.
ADHD can be a viable excuse in some cases.
An excuse for irrational behavior or being obnoxious is questionable.
A scenario were ADHD can be used as an excuse is when I find myself pondering societal ethics for 20 min during an important exam.
Hmm They labeled slaves that ran away from there masters with a diseases. I wonder if the same can go for people who have A.D.D. It seems the only stuff me and people who have it dont want to do is boring repetitive tasks that dont stimulate the brain. It could just be a normal not wanting to do bullshit things. But I dont know that much about it to make a real claim.
ADHD doesn't exist... All the best people have ADHD.
-meanness-
Also, it is not the school systems. (though they could be changed to help)
ADHD affects me in many activities such as work, driving, hunting, cleaning, and even getting ready for school in the morning.
It's a hard thing to describe. I assumed you would just know that I meant people who would have (and have) been said to have ADHD given my previous point. It's only a minor grammatical error..
I apologize.
What I meant to say was that "ADHD" isn't a disorder. It's essentially a word for people who excel in spatial thinking, as opposed to linear thinking. This isn't inherently a problem. The world is made mostly by people that think in a linear fashion.
Interesting way of putting it.
I have ADD, I don't tell people I have it just to grab attention. I don't tell people I have it at all, actually. It's really disruptive. I can crack down and make myself stick to certain things (if theyre relatively short), but it IS a hindrance.
Also, this video is hilarious.
I think I might have ADD, I've been wondering since 2 years or so, I do recgonize myself in the "Tests" you take online but what really gave me a hint is when I started taking "Speed" drugs and [sp]Cocaine (Not on a regular basis)[/sp]. Those drugs made me feel normal, following a conversations was easy and I wasn't just throwing sentences out of my mind to keep the conversation going.
I'm 20 years old and I've been how I've been my whole life, I know myself and I'd like to be tested for it.

It doesn't matter how often you take it. That stuff is bad for you.

Then go to the doctor and stop snorting cocaine.
God.
Bump an old thread to say your treating your add with cocaine.
what
Bump an old thread to say your treating your add with cocaine.
what
Aww man, I was hoping to participate in the conversation going on in here...then I read your post and noticed all the post dates. :(
I know five people who are or definitely would be diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, had their school grades screwed over by the symptoms (it's still not an excuse for failure but it does make things much harder) and tried out this ADHD medication.
The only person who didn't quit due to its side effects and saw a HUGE improvement in grades was me.
Medication isn't THE answer to curing ADD/ADHD (it DOES help though) and sometimes it could be another disease/disorder (i.e. depression) that may create similar symptoms. I'm also the only one out of the five that had "strict/demanding Asian parents" so parenting is definitely a huge factor when it comes to ADD/ADHD (even IF it's biological in origin)
Source: I'm almost finishing my Masters in Psychology while taking medication this very moment
O and those who say the medication suppresses their creativity can go fuck themselves. I run a YT channel and I direct/write/edit while under the influence and people still think I'm crazy in a creative/random way.
I feel offended by reading this thread.
I've got some pretty bad ADD myself, and medication was a last resort because my parents also didn't believe in it at first. It can be treated by other means, but the 'shortcut' = pills and it becomes a matter of pros vs cons (side effects vs benefits)
They do good stuff to you, man. I could get a weeks worth of work done in a couple of hours, its like my brain goes into overdrive and I can do anything. Off the medication, I'll try to work (And believe me, I tried for a few years before resorting to meds) I'll end up doodling and 5 minutes later realising I originally intended to work. When I force myself to get it done, the quality of the work is usually rushed and poor overall.
Sure, there are too many misdiagnoses and the pharmaceutical companies are thriving over them; but it doesn't mean that the condition doesn't exist! I love having it, I like to think it gives me creativity. Also, I'll read books off of medication, as someone mentioned before it's all about stimuli. If something interests you, you got all the attention in the world. If it's something that isn't necessarily exciting it's way more difficult to focus on getting it done.
It's not a big deal, and nothing that deserves sympathy or anything, it's just one of those things where you need a little help organizing your thoughts and usually the outcome of treatment is great. I was ecstatic about my grades going up an insane amount (After the side-effects began to get more bearable of course) and the depressing feeling of being a failure/someone who can't achieve anything was completely gone.
That aside, this video was pretty funny.
