Interesting. Did you use a low shutterspeed for the cars one so you captured their trails? Do you sit out there with the camera and guard it or what? Also: I've heard of people using TI80 (?) Calculators for doing something similar.
For the cars, that was a 5 second exposure. For the first 10-15 minutes out there, I set the camera to manual and get the perfect balance of Apeture, Shutterspeed, and ISo to reach the right exposure and interval time. Then I basically leave it alone. At the hotel, though I sat inside and would check it while I read a magazine. They warned us about "balcony jumpers" Also, yes I've seen videos of people using Ti83's for that, you can get a program to send the shutter signal through the port on the bottom of the device. Kind of smart, actually.
Concerning the TI-83/TI-84 Plus als Intervalometer: http://www.instructables.com/id/Turn-a-TI-Graphing-Calculator-into-an-Intervalomet/ about my video lacking FPS, I use virtualDub to make the movie out of the images, I have no clue how to set the fps however. I am going to france next week, and I will make a lot of Timelapses, I hope I can get the Aperture and Shutterspeed perfectly, I need to check the ISO settings. I am still new to all this though.
These are amazing, you're so lucky to have been able to go to this different places. Love this sort of stuff.
I love the top video taken of a hotel and street. I think you should do more of those. The clouds are good but something about the city one is just extremely good, being at night also adds to it. I look forward to seeing your next time lapse.
It's been awhile, but I just completed a recent one. I think it turned out fantastic. Youtube is still converting to HD, I believe. But I uploaded the full quality copy. It's 1080p MKV. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NIEGYG2M I'll update the main page with the video when it's finished. EDIT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSCwzSHXW8w&fmt=37
Just thought I'd bump and say I'm working on a small video tutorial series on timelapses. Starting video a video camera (Using my HV20 as an example) and going to an SLR setup or general Digital camera. Going through particular capture settings, forming it into a video, processing, post processing and colour enhancement, and maybe even possible music selection. Some of the stuff in the series may seem to be common sense, but you'd be surprised how much can go into making them nice. I'm by no means professional, but there is more than simply turning on a camera and leaving it on a tripod. Will probably be 5 parts, 2 parts for videocamera, 2 parts for SLR, and one final for the post production most likely. I'm almost done with the processing section and will move onto the SLR. If you have any questions or things I should mention, let me know. I still have the projects un-rendered in Vegas so I can change em up and add voiceovers, etc.
I'm glad you bumped this- I missed it when it came round the first time. Do you make the music yourself? You have a good ear for picking the right music.
You're time lapses really motivated me too get my head back in the game. I haven't done a photo session in such a long time. Thank you =) I've always been interested in this type of photography. Do you think this would be sufficient for me? I got a EOS XSi DSLR. http://cgi.ebay.com/Timer-Remote-Cord-for-Canon-Rebel-XSi-XTi-XT-X-RS-60E3_W0QQitemZ230372310856QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCamera_Camcorder_Remotes?hash=item35a3427f48 Is there anything with good functionality but cheaper? or is that the best i can get for that price range?
Thank you! =) I recently have found a new passion in timelapses like yours. Thank you very much
I don't pick my own music. Generally the title of the video was the song I chose. Though my recent ones were my own titling. Check the description of the videos to find the music. They are incredibly cheap and feel light. Even 1st party ones are cheap and plastic. But they are a simply circuit. Nothing needs to be high end about them.
Kinda funny. I'm like you, but the Nikon version. I use a D40 and I've also got a Sigma 10-20mm. I've been doing time lapses for the past year or so. I just did one for this big dump of snow over the weekend. I've yet to open a Youtube account, but I may just do that now and inaugurate it with this latest time lapse. One suggestion: You should use a deflicker filter on VirtualDub to eliminate the flicker that appears as the light conditions subtly change from picture to picture (especially during sunrises and sunsets). I noticed it in your sunrise vid. Here's what I use: http://compression.ru/video/deflicker/index_en.html Also, what compression do you use? I've been using x264 AVIs and it's been working out pretty well for me.
I made another one for the 4th of July. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUO1j3AyzGk [editline]02:00AM[/editline] http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4KUG8AAB Download if people want.
I hate timelapses... They make me feel empty inside. But they do however look well done.
I love how if you look closely in the sunrise attempt you can see beams of sunlight, all of these videos are superb!
Shooting star at 2:19 on the first video! [editline]05:15PM[/editline] Or an airplane..
Wow, truly beautiful timelapses. Very good choice of music in the first video, you've got talent.
New one I did yesterday. The colors came out great. 250 Miles from Orlando to my home in West Boca Raton. I shot at F22 to make a useful blur while traveling. This makes the video incredibly sharp, and as such the 1080p version is well worth it I think. Downside is my Cokin ND3 filter had slight dust spots which show up. As always, I'll upload any of the videos if anyone wants downloads.
how many pictures per minute did the camera take? Looks really great, except the said stains and reflection.
3 second intervals. So... 20 shots per minute, if my head math is right. About 4150 pictures.
Straddling a camera for ~3.5 hours, sounds like fun.
We suffer for art?
Artistic! I love your choice of music I recognize the first song would you mind posting a list of what you used?
All music should be listed in the video descriptions on the yootoobz. If not I'll add them. By first video, I assume you mean the latest. it's Natural Blues (I Monsters Mix) by Moby.
Hot damn, that last video. (A.k.a. the first one in the OP) really wakes my interest. The fact that it's so plain there, no surrounding mountains makes it feel so... surrealistic. Something only complimented by the fantastically highlighted colors, the wide angle, the great contrasts & the neat music that fits well with it. I've gotta do this with my 5DmkII when it comes in. :v:
colors in your latest video are beautiful, I love the overall viewing angle and how it showed off the clouds. My only gripe is that crumpled up tissue/paper/rag reflecting in your window the whole damn time.
Yea, I didn't see that from my perspective, but the camera was very close to the class and also was pointing up, to show off the horizon and sky, so I didn't know the reflection was in there. The paper was a receipt of a car charger I had to buy in order to do this timelapse. My camera was dead from not charging, and I really wanted to do this so I spent 60 bucks on a car charger for my battery. I do enjoy the empty-ness of the area surrounding the Florida Turnpike. I play some ambient music while I go through there and I always want to pull off and just go freecording.
Looks great, man! :D Really diggin' the colors.
Hamster, I used one of your songs in one of my other videos :D I considered using Hollywood, but I had listened to moby during the trip. : \ Also, Make more gameplays like the Coop RE5.
CNN called me about my Bridge timelapse: http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-485149 I posted it on there last night. My father said I could get more publicity of my work if I posted it on their User-Report section. So I got called by an iReport investigator, about 10 minutes ago. She asked about me, my occupation, my experience, how I shot it, why i shot it, where I shot it, under what circumstances, and any extra advice or info about how to shoot these videos. Rather surprising. She said it was one of the top ones they've seen. So it might show up on the CNN World One channel, which is based in london. They have a segment where they put together recent timelapses submitted on the site's section. :O Edit: Ok, that last part was optimistic, but it'd be neat.
I did a timelapse with my iPhone after I read this thread. Pretty bad. http://vimeo.com/14466879
