He's too much hero for one country.
Fairly controversial I suppose, but
I wish we had a Winston Churchil now.
I glad someone brought up Winston Churchill because now I have an excuse to post another anti-Winston fact I just remembered:
He said he wished Gandhi would be taken outside of Deli and trampled on by the Maharaja riding an elephant.
Just look at his real political past instead of the superficial Second World War stuff.
A drunken, misogynist career politician who sent thousands of soldiers to their deaths in the First World War and wrecked the British economy in the 1920s.
Churchill was only a cabinet member in the WWI. He wasn't involved in sending people to their deaths, he was involved in the way they used the money in the war effort (although he was criticised for that anyway).

Dude, he totally designed and pushed for the Gallipoli Campaign when everyone else disagreed. The whole thing was pretty much entirely his idea from the start.
60% of the fighting force was killed there. It was a mess.

One of the effects of living in a nation that has a short and boring history is that patriotism and national heroes aren't really a big thing here.
In Australia, that is.
[editline]24th November 2010[/editline]
Kidding.

Ahh yes who had the support of the people... oh wait!
The bolshevist party was bullshit and the majority of people supported other parties.
George Bush is my one and only hero, he really stood up for the american values against those outlander motherfuckers. Fucking communists and islamics. Obama on the other hand is a fucking faggot, he has done nothing good and he is driving the country into destruction and socialism.

I.K. Brunel is one of my heroes

He was (IMO) the greatest engineer we had at the greatest time for British engineering. Basically everything he made was bigger or grander than anything that had been done before, or it just had never been done before.
Sure, he lost vast amounts of money in the process, but who cares about that in hindsight.
I'll just leave this here instead of posting a wall of text and pictures: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isambard_Kingdom_Brunel
He's a perfect idol for the Brits of today to look back at and think "God, we were great once. We used to build things."

St. Patrick. Wow. You know he was Welsh right?
Wolfe Tone couldn't even kill himself properly.
If Brian O'Driscoll is a hero with what he gets paid then I'm Ireland's greatest person ever.
Add John Hume for sure and also, I think Eamon DeValera is really underrated since that movie where he was portrayed as a cold hearted bastard (and the actor went on to play Snape). He was really as important as Micheal Collins.
Oh, Charles Stewart Parnell and Daniel O'Connell.
Here in Luxembourg, he's called Superjemp.
Look for yourself.

This is just my opinion.
