Nice Pico reef. I also love aquarism, and I know everything about fresh and saltwater aquariums. I myself have a 5Gal Freshwater Planted aquarium and its perfectly cycled and setup. Picos are amazing. You can have them anywhere (near your bed, at your workplace etc). The only problem about picos is that they only fit small fish like gobyes or, at max, 1 or 2 small clownfish. Also, If you spill something wrong in the water, its bye bye aquarium. Goodluck with your pico man! I hope you update with more pictures soon :D
Nice to see some other aquarium hobbyists on this forum! Your reef looks amazing. It makes me want to try some saltwater stuff.
Might go to the store soon to get some crabs and stuff. Some more Live rock too to replace the coral skeletons I have in there now. No pictures because it looks pretty much the same as the last picture except the red goo moved from the sand to the rocks. The water change helped a lot but I can only combat it so much until I get the flow good. But it's looking like 1/4th inch ball socket joint tubing doesn't exist. [editline]26th October 2012[/editline] aaand the parameters are all good as well. Just need to clean it up for aesthetics really. [editline]26th October 2012[/editline] I will ultimately win, though. I'm scheming as we speak, oh yes.
Hmmmm I think I'm going to have to start a freshwater thread about this because I want to start an aquascaping tank!
I started a nano marine aquarium a few days ago (After a lot of research) and noticed some sort of creature living on one of the three rocks. It's tiny and has a little fan of very fine white "tentacles" around the head, and it withdrew after I watched it for a bit. It probably isn't an anemone or polyp, could it be a young featherduster/fan worm of some sort? There are a small number of empty tubes that look like they belonged to larger worms at some point, so it's probably a hitchhiker. Whatever it is, it's very shy.

[editline]30th October 2012[/editline] And if you [i]really[/i] want to get rid of it, just blast it with a syringe full of hot water. (dechlorinated, of course)
More like this, but I can only see the top. [t]http://puu.sh/1kt3T[/t] I'll keep it, it's quite interesting to look at and is most likely harmless like you said. Thanks for the information!
Dissidents exterminated. Society moving back to normal after the fast uprising. [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/rOpDR.jpg[/img_thumb] Also, a blurry reflection of the accused dictator and god-king. [editline]16th November 2012[/editline] Still need to make my way to the store to pick up some citizens to help keep the peace.
OvB, just buy a boat and become a sea hobo. Then the whole ocean can be your aquarium, and I can live belowdeck, or maybe on a little intertube island towed behind. Really impressive stuff, with this aquarium! I didn't realize conditions needed to be so precise for proper reef development. I suppose that's why wild reef is in such a dangerous spot, huh? Can't wait to see the finished result!

[editline]18th November 2012[/editline] I'll settle for Captain Nemo's Nautilus.
Got some stuff today. New rock! [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/h1ynv.jpg[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/dTjYf.jpg[/img_thumb] New citizens to rule over. However they will be in the other tank while this tank cycles yet again on account that I had to remove [i]all[/i] the rock to fit that beast in there. [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/7MBsl.jpg[/img_thumb] Custom LED lights coming soon. Hopefully I can wire them up without killing myself. [editline]12th December 2012[/editline] (There are more snails/crabs than that. I just didn't want a handful of critters.)
Update yaaaay, I was looking forward to this!
Oh god one of my fish just ate a hermit crab what. Okay, so I put half of them in the little tank just in case. Hang in there guys. [editline]12th December 2012[/editline] Hopefully the ones in the big tank can make a Mogadishu mile to the rocks while I distract the hawkfish with food. [editline]12th December 2012[/editline] Here's the tank with it's new hopefully long lived residents. [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/XKqcA.jpg[/img_thumb]
.. How big was the fish to eat a hermit crab?...
Repost from Electrical Engineering thread: Merry Christmas to me: Shown: LED driver w/ dimmer switch, power supply, two LED wafers with 3 LEDs each, heat sink+fan. Not shown: some wires, thermal paste [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/Ktvqh.jpg[/img_thumb] I'm guessing the brown wire on the power cord goes to the ground on the power supply? [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/hO9WZ.jpg[/img_thumb] Not sure if the 6 LEDs will get hot enough to warrant a heat sink, but all the parts were on sale and I needed something to mount the things to anyway, besides, better safe than sorry I guess. [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/VdJG6.jpg[/img_thumb] Now I just got to make it all work. [editline]13th December 2012[/editline] [QUOTE=ewitwins;38811932].. How big was the fish to eat a hermit crab?...[/QUOTE] He flipped the shell over with his mouth and then sucked the crab out like escargot. Except it was a crab, and not a snail.
That stuff looks awesome!! ... And that fish sound ingeniously evil...
Soooo... How's this thing coming along?
Still wanna know, btw.
It's still going, don't worry. I haven't got the light built yet. I still need to get the proper rivets for it. Been too busy with school and stuff. Maybe this summer which starts in like 2-3 weeks.
Wow has it really been a whole year since I started this? Doesn't feel like it. (Don't worry still going)
Have a teaser for your patience. [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/lJguTzd.jpg[/img_thumb]
Purple reef lobster? I considered getting one of those, until I read that they might go for fish. Looks nice!
Don't do it they're terrible. You'll never see them, and live in constant paranoia that they'll eat your fish. Only reason he's in the Pico is because I finally had an opportunity to snag him out of the 90. It's like hunting Osama Bin Laden. So I finally had a chance to get him but realized I didn't have anywhere to put him so I just tossed him in the Pico. It's now an Indefinite Detention Center. He's been a very bad boy. [editline]6th August 2013[/editline] Not sure if I should keep him in there, and risk it with the other shrimps and corals I plan to have, or just give him to the fish store.
If you take him out he'll eat you.
Work continues at a snails pace! [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/ZP21U4u.jpg[/img_thumb] I have to figure out a way to attach it like this: [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/E08vval.jpg[/img_thumb] (photobombed by the lobster) [editline]8th August 2013[/editline] Will replace cardboard with acrylic. This was just a proof of concept. [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/TZ4tSRr.jpg[/img_thumb]
So I did this today and plugged it in and nothing happened except a little green light came on in the corner: [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/OjU5K5m.jpg[/img_thumb] Any electrical gurus want to throw out ideas as to why before I electrocute myself, or worse, ruin the power supply? [editline]9th August 2013[/editline] I'm too embarrassed to go as the electrical engineering thread because I showed them this project a year ago and they're all making like mini computers and stuff and here I am and I can't wire together a fan and two LEDs plz help!
It's ok, the EE thread can be intimidating but they're friendly. It appears to me that the fan has been connected across V+ and V+ (hard to make out due to flash) which means it's getting 0v supplied (i.e. no damage done to other) connect the black line to com (or "common return" as it's better known) it should work then.
It works! metallics saves the day!
Now I just got to figure out where/how to mount the Driver, and LEDs, and finish designing the canopy. Think I'll make a cardboard analog to see how everything fits. (a more ridged cardboard than a Dr.Pepper box this time!) Got lotsa figurin' to do. Also need to find that pesky soldering iron. [editline]10th August 2013[/editline] Does anyone know if it's safe to cut an aluminum bar with a normal Miter saw blade? I might be able to cut this down a bit and fit it all in the canopy better. [editline]10th August 2013[/editline] I mean the normal wood drill bits cut through it like butter so I don't think there will be a problem.
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/JmkfT5a.jpg[/img_thumb] Cardboard mk1 seems to work good. Need to bring the fan and heatsink up higher because the plastic was resting on glass and LEDs would've been too close to water. Other than that I think I got the dimensions right. Driver fits between the frames and the LED's will have a nice area between then where I can put protective acrylic so they don't get wet. [editline]11th August 2013[/editline] [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/CC8s7oF.jpg[/img_thumb] [editline]11th August 2013[/editline] Going to try to make it as air tight as possible, with the only holes being in the back near the fan so I don't get much salt creep inside because I can't imagine that's healthy for the relatively exposed power supply.
