Timing belt is priority. If that thing snaps while being started or being ran, (like my friend's Subaru) you're looking at a new engine/internals buddy.
FYI this depends on if the engine is interference design or not. I've thrown 3 timing belts off of D15s and put a new one on in my friend's yard, or the side of the road, and kept driving. The Talon I had that jumped time chipped two valves though, because of interference.
If your car is a diesel you WILL smash your valves with your pistons if the timing belt snaps.

I want this. It's very cheap (~$610, ~460€). Only problem with it (other that it's too far away for me to buy) is that it won't pass inspection due to the current owner changing the engine to one that's about twice as powerful as the original.
Timing belt and replacing the rotors can be $1,500+.
Think about them apples.
900 for the belt and labor, 178 for the rotors and labor
[editline]30th December 2012[/editline]
mister tire gave us a $400 quote for the brakes plus labor
some other place I can't remember gave us $200 then $250 a week later
pep boys gave us a solid $178
the amount of wrong in this page (except for what bradley pointed) is astonishing
the amount of wrong in this page (except for what bradley pointed) is astonishing
i don't understand :'(
the issue with all of this is that going back and saying '5+ car experts just told me to sell the damn thing' will be responded with a chuckle from my mom's boyfriend and more annoying comments about his shop friend and him saying it's crazy to tell it with this few miles
900 bucks for a timing belt job on a Jetta is fucking outrageous, so you know.
At even high price of $85/hour Mechanic cost (General baseline is $65-$75), that's assuming the job will take damn near 11 hours to complete. Anyone that slow at it shouldn't be touching your car in the first place.
It's about a 6-8 hour job for the most basic mechanic, and should cost you no more than ~$700 (and that's expensive!). A skilled mechanic could do the job in 3-4 hours easily.
>call up pepboys to get new tires
>"hey I need tires for a 1982 Cressida"
>pepboys guy:"oh cool a cressida"

Pretty much just the timing cover, but before that the stuff attached in front of it. Couple of bolts and studs. Interference systems like on my KA I suppose you can destroy components if the chain snaps

I do the same at my work. Some guys really do come rolling in style though:

This grandpa even had a Willys Jeep
They know me at PepBoys as the guy who has the piece-of-shit Red MR2 thats always breaking v:v:v
They know me at all the parts stores in town as "That guy who buys a lot of head gaskets"
It's pretty much the only thing I ever need when I put Honda engines together. The exhaust gasket is reusable, as is the intake one if it's the plastic/paper one and I can get it off without breaking. :)

Well sorry, but I must be thinking subaru in my head, where a timing belt job is easily over $1000, and brakes, depending on how bad they are, aren't super cheap when you can't do it yourself.
I cant believe you guys actually go to PepBoys.
"PepBoys does everything for less"
We also drain your transmission fluid for free! (refill is extra)

out of curiosity, are BMWs expensive to maintain? ie. a 2002 or 1994
out of curiosity, are BMWs expensive to maintain? ie. a 2002 or 1994
Yes. Luxury brand + German = expensive, especially if you live in the US.
Consumer Reports 2010 shows electrical issues, audio system issues (terrible reliability on the 5-series), and engine issues on both the 3 and the 5 series 2004 BMWs.
BMW's are good at breaking down
My brother bought replacement windshield wipers for "our" car (It's mostly his, though I'm on the insurance and borrow it occasionally). He had these wipers in the back seat for a month. I've reminded him twice to put them on, since he was driving close to 7 hours each way to go skiing with my other brother and a friend (Who, by the way, isn't very comfortable with driving after he clipped a woman walking on the side of a highway).
Since it's snowy as fuck recently, he decides to bring the tools needed to change out the wipers. But he's lazy and didn't change them, so about an hour ago my mom gets a text message from my other brother saying that the windshield wiper flew off the fucking car and he had to change them at the side of the road, in -15°C weather, probably illuminated by a cell phone screen.
A+ would trust with maintenance again.
Mom asks me to take my sister to get food, and try to find some medicine for her cat, while she's away for the day. Come back with food and my dad, who's staying to watch my brother for the day while my mom is gone, gets an attitude because I didn't tell him where I was going and I didn't buy him any food either. Honestly I didn't know he was even there until I saw his truck in the driveway. Never mind that he only comes to visit every other weekend. He's a fucking asshole 90% of the time I see him, he's snuck out everything of value that he left here, not telling my mom. His dad has paid for his lawyer, but my dad won't pay for my moms lawyer.
He bought a bunch of guns, and bought a bunch of food and stored it down in our basement. Spent money we didn't have, to "Protect his family". Well now he's taken his guns, and is taking his stores of food. What the fuck ever dad.

I usually don't dig the Mustang interior, but the reverse glow gauges are sexy.
Tools to change wipers? What tools?
Beats me, I didn't think you needed anything (Haven't used the car long enough to need to worry about it) though he did say that he needed something to change them. The wipers were in blister packs, so it could have been scissors for all I know.
BMW's are good at breaking down
Not to mention Audis :v:
Tools to change wipers? What tools?
Flathead screwdriver maybe? v:v:v
Some wiper blades are a bitch to remove without a prying tool
It's not terribly bad for the tires to do a a little drifting on the snow in an empty parking lot once in a while, is it? Great fun :v:

In an FWD car too!
