Oh yeah, we had Freezing fog last night. I almost slipped coming out my front door, and then hit 4 different patches of Black ice on the way to work. Two before I left my neighborhood, one turning onto the main road down to the freeway outside my neighborhood, and then turning into the gate when I got into work. Not to mention the people on the on the freeway on ramp, and exit ramp doing barely 20 mph where it actually wasn't icy.
What sort of tools should I get for just working on basic stuff?
(I have tools but they're all mismatched and I want my own set)
Also, what are the disadvantages to metal head-gaskets if any? (not copper)
afaik, the only real disadvantage is they're more expensive, and sometimes overkill. They might also be thicker, but I'm not sure if that's just certain gaskets made specifically to be thicker (which alters Compression ratios), or if they all are.
MLS head gaskets are thinner, not thicker, than composite counterparts (unless you get specifically a thick copper head gasket). The advantages are that they hold boost in better, and that they are near impossible to blow when installed and treated properly throughout their life. If you have to remove one they are generally less messy than a composite gasket as well which is a big bonus if you tear into your engine a lot.
The disadvantage is that the mating surfaces need to be perfect or the gasket WILL NOT seal properly. This is a huge disadvantage as it means you pretty much have to get the head and block surfaces milled before install just to be sure they are flat. And that's costly, as well as the fact that it can only be milled so far before you end up with a worthless block or head because the deck height is all screwed up.
I generally use composite gaskets. Metal gaskets are generally only useful if you're going to run crazy amounts of boost, I've run 16 PSI through an engine with a composite gasket and there was no problem when using proper head studs.

I love the engine in them, it's the same in my pathfinder, minus the dual intake. If I could ever get my
hands on an 84" 300zx I would try to drop that engine in there.
Last night on the motorway all the faults on my car un-faulted and I was able to put my foot down at 70mph and feel it pull to 80mph... For the past 6 months it's been a sluggish pile of shite.
Cruising at 70 and suddenly the power will fall off and I won't be able to break 50. Dangerous. Power will come back in surges randomly.
Possible culprits are:
Clutch sensor (P0903 error)
Coolant temperature sensor (Pretty much useless)
MAF sensor (Which apparently is the first thing to check)
Brake switch (I've just asked my friend who was following me last night if my brake lights were flickering)
Sensor that tests the cooling fan's resistor network (Common fault)
Citroen seem to reckon it's a sticky vacuum pump causing the "waste gate" on the turbo not to close. (I've got some instructions on how to test this which just involves driving the thing, I'm going out in a bit so I'll test it)
So now I need to find out what is causing this crap, I love this car but god Citroen electrics are a dog, but I knew that.
I'd rather have electrical faults than mechanical ones because electrics are something I have experience in and the confidence to work on. I suck at mechanical things but this leads to me failing in diagnosis.
So I don't know if anyone remembers me but I came in here a while ago asking for advice on buying an Audi A4. Since then I still haven't bought a car yet and I'm looking to widen my look on cars. I don't have much experience with cars so I've come here to ask if anyone can recommend me a car. My budget is about 8K. Can go slightly over it if it's worth it.
I don't like small cars. I don't know why hence why I've been looking at A4's. I like the more business yet sportive looking cars. If anyone can recommend me something i'd would be appreciated!

I've been thinking of buying a black 2001-2002 A4 with a nice 2.0-2.4L V6 engine like this,

And give it a bit of a meaner look with a black grill like I saw someone else have in this thread.
Only problem being, I don't know anything about cars whatsoever.
so I've been researching suspension for my civic, and I think I might go with coilovers just because of being able to adjust it (roads in Pennsylvania suck) and I also came upon a very good deal, $325 for Function & Form type 1 coilovers, from what I've read they are good coilovers for the money, although they are used

Jesus christ, those are expensive. Take a quick drive out here to socal and you can pick one of those up in great condition for around 3k.

The big ticket price does not correlate to condition Glitch. It's unjustified. Like Aetna said, they're so cheap here in California rightfully so; you can get one for 1-2000.

Does Colorado salt their roads?
I can't exactly drive over to cali just to take a look at a car, seeing as how its at least a 10-12 hour drive. I like the 300zxs, but not that much
Well, looks like I've got a situation: I'm very lucky and my dad is trying to give me a car, but he wants to have it out of his possession by the end of the month. I've only got my permit, so that gives me a few weeks to get my license. Not sure if this is even possible but I'm going to do my damnedest.
Car is a 2002 Mazda Protege5 - 170k miles, automatic, completely and recently serviced/painted, non-stock 17'' alloys, and custom exhaust that I have yet to identify. If everything works out and the car ends up in my possession, I'd love to clean it up even more and share pics.
tl;dr can i get a license by the end of the month if i have a permit and not a whole lot of experience driving in traffic

I ordered a MUSTANG 5.0L 130 AMP alternator made by PA Performance, it looks like the wiring is going
to be a nightmare.

Expect to spend insane amounts of money on maintenance, you have to pull the engine to basically do anything.
I washed the Jetta today and then did some parallel parking (which I'm getting better at) and a 3-point-turn (which is ridiculously easy).
Parallel parking is much easier when you don't get the length of the car to do it in

I love how your pasionet about finding a suitable "sporty" vehicle.
I would just broaden your search on vehicles. Most audi owners here (Me and Venom) could tell you that there ; 1 A pain in the ass to fix. 2 Expensive as hell to fix. But mainly its about how the vehicle was taken care of, and how many miles is on the car.
Only really wisdom I can tell you is go read alot over at audizine.com.
audizine.com or audizone.com
And don't forget to post here with questions!

Yeah I've spend hours and hours just going trough various car models, But I think I've come to the decision that I'm just going to go for the 2001-2005 A4 model. It just has a lovely neutral look to it, Classy yet a bit sportive. When given a new front/rear bumper and a (read tiny) lowering of the car if will look amazing. Although by new bumpers I don't mean a over the top ugly body kit. More something like this

And another question, Would it be okay to buy one with about 150k km's on it? That's about 90k miles.
By the way thanks for being so helpful, I really appreciate it!

Well, this is just beginner stuff, and I don't want to spend a lot of money the first time.
I'll look though, and if they're cheap, i'll pick some up.

But I was just thinking that all those crazy bits usually cost $$$$

Only thing I can think of with that mileage that is important is timing belt... ( I know nothing about the euro engines maitence)
